How to Travel Around the West Lake
The West Lake is a brilliant pearl embedded in the fertile shores of the East China Sea. As the most renowned attraction in Hangzhou, the West Lake draws tourists from all corners of China and the world. But how to travel around West Lake may be your first concern. By following this itinerary, you’ll catch the best attractions, as well as other worthwhile discoveries that visitors miss. Get well-prepared for this journey. It is necessary for you to prepare a public transportation card which is available at any subway station. Because you can use it both to take a bus and a subway. But if you don’t have the card, remember to bring change to take a bus. Generally speaking, it will cost generally two to five yuan at one time. Be sure that you have enough money for tickets, lunch and emergencies. The first stop I recommend is Leifeng Pagoda, which is known throughout China as the location of the folk tale “The Legend of the White Snake”. Take buses No. Y1、Y2、Y3、K4 or J5 and get off at Jingci Temple. You will easily notice Leifeng Pagoda is in front of you. For 40 yuan, you can pass in. Inside the pagoda is a recently excavated mausoleum, with treasures including Buddhist silk scriptures, hand-carved, wooden dioramas of an epic West Lake myth, and, of course, sweeping views of the lake. Besides, you could climb to the top or take an elevator for a broader vision. After lingering around the Leifeng grounds, head east on Nanshan Road to Su Causeway. Go down Nanshan road and Su Causeway is on your right. Walking on Su Causeway, you can look at the lake and surrounding hills, absorbing all the visual and aural pleasures created by the breathtaking panorama. As a photography enthusiast, you can snap away happily, for there are plenty of opportunities on every nooks, corners and angle. The third stop is the Broken Bridge. Go west down Beishan road to the nearest bus stop called Yue Temple. Take buses No.Y2 or holiday line No.4 and get off at the Broken Bridge. It takes about 20 minutes and you could take a short rest. When you get off, the most famous bridge in Hangzhou comes into view. Step forward, you may bump shoulders with the visiting crowds, but the walk toward the largest island in the lake is pretty and relaxing. Here you'll find several museums, parks, nature trails and a Costa Coffee, housed in a Qing-era-style villa. You can enjoy the sun and the silence of the afternoon in that cafe. After the whole day’s journey, it is time to be back. Walk east on Beishan Road about 520 meters, then across Longyou Road and Wulin Road. Go straight to Fengqi Road to the subway station. It covers altogether 1.3 kilometers and if you are too tired to walk, you can take a taxi. It costs about 12 yuan to get there. After that, take subway No.1 line and get off at East Railway Station. To sum up, firstly, make an advanced preparation including enough money, a public transportation card or adequate change. Then, choose the exact bus and arrive at your destination. After visiting Leifeng Pagoda, keep strolling to enjoy the enchanting scenery unfolds before your eyes in Su Causeway. Before going to the Broken Bridge, be sure that you get on the right bus. When finishing up, don’t forget the right route to return. Wish you a great journey!
