  26. 4.0 Luray Valley Museum & Shenandoah Heritage Village (234 reviews)
    - Hidden Gem
    Thursday: 10:00 AM - 7:30 PM Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums
Luray Valley Museum & Shenandoah Heritage Village image
The museum is fantastic. You could easily spend a whole day here were you to carefully look at each exhibit and artifact and read the descriptions. It’s extremely well done and informative. The exhibits enlighten you about Virginia history and culture, including Native Americans who first lived in the area and their contributions to the growth and development of the area. And, the docents are very knowledgeable. However, It’s not really well suited for young kids because it’s not spacious and it’s densely packed with artifacts. So, the appropriate age group would be “old enough to understand (and care about) what’s going on.” See more..

    U.S. Army Transportation Museum image
Our museum heritage spans the breadth of transportation multi-modal delivery which has given the Nation and our Army the ability to globally deploy, engage and defeat the enemies of the United States in close combat. To do so, the Transportation Corps has grown and evolved in capability since its Rail and Movement Control beginnings. During Vietnam, Army Transportation added helicopter deliveries of man and equipment on the battlefield in support of intratheater operations. Today, Army transportation includes Air, Rail, Container, ship, and truck transport having divested its rotary capability to the Army Aviation Corps to give intertheater clout. With units spread throughout the Active, Guard and Reserve, Army transportation both here and abroad has created a culture within the logistics community who are risk takers on the battlefield as its people depart ports and Forward Operating Bases to sustain and bring capability which embraces its motto as the "Spearhead of Logistics" See more..

The First Lady's birthplace museum at her childhood home speaks to the life of one of the most influential, controversial, and politically significant women of the 20th Century. Edith Bolling [Galt] Wilson was not only the First Lady of President Woodrow Wilson, but was also a descendant of Pocahontas, and related to Martha Washington, Thomas Jefferson, J.E.B. Stuart, and Robert E. Lee. The Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum houses artifacts, furniture, books, letters, photographs, and documents owned by Mrs. Wilson or donated by family members and friends. The second floor Bolling home is located above the Museum. While many historians have referred to Mrs. Wilson as "The Secret President" because of her role in our country's history during President Wilson's debilitating stroke in 1919, there is much more to this story. 45. 4.5 Tangier History Museum (89 reviews)
    - Great Insight into Tangier
Spent < 1 hour Speciality Museums
    Tangier History Museum image
This is a great little museum that gives alot of context on the history and culture of Tangier. We did this as one of the last stops on the island so it was really cool to see people in pictures and the video that we'd already met and spoke with. There was surprisingly alot of information and memorabilia. We've been to towns many times Tangier's size that don't have a museum of their history nearly as impressive as this one. If you like to get the national parks stamps, they have a stamp here for the Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail. The crab chairs out in front are also a great photo op. We also really liked seeing the map with the pins of where other visitors were from (all over the world!). Take the time to watch the movie on the back wall. It gives alot of context to what you've seen or will be seeing on the island. We loved our time on Tangier and would recommend an overnight stay to anyone thinking of visiting! See more..

The Keystone Truck and Tractor Museum was an unexpected surprise. First it is enormous, with an entire area of immaculately restored tractors in rows by manufactures. They even had lawn mowers, snow blowers and toy trucks on display as well. There were three other warehouses that had everything from tractor trailers, fire trucks, wreckers and a soft drink truck. Again all immaculately restored with very good descriptions on them. This is a private collection and the owner was even at the museum speaking with people touring the museum. The gift shop was nicely stocked with toys signs and clothing. The clerk was very knowledgeable and friendly, Admission was a very affordable 10 dollars and parking is free plentiful and easy to access. I would highly recommend this as a stop. We go to many museums and were totally amazed by this one. See more..

The Fauquier History Museum at the Old Jail image
Built in 1808, the front portion of the jail originally contained four cells, each of which was approved to house 40 prisoners. In 1823, after only 15 years of use, the 1808 jail was deemed insufficient and a new stone jail was built just to the rear of the older structure. The 1808 jail was then converted into a house for the jailor with a kitchen made of the leftover stones from the "New Jail" added in 1823. The rear structure contains original cells as well as an exercise yard, which was also used as a hanging yard. Hangings took place in the yard until 1896. This is one of the most perfectly preserved old jails in the Commonwealth, and was operated as a jail until 1966. Today, the Old Jail is a history museum focusing on the histories of the Town of Warrenton, Fauquier County, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The artifacts that make up the museum's exhibitions have all been donated by generous local citizens. See more..

This museum is so cool. I took my little boy on July 29th, 2021. We were impressed that it was free. It only that we were giving an epic tour by Jacob who works there. Jacob was so knowledgeable and patient with my little boy who had so many questions. If you’re into airplanes or helicopters I recommend that you see Jacob at this location. See more..
