As you may have noticed, the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania area is steeped in history and there is no lack of battlefields to walk through. If you are a history buff and even if you are not, this is truly a once in a lifetime experience and I highly recommend you take the time to visit our battlefields. The Fredericksburg Battlefield in particular is unique because of its location and the "steps" that house many of the graves. On Memorial Day, boy scouts in our area put together luminarias for each grave site and they are lit at dusk. mThis will take your breath away.See more..

There are exhibits, maps, brochures and just about anything you could possibly need for visiting Lexington and the surrounding area. We were wrapping up our 12 day, 3,500 mile road trip through the SE, when we stopped at this Rest Area on NB I-77, just inside Virginia from N. Carolina. Folks, this was the cleanest Rest Area we'd stopped at since leaving Iowa. As luck would have it, we even spotted a man wearing an official vest, figured he was a caretaker, and we were right! This is a wonderful stop for anyone traveling this stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is a nice exhibit in the visitor center about the river and how it's vital to this area. You must also walk the short trail down to the river, across a foot bridge below the road bridge, and down to the opposite side of the river where you can see part of the old canal and the lock used to control the flow of water. There are exhibit signs along the way that explain how everything worked and the impact it had on this area. It does not take very long and is well worth your time.See more..
Stopped in here for a quick brake. I couldn't help to notice a sign out front saying come in a pick a while. That got my curiosity, so I went in to discover that they had a little music booth set up, complete with mic and guitar. Couldn't resist that, ended up goofing around here for a bit. Had a great chat with the staff and they gave me a couple of little keepsakes. The staff have a great passion for their area and of course the restrooms were clean too. 4.5Nelson County Visitor Center(3 reviews) - A lovely stop on a long trip Spent < 1 hour Visitor Centers This charming visitor center is halfway between my MD house and my mom's NC house so I've been stopping here for years. The stones in the yard are interesting and there's a big one dedicated to a local geologist. There used to be a pea gravel path between each stone but now it's grassy. It's quite a nice place to walk to stretch my legs and clear my head after a long drive. There's also a master gardeners' garden at the top of the hill so I always check that out. I eat my lunch at one of their comfortable picnic tables, then use the restroom, brush my teeth, say hello to the person at the front desk, and head on my way. Whenever I have a question, they always have an answer, and they frequently have peaches or apples donated by a local orchard. I look forward to this relaxing break on my long trip.See more..
