We did the sunset group paddle and it was fantastic. There's nothing like seeing this area from the water. The horses moved into the woods before we got across the channel but we learned all about them and the other flora and fauna as well as the history of the area. We rented kayaks here for paddling down the James River. We were pleased that this company makes it easy to choose an adventure and rent the equipment. They even lend you the dry cases and dry bags for cell phone, keys, etc. for no additional cost. You make reservations online ahead of time. When you arrive you check in at the building across the street (and can use the restroom or changing rooms). Then you get a lifejacket and have a quick video and oral lesson with a few pointers. Then they bus you up to the point on the river where you get your kayaks. This is where it was a little confusing. You may not remember which type of kayak you had registered for and they are all there together with no person to distribute. For me it was my first time ever kayaking so I didn't know what to do. And no one gave instruction. By watching others I figured out you grab paddles (but I didn't know which ones) and you grab a kayak (and I didn't know which one) and you shove off into the river. That would be well and good if one has ever kayaked before. And I should mention there were class 1 and class 2 rapids on this 9-mile trip down the river. As I was a newbie and had zero instruction, I got turned around backwards right at the top of first rapid. And maybe because of my nerves I got turned around sideways or backward at every rapid. So scary. There should have been kayaking instruction given before ever letting newbies go down the river with no guide. (tears and panic attacks were experienced) The river level was low from summer draught so the current wasn't very swift. We had to literally paddle for 4 hours to get down river to starting point. We are strong and in-shape and it was a lot of tiring work. (Just making it real so you know what to expect.)See more..

What a wonderful time we had! Staff super nice and got us on the river quickly. We did tubing, it should take hour and half and if we wanted to we could have gone again if we got back by 3. I recommend water shoes of some type, my kids lived without, they sell some there. Also a snack stand there. Wear sunblock, river is wide with little shade. The views are pretty and we had a hawk flying near us most of the time. Such a great day!See more..

We camped in our RV for 5 days and loved it, tried getting reservations for Oct. but they were already taken so maybe next year. We plan to stay at least a week a month. Friends and I rented a pontoon during Memorial Day weekend. Because the boat we reserved was "in the shop," we received an inferior boat for the price of the reserved boat. Our pontoon was nice, however. At the end of the day, to save cost on refueling, the owner suggested we take his gas containers to a local gas station instead of paying him to buy the more expensive gas at the nearby marina. Because we used 1/3 - 1/2 tank, he gave us 2 5-gallon containers and suggested we buy 7 gallons (suggesting a 21 or so gallon tank.) Little did we know that it was impossible to fill the gas tank on the pontoon with gas from the containers due to the position of the gas tank. So, we allowed him to buy the gas from the marina. We were charged $81.86 for 17 gallons of gas, approximately $1 more per gallon than the actual price of the gas at the marina. Plus we were never reimbursed for the 7 gallons we purchased at the local gas station. Although our boat was clean and in good running order, I feel we were taken advantage of by the price of the gasoline. Even though we were scammed out of $17, plus the cost of the gas we bought, he's lost our business, and I would never recommend this company to anyone. If you're staying at Westlake Waterfront Inn, renting from Wendell is very convenient; and his boats are nice. However, if you do rent from him, YOU refuel the boat yourself. I have to add, Wendell has received great reviews on other sites. But I feel like he treated us badly.See more..

I met the owners Tim and his wife while inquiring about a boat rental on Saturday, August 12, 2017. A park ranger at the nearby Booker T. Washington National Memorial highly recommend Magnum Boating Marina. We asked to rent a boat for a few hours, exclaiming that we had looked around only to find what we thought were high prices ($225 and up) with no willingness - in one case hostility - to give us any consideration. Tim's wife (forgot her name) made us a generous offer. The dock hands got the boat ready. Everything was in order. Tim greeted us on our return, asking if we had any problems. We engaged in friendly banter. Another group of boaters, stopping by to fuel up, chimed in. These welcome touches said these owners sincerely cared about their customers. Definitely top of the line. I and my cousins could not have been more pleased.See more..
