4.5Hungry Mother State Park(337 reviews) - Outstanding Adventure Thursday: 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM State Parks
We came here after seeing the state park was offering a guided canoe tour by a ranger. We had never been to the park so really didn’t know what to expect, and what else got exceeded all expectations . The tour was led by a ranger naturalist. She got us set up in our kayaks and off we went. She guided us around the lake, pointing out different plants and birds, and explained the overall process of the changing color of the leaves - which were in their fall glory. This trip was amazing and it was like 10$ per. no kidding. This park also contains miles of trails, beautiful meeting places, swimming spots, a nature museum and much much more. Highly recommend - one of VAs most spectacular parks - well worth a visit!See more..
4.5Smith Mountain Lake(331 reviews) - Crystal Clear Water State Parks • Bodies of Water
This lake is so clean and clear. We went paddleboarding and swam. It is a huge lake so you need to plan where you want to go and what activities you want to do- beach, jet ski, boat, paddleboard, kayak, swim, etc. It is a very peaceful area making it easy to relax. Air BnB has some amazing places on the lake to stay that are worth the money.See more..
The visitor center and country store were closed. The roads were clear but it had definitely snowed and temperatures were threatening to remain below freezing. Was this really necessary? Yes, and it was amazing. The frozen waterfall was awesome to behold - just a tad slow to get there. The Pinnacles offered views that are the best around - it was stunning. We just scratched the surface of this gorgeous park but what we saw was amazing leaving us with lifelong memories. Highly highly highly recommend!See more..

Beautiful area. Be sure to take the hiking trail from the road near sky lift down to the north portal of the tunnel. Free chair lift pass included with cabin stay since the swimming pool was not open. We stayed in a cabin. It was very nice. Nice wrap around deck with rocking chairs to look out at nature. Kitchen was well stocked with fridge, microwave, toaster, and stove. Bathroom had a hair dryer in it. Shower, no tub. Mattresses are covered in a heavy vinyl cover for sanitation purposes. I'd bring a mattress protector or extra blanket to put under your sheets so it doesn't feel like you are sleeping on vinyl. Mattress was fairly comfortable. Fireplace is a gas one with fake logs. No need to buy firewood for it. There is a fire pit outside to grill if you want to. The kitchen had grilling tools in one of the drawers. Kitchen had a nice assortment of pots and pans, baking dishes, dishes, utensils. It had paper towels and dish soap supplied. Bathroom had hand soap in dispenser at sink and body wash in dispenser in shower. The camp host by the camp store was very helpful when the store was closed. That is where you buy ice and firewood. Cell service was spotty all through the park. It was better in the cabin than down by the tunnel, but not a strong signal.See more..

4.5Claytor Lake State Park(166 reviews) - Great overnight stay Thursday: 6:00 AM - 10:00 PM State Parks • Bodies of Water
Beautiful park, well maintained & clean. Friendly camp host, clean shower house, plenty of hot water. Nice swim beach with pretty view and clear water. Easy to access from the interstate. The only downside of the campground is the spacing of the sites in the D loop. Very close together, with zero privacy between sites.See more..
4.5Fairy Stone State Park(156 reviews) - Hidden Gem! Thursday: 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM State Parks
We visited Fairy Stone State Park for a day-hike with our dog. Visiting in early May, we found a lot of wildflowers along the trail, including a couple showy orchis. Little Mountain Falls Trail is a 3-4 mile loop passing a small waterfall. We also hiked at Stuart's Knob that had several old iron mines and a couple nice overlooks. We stopped at the visitor center to buy a couple fairy stones in case we had no luck finding them. Before leaving, we stopped at Fairy Stone Pit Stop, right on the park boundary, and roamed around looking for stones. Once you know what to look for, we found about a dozen in a half-hour. No digging tools are allowed. Overall, a fun little park and would like camp here some time.See more..

This state park is just off the main road and a convenient long lunch stop. So pack a picnic and enjoy a lunch in the picnic area (off to the right just as you turn into the park). There is a loop trail near the picnic tables (many are shaded) as well as an interactive area for kids. This dog-friendly park works for all members of the family. There is a historic home, gift shop, chickens, and another restroom at the top of the hill. From the park map, there are an abundance of hiking options.See more..
Thanks to previous reviews, we stayed in cabin #14 on a Monday and Tuesday night and virtually had the campground to ourselves. Spacious two bedroom one bath with plenty of living and dining space. Best part was the wrap around porch. Watched the sunset and ate lunch at the picnic table. Best views of the valley from cabins 12-15. Hiked several trails, all very well maintained. The River Trail doesn't have a view of the river for much of the hike. Don't miss the Tye overlook. Floated in tubes for a joyful 2.25 hour lazy ride. Had the James all to ourselves. First time we've been to a campground without tents and we might never use them again. It was awfully nice not to pack up wet gear! Definitely go to the visitor center especially if you have children. Ranger identified the red newt we saw. Go to all three stores and get your brochure stamped for 20% off one item in any of the stores. See more..

4.5Powhatan State Park(45 reviews) - FALL RV Camping Thursday: 8:00 AM - 7:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours State Parks • Hiking Trails • Forests
Powhatan State Park has become one of our favorite State Parks for RV Camping. The sites are large and very well separated from each other so there is a lot of privacy. Many sites are heavily wooded, so there is lots of shade. The bath house is very clean and there is also a laundry area. Walking trails are well marked. The RV sites are not on the water, but the river is within walking distance. There are grocery and drug stores, gas stations and restaurants in two small towns close by.See more..
4.5Wilderness Road State Park(45 reviews) - Do not miss this hidden gem! State Parks • Hiking Trails • Playgrounds
What an incredible find! This place is truly a hidden gem that you will not want to miss! The reconstructed wilderness fort of Martin's Station in the park was fascinating, probably the most meticulously authentic and detailed fort I have ever seen. There was so much to see and absorb, and you really felt like you had stepped back in time--there was even a fully furnished tavern. I learned so much from the costumed interpreters working on site, one of whom was a former history teacher who told us fascinating stories about the individuals and what it took to survive in that place and time. I learned so many things that were unexpected and just really cool!See more..

4.5Machicomoco State Park(3 reviews) - Machicomoco State Park State Parks • Bodies of Water • Hiking Trails
Beautiful site with a great outdoor interpretive area. The displays and timeline walkway have plenty of information for a history lesson. The trails are well maintained, and there’s plenty of beautiful natural scenery to take in. I recommend walking down to the river’s edge and sitting on the dock, just to imagine what it might have been like for the native tribes living in such a peaceful place for so many centuries.See more..
