4.5Green Valley Book Fair(114 reviews) - What A Gem Thursday: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality & Gift Shops
We got this suggestion from the Harrisonburg Visitors Center and are glad we took the time to explore. It is only about 10 miles south of Harrisonburg and though it was crowded on a Saturday in December, but was plenty of parking and a vast selection of books at prices that were hard to believe. There are 2 levels and they cover just about every category known to man. I found National Geographics book on the Founding Fathers, that I had resisted at the regular price of $40,on the shelf here for $8. Another bargain was the great Dean Smith's The Carolina Way for $1.99 !!!! Needless to say we picked up a few Christmas presents and enjoyed the offerrings as well as the chocolate, bark, cookies and apple cider they generously had out for visitors. There also seen to be a lot of educational products, possibly for classroom instruction as bargain prices. Worth a stop and nice ride off I- 81.See more..
4.5Good Earth Peanut Company(112 reviews) - The best peanuts ever! Thursday: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Speciality & Gift Shops
Without a doubt, Good Earth peanuts are the best of any other companies. We came upon their charming store driving back from Florida on I-95 this past winter. We have now ordered two more times online and got our two grown sons hooked as well. The Virginia extra large peanuts are amazing and their peanut butters, both smooth and crunchy are phenomenal, the only ingredient.... peanuts. The jars don’t get oily or coagulate as other brands do and the taste is sublime.See more..

4.0Cobbler Mountain Cellars(78 reviews) - Not like other hard ciders. Thursday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality & Gift Shops
OMG. I was not a fan of hard ciders until having Cobbler Mountain ciders. We had a large group of 20 for a tasting. They are generous in their tastings and gave us a sample of EVERY cider!! Their cider is not carbonated. A plus in my book. It did. Not taste vinegar-y or hoppy. It was fruity, spicy, complex, delicious. It was hard to choose a favorite to have as a drink to sip while enjoying the grounds. I chose Blackberry. It smelled like a bag of fresh Haribo gummi bears! And tasted equally sweet and yummy. The tasting room is small, but easily accommodated our group as well as more. The grounds were beautiful, tucked in the woods. I do suggest they have a few more picnic tables and seating. We went on an unseasonably warm and sunny day in May and desperate sought shade. Please try this cider. Even if you don’t like cider. Cobbler Mountain will change your mind about cider.See more..

4.0Wine Loves Chocolate(42 reviews) - Quiet Taste Tour Thursday: 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Speciality & Gift Shops
This is one of three separate wine tasting locations owned by the Little Washington Winery, and this one actually doesn't focus on locally-grown wines. Instead, this downtown location pairs a variety of wines with truffles in a unique tasting experience. When we were there, we were the only customers and we appreciated the care for everyone's safety exhibited by the staff who assisted us. The experience included a flight of four wines paired with four truffles. Our "tour guide" walked us through each one, and the pairings really did add to the experience of the wine and the chocolate. All four wines - two whites and two reds - were delicious and the truffles were special as well. We left with two bottles of wine and five truffles and the wish we could come back often.See more..

4.0Valley Pike Farm Market(32 reviews) - Worth the Stop if Passing Through the Area! Spent < 1 hour Speciality & Gift Shops
My wife and I found this place by accident on our drive back from North Carolina. What a great find it was! A beautiful modern market that sold beer, wine, coffee, sandwiches, salsas, honey, etc. Lots of local products and not your chain variety. My wife and I had a couple of healthy turkey sandwiches on whole wheat bread. The bread was fresh and the turkey was sliced in front of us. A very nice selection of deli sandwiches that they created or you can build your own. We bought tortilla chips and they were addictive. The cold drink and the salt from the chips was fantastic. Prices were very reasonable and the staff was welcoming. Plenty of parking in their huge parking lot. There were food trucks in their parking lot if sandwiches are not what you want. Don't go to Subway, which is at every exit. This place is worth the stop if you're driving through.See more..

4.5Holy Cross Abbey(25 reviews) - A Chance to Reflect -- and be queit! Speciality & Gift Shops
I stayed three nights over a weekend. The reviews you read are just visitors and tourists (to be fair, yes, I was a tourist, but in a different way). In my opinion, they write more than they will ever see. "Beautiful place to pop in for a visit". "A cute little visit". "Not a fruit cake person and their choc. chip cookies aren't much." Oh, and they complain about the cats. Seems these reviewers complain about everything. Looking for a five-star hotel, I'm sure. But this is not it -- and it's not even the reason to visit. It's modest, quiet and the food is great. You have a lot of space in which to reflect quietly. I attended every service (there was no one at the 3:30 a.m. service -- wonder why? Dreaming about washing your BMW?). All asleep, I bet. It rained Saturday morning as I woke up, and I just listened to the sound of it. Loved every minute of it.See more..

4.5Darden's Country Store(20 reviews) - Don't forget to get some ham sandwiches Thursday: 7:00 AM - 6:00 PM Speciality & Gift Shops
Stopped in just to look around. Were told the country ham on roll sandwiches (only $1) are good. We bought two and ate them in the parking lot. They lied to us. They weren't good. They were AMAZING! We are both chefs living in Louisville KY and we know good country ham. Sorry Louisville but Dardens country ham was the best we've ever tasted. Sliced thin, the way a country ham should be and salty. Yum, yum and yum! We ended up buying 1/2 lb of thinly sliced country ham and some hoop cheese. Stopped by a grocery for some crackers and fruit and we had an amazing, relaxing dinner at our hotel. Loved this ham so much, we're going to order some for Christmas dinner and have it shipped to Louisville. See more..
