We did the sunset group paddle and it was fantastic. There's nothing like seeing this area from the water. The horses moved into the woods before we got across the channel but we learned all about them and the other flora and fauna as well as the history of the area. Our guides were knowledgeable and extremely friendly, helpful, and patient. The whole team was very welcoming. We highly recommend Assateague Adventures.See more..
We had a great time, the guide is very knowledgeable of the surroundings, the history and the natural habitats , he made it very pleasant along the ride. We also stop at the winery for some wine tasting. Overall experience was remarkable. Really worth itSee more..
My boyfriend and I went repelling and rock climbing with Lester in October. Lester was very personable and made us feel safe and confident in his abilities from the start. Little things like the “commitments to safety” he had us repeat in the beginning to his in-depth tutorials about knot-tying made us feel really comfortable stepping off the ledge once it came time to repel. The day was tailored to us and Lester was up for staying longer if we wanted to climb more. I would 100% recommend this experience to anyone visiting the Shenandoah area, and have already sent our weekend itinerary to some friends, telling them how great it was.See more..
5.0Twin River Outfitters(162 reviews) - Kayaking down the river might be more work than you expect Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Boat Tours • Water Sports • Boat Rentals • Self-Guided Tours & Rentals • Kayaking & Canoeing
We rented kayaks here for paddling down the James River. We were pleased that this company makes it easy to choose an adventure and rent the equipment. They even lend you the dry cases and dry bags for cell phone, keys, etc. for no additional cost. You make reservations online ahead of time. When you arrive you check in at the building across the street (and can use the restroom or changing rooms). Then you get a lifejacket and have a quick video and oral lesson with a few pointers. Then they bus you up to the point on the river where you get your kayaks. This is where it was a little confusing. You may not remember which type of kayak you had registered for and they are all there together with no person to distribute. For me it was my first time ever kayaking so I didn't know what to do. And no one gave instruction. By watching others I figured out you grab paddles (but I didn't know which ones) and you grab a kayak (and I didn't know which one) and you shove off into the river. That would be well and good if one has ever kayaked before. And I should mention there were class 1 and class 2 rapids on this 9-mile trip down the river. As I was a newbie and had zero instruction, I got turned around backwards right at the top of first rapid. And maybe because of my nerves I got turned around sideways or backward at every rapid. So scary. There should have been kayaking instruction given before ever letting newbies go down the river with no guide. (tears and panic attacks were experienced) The river level was low from summer draught so the current wasn't very swift. We had to literally paddle for 4 hours to get down river to starting point. We are strong and in-shape and it was a lot of tiring work. (Just making it real so you know what to expect.)See more..
Had a great experience with Front Royal Outdoors. Their facilities had everything I needed and more (like a changing room and decent restrooms). There staff was personal and responsive - picked us right up when I called to say we were approaching the end of our river route, they even arrived early. And the buses were much cleaner and newer than another Shenandoah outfitters we’ve used before. Thanks for a great experience! We’ll be back. See more..
4.5The Downriver Canoe Company(64 reviews) - Just OUTSTANDING! Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Kayaking & Canoeing
Great experience! Made my reservations a few months out, turned out it was really unnecessary during the week. Stopped in the day before to check things out and after a wonderful conversation with the staff we changed our plans (state park hike, 3 mile canoe) and went with the longer 7.5 mile canoe trip. They said it would take about 2 1/2 hours and we finished right at 2 hours. What a great choice! My son (15) and I were the only ones on the river on a Tuesday morning! He’s never canoed and it’s been 35 years for me. River was “normal” and we traversed the “rapids” with ease. Staff was super helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly! I will be back in a few weeks with my daughter! Highly recommend!!!See more..
4.5James River Runners(50 reviews) - A little float through Virginia..... River Rafting & Tubing • Kayaking & Canoeing
Excellent way to spend a lazy afternoon floating down the James River for three hours. If you are a thrill seeker, this is NOT for you. But if you want to just float along and soak up the sun and the beautiful scenery while staying cool, by all means head down to James River Runners. If you don't mind spending money, there is literally nothing that you need to bring other than a bathing suit. They have everything you need for sale in the office. The staff is helpful--- and I mean EVERY SINGLE ONE of them. I asked a lot of questions because I am a bit of a city boy with limited outdoor experience. They patiently answered everything and soon enough I was out on the river having a relaxing time in the sun.See more..
5.0Wilderness Canoe(48 reviews) - Great trip with beautiful scenery! Thursday: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Kayaking & Canoeing
My family of 7 (6 adults and one 12 year old) went of the Alpine to WCC trip in 2 inflatable rafts and 2 inflatable kayaks. It was July so the the water level was low and slow so the rafts did get stuck some. The inflatable kayaks did awesome and I would highly recommend!! They were easy to paddle and alot of fun!! Overall, this is a very easy trip with a few low level rapids and alot of calm stretches in between which require quite a bit of paddling. AS I said, we went July 3 so it was low and slow but a beautiful trip where we could relax and see the Virginia scenery. The river was also very clean with very little seaweed and no snakes or anything that we saw ( a plus with a family of 5 daughters!!)See more..
Great place to float on the river, nice driver on the way back let us sign the bus. Really relaxing felt like we had the river to ourselves even on a holiday weekend. Go Early and bring snacks. See more..

5.0Burnham Guides Paddling Adventures(27 reviews) - Paddling and camping in serene settings. Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Gear Rentals • Stand Up Paddleboarding • Kayaking & Canoeing
I took a back country kayaking trip(4 days, 3 nights) Feb 2023. The Burnhams know the local history, wildlife and are great camp cooks making the trip superb. The backcountry trip provided a serene setting to view sharks, rays, deer and enjoy the peace of nature. The rented camping equipment was great quality providing comfort at night. This trip was geared for experienced paddlers. I will definitely sign up for another Burnham expedition!See more..
Bill & Mary Burnham provide a wonderful experience in kayaking and history as you paddle the tributaries and small beaches of Onancock Creek, VA. Experienced & inexperienced, young & old can enjoy this adventure together. The Burnhams provide it all at their rental shop at the Onancock Wharf. Restaurants are nearby, as are restrooms and ample parking. They also provide other types of kayaking experiences.....paddle to Chatham Vineyards, enjoy a wine tasting, buy some vintages and paddle back down a beautiful secluded creek to your vehicle! Tours through the seaside marshes of the Eastern Shore of Virginia are also highly recommended.See more..
Tangent Outfitters is one of my favorite fishing guide services. I regularly use guide services to take my family, customers, and employees on fishing trips. Many times, I only use a guide once due to their inappropriate language and conversation. Shawn and his team are professional...and they always put our new fishermen/fisherwomen on fish. If you are truly a fisherman, or you want your kids to have a great day on the river and not have to explain any inappropriate conversation later, I recommend Tangent Outfitters.See more..

This is a wonderful adventure that accommodates any age and appetite for something different. I have been many times.... Every time I return invigorated and blessed to live in such a beautiful area. If you have not seen the coast from this perspective you will be amazed at the hidden beauty, beautiful wildlife and the peaceful nature of getting away for a few minutes. As a company or team mini retreat.... It is just what we needed.... Get away... stop for a moment in a beautiful place and talk....clarity of thought without the normal distractions.... A great team building or family bonding moment....A lasting gift from this adventure. I Highly recommend this adventure.... Great for all ages!See more..
5.0New River Outdoor Co(21 reviews) - Bronzeback Heaven on the New River River Rafting & Tubing • Kayaking & Canoeing
We fished the last day of March 2018. The river was very high and murky. I was concerned we wouldn't catch any fish but New River Outdoor Company put us big fish. A special thanks to our guide Randy. He worked his butt off to put us on fish. We caught 12 total and none of them was under 17 inches. See more..
We visited here on a whim and were not disappointed! The park facilities were highly above average. Lots of room to picnic and grill. Great boat dock with rentals. Huge playground! We’re from out of state but would definitely return when we come back to the area. See more..

5.0Mudkat Outfitters LLC(4 reviews) - New outfitters, great experience! Gear Rentals • Kayaking & Canoeing
Someone camping next to us at the KOA told us to try this outfitters. We called and THEY CAME TO THE KOA AND PICKED US UP! No extra charge. We learned the company is only one year old so the kayaks were very nice and the bus was new too. The driver Jeff was a very nice guy and gave us excellent instructions on where he would meet us at the end of our trip. He let us keep our backpack with our towels in the bus. The river was a little low but we did a 2 hour trip which included us stopping and eating our packed lunch. (30.00 per kayak) When we got to the pick-up spot Jeff was waiting there! There are some well advertised outfitters in the area but we thought this was very personal and a great price! (They also offer the tubing, canoe, etc.)See more..

5.0New River's Edge(2 reviews) - Stunningly beautiful Fall kayak trip down the New River River Rafting & Tubing • Kayaking & Canoeing
Wonderful 2+ hour kayak trip from the boat landing in Eggleston back New River’s Edge. The fall colors and the cliffs along the way on the New are absolutely stunning. Had some exciting moments through the rapids followed by relaxing times in the calm, incredibly clear water. Paul is very friendly and share interesting factoids about the New River on our van ride to Eggleston. We’ve also gone tubing with Paul’s outfit in the summer and that is a blast too.See more..

James River Adventures offer exciting adventures at the spectacular Rivers Edge park right across the bridge. My 15 year old daughter and I paddle boarded while my 7 year old son road with us. Robert got us in the water right away and did a great job assisting us with the process. They are in a perfect location as the water was calm and the view of downtown Lynchburg was amazing. If you’re looking for an adventure close to home that all ages will enjoy, definitely contact James River adventures! We will certainly be back!See more..
