4.5Jamestown Glasshouse(687 reviews) - Working Glass House (studio) that you have to see! Points of Interest & Landmarks
Almost missed it as the building is rather hidden from the parking lot. And we didn’t even know it’s a working glass house. So was such an amazing surprise that it has an oven for melting glass and two glass blowers actually making what can only be called glass art. A VERY good instructor (?) was helpfully explaining the complete process and answering questions. We ended up buying multiple pieces at a very reasonable price. Go!See more..

We spent Saturday morning at the Riverwalk Landing. After visiting the monument and enjoying the fife and drummers we went to the landing where the Saturday market was being held and the fife and drummers as well as a small combo played. We watched the short reenactment and browsed inside where displays had been set up with veterans at each one to answer questions and discuss the exhibits. We took lots of pictures of the landing and enjoyed our morning very much. A plus is free parking and several restaurants nearby.See more..

4.5Fort Monroe National Monument(228 reviews) - Fascinating Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
So I had been wanting to visit Fort Monroe for a couple years and on a recent trip to the area, I made a point to stop there. The fort is surrounded by housing and a moat. There are at least two one way bridges across the moat and traffic lights at each to be sure that everyone is safe coming and going. There are still people living on the grounds of the fort so be sure to only park in the museum parking or the few other open parking areas. Outside the museum there is a handy walking guide that takes you to all the highlights I. And out of the fort. The huge tree and the Lincoln gun were really cool and walking along the wall allows for some lovely views out over the water. It was a great place to visit and I feel like I learned a lot. It’s surrounded by gardens and situated on a hillside in Arlington with great views looking down over the National Mall. It’s walking distance from Arlington National Cemetery and the Marine Corps Memorial. I believe the bells ring a song every hour and it’s very beautiful. The gardens are especially stunning in the spring with thousands of tulips. Definitely recommend if you’re already nearby!See more..
4.5The Exchange Hotel Civil War medical Museum(189 reviews) - Great family historical stop! Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • History Museums
Welcome to the Exchange Hotel Civil War Medical Museum. Before the Civil War, the Exchange Hotel with its high ceiling parlors and grand veranda welcomed passengers from the two rail lines: the Virginia Central Railroad and the Orange & Alexandria Railroad. Soon after the completion of the hotel, the Civil War began. Troops, supplies, and wounded were transported on these railroads to Gordonsville. The Exchange Hotel became the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital which provided care for 70,000 soldiers, both Confederate and Union. In the reconstruction period, this hospital served the newly freed slaves as a Freedman's Bureau Hospital. As the United States healed and the railroads boomed, this graceful building returned to its role of hotel. Now fully restored, the hotel is a museum dedicated to the Civil War era.See more..

4.5Handley Regional Library(152 reviews) - Gorgeous Beaux-Arts style building Thursday: 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Libraries
Incredible to see such a building among all the old colonial and Gothic revival style ones. We drove by, and our jaws dropped. Parked our car (most spaces are metered———- a quarter for 20 minutes), and after climbing some stairs, we were inside. You almost feel like you entered a sanctuary, there is something so special about the space. The library opened in 1913, and has been beautifully maintained. We walked through all the rooms, and admired the details, the art work, the massive fireplaces, the elegant spiral staircases, the dome stained glass ceiling, etc. We were so involved with the building, that we barely noticed the books. It’s nice that they have a small wall dedicated to the architects (from New York), who designed this jewel.See more..

4.5Smith's Fort Plantation(105 reviews) - Great history Thursday: Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • History Museums
Smith's Fort Plantation is nestled on the south side of the James River, located on the site of Captain John Smith's planned "New Fort", on the land given by Chief Powhatan as a dowry for his daughter Pocahontas upon her marriage to John Rolfe. The 18th century manor house retains much of its original woodwork and provides examples of early American and English period furnishings from the late 16th through the early 18th centuries. Built sometime between 1751 and 1765, this story-and-a-half Flemish bond brick house was home to Jacob Faulcon and his family. The name "Smith's Fort Plantation" comes from the fact that John Smith began construction of a second fort on this site in 1608. Smith's Fort offered a strategic location for a retreat fort away from the original settlement, but construction was abandoned early due to starving conditions at the first fort and conflicts with the local Native American tribe. A few years later after the successful union of Pocahontas and John Rolfe, the bride's father, Wahunsenacawh, was the paramount chief of Tsenacommacah (In 1607, the English colonists were introduced to Wahunsenacawh as Powhatan and understood this latter name to come from Powhatan's hometown near the falls of the James River near present-day Richmond, Virginia.), Gave his new son-in-law a grant of this land as a dowry gift. Although the couple never lived on site, their only son, Thomas Rolfe, later returned to Virginia and opened a tobacco plantation on over 400 acres of the property.See more..

We did the Eastern and Western Front Driving Tours before visiting Grant's HQ ending up here late afternoon. If I had known that this site was really the start of the siege and battle, I should have started the visit here. The video and the diorama really help to understand the logistics which led to a Union Army victory. A ranger was available to answer questions. A brief tour of restored rooms on the first floor is available. The restored Appomattox Plantation building and grounds are beautiful, overlooking the James River and worth a stroll. 4.5Buchanan Swinging Bridge(77 reviews) - Over the river Points of Interest & Landmarks • Bridges
We made a special detour to see the Buchanan Swinging Bridge. We arrived after dark on a frigid night in November. The bridge itself is not lit but there was enough light to read the signs and walk across safely. The entrance was on the overpass/car bridge and the swinging bridge seems at a very odd angle over the river. The sign said only 3 people but there were 4 of us. The bridge is pretty robust for a pedestrian bridge and had stone piles for stability & support.See more..

4.0Sherwood Forest Plantation Foundation(74 reviews) - Tour By Tim Thursday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
Sherwood Forest Plantation was the home of 10th U.S. President John Tyler from 1842 until his death in 1862. It is the only nineteenth century presidential home to have been continuously owned and occupied by members of the President’s family. The oldest parts of the house date to ca. 1660. Construction and renovations of the 18th and 19th centuries, completed by President Tyler and his wife Julia Gardiner Tyler in 1845, have made the house a classic example of Virginia Tidewater “Big House, Little House, Colonnade, Kitchen” architecture. At 301 feet in length it is the longest frame house of its age in the country. The house is furnished with family heirlooms, antique furniture, paintings, silver, porcelain and oriental rugs. A few of the pieces in the home were used by President and Mrs. Tyler in the White House and were brought to Sherwood Forest after the President’s term in office. Though many furnishings purchased for the house by President and Mrs. Tyler were destroyed during the Civil War some still remain. Others are from the South Carolina home of Mrs. Harrison Ruffin Tyler who, with her husband, restored the house in the late 1970s. There are nearly twenty oil portraits of family members past and present on display in rooms toured by the public. Sherwood Forest is considered one of the most complete plantation yards still in existence in America with outbuildings, or dependencies, dating to ca. 1660. They include a tobacco curing shed, a smoke house, a milk house and a privy among others. Julia Gardiner Tyler planned Sherwood Forest’s grounds according to the principles of New York landscape gardener and architect A. J. Downing. The 25 landscaped acres surrounding the house today include centuries-old trees, terraced lawn and gardens. Self-guided grounds tours: $10 per adult, children under 15 free House tours by appointment: $35 per adult, $25 per school-age childSee more..

4.5Woodstock Tower Observation Site(60 reviews) - Here is your chance to get a panoramic of Valley! Points of Interest & Landmarks • Observation Decks & Towers
This site was listed in several brochures for things to do in and around Woodstock, VA. Honestly, it didn't sound all that interesting on paper, but thankfully our B&B host recommended it for our itinerary. It was a fairly easy drive to get there, but as others have written---keep your wits when navigating the hairpin turns. Nothing too dramatic, but be aware of the road conditions. It's a short walk from the parking area to the tower. It's not a huge tower so climbing the metal structure is doable for most people. On higher traffic days you'll have to be patient as others go up, and come down. Enjoy the great 360 view. This is where you want to try out the panoramic feature on your phone camera. Our favorite overlook is still Storybook Trail not far away, but this one provided some excellent photo ops.See more..
