  1. 4.5 Newport News Park (291 reviews)
    - Great park

I love this park. It is beautiful and I hike there often. You can walk numerous trails and the bike trail which is 5 miles as well. I'd say you could walk a good 10 miles hike if you utilize all the trails in the park and campground, The one trail to avoid is Wyman's Creek loop. I came across 2 cotton mouth snakes directly on the trail and they would not move. They both opened their mouths to hiss at me and took an aggressive pose. Both were blocking the trail in 2 different spots so I could not pass. It was an awesome trail but I won't take it again. See more..
  2. 4.5 Mount Vernon Trail (251 reviews)
    - Great trail, perfect for a variety of distances, populated but not crowded
    Biking Trails
    Mount Vernon Trail image
As an avid runner, this is one of my most favourite trails in the US. I've traveled from NYC to San Francisco and run many rail trails in between, but the Mount Vernon Trail holds a special piece of my heart. It's beauty and ease of use can't be beat. It's a popular trail, so there are usually other runners on it, but not so many that it feels crowded; just enough to make this solo female runner feel safe. It has a varied terrain which is nice, but if you start up at Mount Vernon the trail is mostly downhill, which makes for a fun out and back run. Alternatively, you can start at Mount Vernon and run to King Street which would be great for a long run (it's about 9ish miles). Overall, it's a great trail and perfect for any type of runner or walker and the view along to Potomac is incredible. See more..
  3. 5.0 Shuttle Shack (183 reviews)
    - Loved our ride!

    Shuttle Shack image
Easy process, would go again with them for sure! I reserved the bikes via phone the day before and it was about $130 for our 4 bikes and shuttle. The shuttle ride was nice, the driver and other patrons were very friendly and chatted. We took about 2 hours to come down and it was beyond beautiful, cool and green as far as the eye can see. The ride was mostly downhill and there are a few cafes and bathrooms among the way. Returning the bikes was easy and they made a great recommendation for lunch at Demascus Diner. See more..
  4. 5.0 Bike Depot (157 reviews)
    - Bike Depot--Excellent Bike Rental
    Spent 2-3 hours Biking Trails
    Bike Depot image
Chincoteague is a fine spot for the casual biker. We rented from the Bike Depot (they have other rentals as well), left our car in the parking lot and crossed the bridge to the Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge. Trails were mostly well-marked, and we used the map provided by the Bike Depot. We began with the lighthouse (“The mosquito capital of the world”), which was lovely (here the trail wasn’t asphalt and we did walk our bikes up the last hill). Then, we took the main road and turned left on the Black Duck Trail. We rode to the pony corral and then backtracked to the Wildlife loop. Here we took a right turn to the beach—lovely, almost isolated and beautiful with a deer grazing just a few feet from us. We could see a long view of the lighthouse as we left Assateague and returned to the Bike Depot. The clerk there was very professional, and we spent very little time checking in and out. The bikes worked well, and I was happy to be able to rent a basket to stow my “stuff” for the ride. See more..

    Virginia Creeper Trail Club image
So for the uninitiated the Virginia Creeper goes DOWNHILL for 17 miles! Nothing strenuous unless you are one of the over achievers peddling uphill! Plenty of pretty landscapes, a preserved country store to check out while you rest your tush or visit the WC! When all that exertion makes you thirsty bring a picnic to the Abington Winery and relax on the lawn under the trees listening to the creek. Full disclosure a pup or two or more may scoop up your scraps! See more..

    - One of best bike trails of its length in the world. Super well maintained, great signage.

    Virginia Capital Trail image
Super smooth (except for a very short stretch that had some root impact) on a racing road bike, road in rain and still had good traction, just go straight and don't brake or accelerate through wood bridges. Amazing historic sites along the way. Photo at Indian Fields Tavern from the porch seating, best burger ever and super bike friendly (place fill water bottles, park bike and sit when your grungy in bike gear:). 60 miles roundtrip to the tavern from Richmond lock trailhead. Excellent Bike/Walking trails - Rails to Trails. Most of the trails are blacktopped for smooth biking/walking and are shaded from the hot sunny days. We biked over 9 miles in beautiful surroundings, including a low water crossing area that was concrete with water going under/through pipes with view of waterfall, an amazing tunnel that was a cool refreshing spot on a hot day, and multiple trails for you to choose from. 11. 4.5 Blue Ridge Tunnel East Trailhead (14 reviews)
    - A great day trip

Blue Ridge Tunnel East Trailhead image
My wife and I made the 1 hour drive to Afton to check out this tunnel. From the Eastside parking lot, next to the old train station, the hike is a half mile to the tunnel entrance. We'll maintained and a safe surface to walk on. The tunnel is about a mile long and definitely requires a headlamp or flashlight. Nice and cool in mid June but a t-shirt is fine. A few uneven areas and a few holes to watch out for on the path thru and the edges can be a little slick from the water dripping inside. Each side has running water like creeks which does have crawdads, salamanders and frogs in them if you slow down and look closely. We exited the Westside and returned to where we parked. Definitely worth the time to check out the hard work that went into the making of this 1850's effort See more..

Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail image
We love this trail. Since we went with our 8 year old we parked at the second entrance which saved us two miles each way. He was able to bike all the way to the end. It was about 11 miles round-trip. This is a great converted rail bed so it's really flat. The trail is great because there are lots of interesting things to see along the way. The trail runs along a stream and there is a covered bridge. See more..

Blue Ridge Tunnel West Trailhead image
We parked at the end with the parking lot. We followed the path to the tunnel and walked the entire tunnel. We sure to shine your flashlight on the inside walls of the tunnel and imagine the Irish immigrants and enslaved people who were tasked with making the tunnel Wow! At the end of the tunnel, someone crafted a seat out of tree branches. We sat here a few minutes and walked back. Lots of beautiful wildflowers along the path. Portable toilets are located near the parking lot. See more..

Delicious food, fire pit conversations, a guitar player and plenty of firewood to stoke the fire. We were BLOWN AWAY! The lodging is comfy, great beds too! To the staff: Thank you for hanging out with us by the fire and making us feel like family. If you ever want a unique get away... GO TO Wilderness Adventure! See more..

    Mountain Laurel Trails image
So, this place is awesome with 11 miles of trail that is maintained by the owner, Bill, meticulously. We came from Georgia for a USAC race and don't know of any trail system that is so inviting and enjoyable. The trails are root-y, dry, and have a lot of sharp rocks. However, it is totally covered in shade, which is LOVELY. The trails are also very technical with hard turns and climbs. Don't miss the opportunity to ride these trails! See more..
  21. 4.5 Greenbelt Walking And Bicycle Trail (2 reviews)
    - First Class Trail
    Biking Trails
We really were impressed by the Greenbelt Walking and Bicycle trail that circles downtown Big Stone Gap. This three-mile level, paved, and lighted trail provided us with a quiet and scenic walk along the Powell River and the South Fork of the Powell River. It was in first class condition. We passed parks and backyards, we saw Great Blue Herons fishing for food, we enjoyed being shaded by mature trees, and we enjoyed the solitude. Well done. We walk allot when we travel, and this was one of the nicest places we have walked. In fact, we did the entire 3.0 mile loop twice back-to-back. See more..
