We arrived here late on a Saturday evening, a few hours before dark. Parking was scarce but available if you looped through and were willing to walk a block or two. We scouted out a few places we wanted to try the following day and generally just took in the place to get a feel for it. When we returned on Sunday a little before noon, we headed for the Benny Vitalis Pizza to try a slice. Some places didn't open until later but we browsed some of the other stores along the way. 3. 4.0 Canal Walk (324 reviews)
    - If you like to walk and be outdoors, Canal Walk is perfect for you.
    Historic Walking Areas
    Canal Walk image
Perfect for folks who love to walk. My wife and I walked the entire day. She had never been to this part of Richmond before. By the end of the day, she was thrilled to have had the chance to walk everywhere, to experience everything that Canal Walk has to offer. Plenty of people out walking, taking their dog for a stroll, bike riding with family, going for a jog or run, folks taking pictures, having a picnic...Canal Walk is awesome. And on a day like we had, temperatures in the 70s, no humidity, a fresh breeze and deep blue skies, there was nothing better than to walk the Canal quite literally all day. Signage everywhere, so if you're into interpretive experiences, this is the place for you. Easy to find, it goes on forever. Put on your walking shoes and bring your camera so that you can capture all that Canal Walk has to offer. See more..

The folks here are so nice! We stopped to see the pencil, and a sale person told us about the giant ✂️ inside. He asked if we would like to see those, and of course we said yes! The history behind it all is interesting. He gave us free postcards, notepads, and gave the kids tape measures. Seriously, who does that! Kindness, kindness kindness...and the world could use more it. We will pass the kindness forward! See more..

    Roanoke Railwalk image
A good way to see and learn about railroad system and history of it through the walk (especially if you love history and train system). The walk is still a work in progress. At least you can see the old buildings and warehouses of the great railroad system running through Roanoke, plus standing close to the live trains go by. I walked from the Amtrak passenger platform to the area behind the Museum but preferred to be on the nice cover bridge to watch the trains from atop. See more..

    Chessie Nature Trail image
We entered the Chessie trail from Buena Vista and rode up to Lexington. The View was spectacular and the trail was well cats. We even enjoyed some encounters with cows and butterflies. We found a great place to go down to the water to swim as it follows the Maury River. In Lexington we found a fantastic restaurant to go to that is only a half mile up the road from the trail the name of the restaurant is Muchacho Alegre. The food was fabulous! The service was great! We had a dog with us, but could not bring the dog into the patio area. They were okay with my friend Jenny just tying her to the post and keeping the dog outside the patio area. I highly recommend this restaurant and the bike trail See more..

Petersburg National Battlefield - Five Forks Unit image
Five Forks is the junction of five roads and was of critical strategic importance to the Confederacy. Lee ordered it held "at all hazards". Artillery Colonel Willie Pegram fell amongst his battery cannon at the junction attempting to comply with Lee's command. The victorious Union cavalry at the battle included Sheridan and Custer. A small visitor center has an excellent film on the decisive battle. An interesting battlefield hidden among the woods of Dinwiddie County. Excellent ranger on duty. See more..

Stopped by on the way to the highland maple festival in McDowell and Monterey. The scenic view next to the parking lot is worth a quick stop. As the other review mentioned, the trail is best for it's historic marker story series and reconstructed civil war trenches. The best and most accessible view is in the parking lot. Their are other intersecting and close by historic trails in this national forest site. The trail marker next tot he bathroom highlights other hiking options. Don't miss the other marker sites on the state civil war trail further out towards the west virginia line on route 250. See more..
