  6. 4.5 Cinema Arts Theatre (164 reviews)
    - Cinema Arts- An independent Movie House
Thursday: 9:30 AM - 11:00 PM Movie Theaters
    Cinema Arts Theatre image
Not a megaplex, it’s a movie house. The seats are roomy and comfortable since the renovation. They’ve expanded food and beverage options to keep up with the large chain theaters, but that’s not why I go. It’s the theater that shows the festival films along with the big blockbusters. Small budget films with great story lines, brilliant actors and directors have screen time here. It’s locally owned and operated. The people there are not only part of the community but are heavily invested in it. Fairfax City has been mostly swallowed up by large corporate stores with no loyalty to their neighborhoods or customers. Cinema Arts Theater and it’s sister University Mall Theater are value for your dollar, often inspiring for your spirit and part of the FFX legacy. See more..

We arrived early to the movie theatre in order to select our seating. While we were waiting for the movie to start, we reviewed the menu, ordered our meals and sat back to wait. The food came quickly and, while not hot, was warm and was fairly good for typical movie fare. The service was excellent, during the course of the meal we were visited several times by service attendants. One note about serving size; they were large. We ordered a small popcorn and received a bowl that was typical of the traditional bucket and too much for even two people to share unless that is all you eat. The meals appear to be large enough that they can easily be shared if you preferred a smaller size meal, particularly during the matinee shows See more..

We had an opportunity to go to the Goochland Drive-In recently for a customer event, to see a Christmas Movie. We took our grandkids, and had a great time. It sure brought back memories of my childhood. The drive in is set up well, and the staff do an excellent job of reminding folks to turn off their lights, even wandering around during the movie to do so. And when it's over, they walk around with a battery jump kit to help anyone whose battery has ran down. We were also surprised by the concession stand, with the variety of food they had available. Our choices, cheeseburgers and tater tots, were very good. And the concession staff was very friendly. Can't wait to take the grandkids back for a summer movie. See more..

    Synetic Theater image
We are regulars at this theatre. I never know how to describe them, are they actors who can dance incredibly well or are they dancers who can act incredibly well? Whatever the case may be (and I think it's a bit of both), this is one of the most unique theater experiences you can get, and they never disappoint! I like their silent Shakespeare best - it's something you just have to experience. It's such an amazing feat to retell a Shakespeare play, with only movement/dance, music and lights, but voila, they do it and with such amazing, and often mezmerizing skill. See more..

We went for a Song of the Mountains concert and taping for PBS. This theatre is about 100 years old and beautifully restored. I understand that it is one of only 2 Mayan theme theatres in the country; and worth the visit just to see the theatre. Carson Peters and his band were great and another bluegrass band was just as good so really good entertainment. They had been closed for 10 months because of the pandemic so was great to see the first live performance in 10 months. I was in the area for work and saw this place when I was driving back to my hotel in nearby Big Stone Gap. Perhaps I'm just a naive city gal, but the opportunity to go to a drive in movie was too good to pass up! And what a place! It is like stepping back in time -- a time where you just sit in (or on) your car or pull out a couple of lawn chairs, eat a corn dog and experience the movies in the fresh open air! It's nestled in a little valley so you have the mountains, plus the movie screen to enjoy and a really amazing little snack booth. It was a real experience and I'd advise anyone to check it out. The owner/ticket lady said they were likely having to shut the place down due to financial issues and I really hope they don't. It would be a shame to lose an American classic like this. See more..

I have been attending (and participating in) Four County Players since summer 1985! - in fact I met my late husband backstage while doing "My Fair Lady." Among many things that have always impressed me about 4CP is their fearlessness. They are willing and able to take on any size or type of production, and do it extremely well. The caliber of the talent, be it dramatic, comedic, or musical, is across-the-board terrific. The venue is small (fewer than 200 seats) but charming, and there is a Bistro where refreshments can be purchased before the show, or during intermission. Try the brownies! Grab a partner or a friend and attend a production - you will have a wonderful evening (or afternoon). See more..
