5.0National D-Day Memorial(940 reviews) - An absolute must visit Thursday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Monuments & Statues
The National D-Day Memorial is located in Bedford, Virginia - the community suffering the highest per capita D-Day losses in the nation. The Memorial honors the Allied forces that participated in the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 during World War II. With its stylized English Garden, haunting invasion tableau, and striking Victory Plaza, the Memorial stands as a powerful permanent tribute to the valor, fidelity, and sacrifice of D-Day participants. The Memorial is encompassed by the names of the 4,413 Allied soldiers who died in the invasion, the most complete list of its kind anywhere in the world. Visitors can expect both an educational experience as well as an emotional one, as they walk the grounds at the Memorial and leave with a clear understanding of the scale and sacrifices made during the largest amphibious landing the world has ever seen. On June 6, 1944, 150,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which "we will accept nothing less than full victory." More than 5,000 ships and 11,000 aircraft supported the invasion, and by day's end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in France. The D-Day cost was high with more than 9,000 Allied soldiers killed or wounded as the march across Europe to defeat Hitler began.See more..

My wife and I recently visited Yorktown with friends. While there, we drove to the Victory Monument. This is a very cool historical location in our country’s early years. 4.5King Neptune Statue on the Boardwalk(299 reviews) - Larger than you expect and a great stop on the Boardwalk Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues • Scenic Walking Areas
This statue was very cool to stop and take a photo by during our boardwalk stroll. This statue is huge and there was a short line to take a photo in front of it. We went on a Tuesday so I'm assuming it will be busier on the weekends.See more..
My family & I stopped by to pay our respects to Gen. Jackson on New Years Eve. Though I've traveled through Lexington on a handful of occasions, I'd never visited the cemetery until this trip. The cemetery is a beautifully-kept area, filled with many of Lexington's early residents, including lots of CSA veterans. The highlight is certainly Stonewall Jackson, though. Certainly worth a few minutes of your time if you're passing by Lexington on 81 or 64, as it's an easy detour.See more..
4.5Fort Monroe National Monument(228 reviews) - Fascinating Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
So I had been wanting to visit Fort Monroe for a couple years and on a recent trip to the area, I made a point to stop there. The fort is surrounded by housing and a moat. There are at least two one way bridges across the moat and traffic lights at each to be sure that everyone is safe coming and going. There are still people living on the grounds of the fort so be sure to only park in the museum parking or the few other open parking areas. Outside the museum there is a handy walking guide that takes you to all the highlights I. And out of the fort. The huge tree and the Lincoln gun were really cool and walking along the wall allows for some lovely views out over the water. It was a great place to visit and I feel like I learned a lot. This monumental exhibit representing the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard is free, and open 24/7 as it's an outdoor display. Sandwiched between hotels, it's easy to overlook it, but the three service's flags are a clue. Very well done, it's well worth your time.See more..

Visit the house on the plantation where stonewall Jackson was taken after the battle of Chancellorsville to recover from his wounds, but would succumbed to his wounds six days later. The house was closed on the particular day we visited, but there were little history boards in every window about the rooms you were peeking into, the property itself and of course about Stonewell Jackson. The grounds are clean and well maintained. We were the only people visiting on the day & time we went, but can see how parking may be an issue in warmer weather months. Worth the little detour off of 95 to visit this fascinating piece of HistorySee more..
4.5Navy Seal Monument(77 reviews) - Very nice monument Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues
This monument is very well done. A gentleman came and was talking out loud in front of it, he wasn’t able to attend a fallen comrades funeral so he was having his say at the monument. It really drives home the why we need these monuments. There even a memorial section for the K-9a who have pass as well.See more..

4.5Armed Forces Memorial(58 reviews) - One of the Most Creative and Moving Monuments ... Monuments & Statues
I have ever viewed. The Norfolk Public Arts Commission with advice from a committee of veterans selected these letters from the military to their loved ones at home. It is not a grand or elaborate monument, but elegant in its simplicity. The letters lie on a corner of Town Point Park near Nauticus with a view onto the waterfront. Take a stroll from Nauticus or the park. Stay on the path along the water to this corner of Town Point Park. This is exceptional. Note: The Homecoming Statue is NOT part of the Armed Forces Memorial. It is in the park close to Waterside Dr.See more..
4.5Chincoteague Island Waterman's Memorial(30 reviews) - Great sunset views Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Monuments & Statues • Scenic Walking Areas
This place is a great spot to watch the sunset. It has a minimal walk to get to it. Located at the end of a marina it is not very clearly marked off. The view is so pretty and the signs with personal stories from the shipwrecks are humbling to read. It’s definitely a place I would recommend to go see when on the island. We wouldn’t have known to visit if your pony tour with Captain Dan wouldn’t have pointed it out during our tour. See more..

4.0Luray Singing Tower(23 reviews) - A unique experience Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Monuments & Statues
There is a one-hour concert on weekends. The recitalist is playing a carillon keyboard that ring a variety of bells. Be sure to go to the south side of the tower where you can see a livestream of the recitalist. He played a wide assortment of songs - from classical to contemporary to patriotic to folksy to songs from musicals. We had fun trying to see who could "name that tune". Nice park setting to enjoy something unique.See more..
4.0J. E. B Stuart Yellow Tavern Memorial(6 reviews) - One Little Know Battle; One Significant Casualty Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Battlefields • Monuments & Statues
I'm not a Civil War "buff," despite living in Richmond, the Capital of the Confederacy for five decades. But, you get to "hear" about the major Civil War battles. The Battle of Yellow Tavern took place in what is now northern Henrico County in a now-suburban residential and commercial area. J.E.B. Stuart was mortally wounded there on May 11, 1864. This is a monument erected "by some of his comrades to commemorate his virtues," as one of the inscriptions read. The monument was dedicated in 1888. It's really a pretty interesting bit of Civil War history very well explained on the historical marker at the base of the monument. This place is not hard to find, being just a little east and south of Virginia Center Commons.See more..
