  4. 4.5 Norfolk Botanical Garden (1.110 reviews)
    - Garden of Lights evening event
    Thursday: 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM Gardens
    Norfolk Botanical Garden image
We had visited this garden many years ago and enjoyed our springtime visit. We recently returned to see the Garden of Lights evening event, which we also enjoyed. Overall, the lights were very pretty. We liked that they have a one-way path through the lights; it keeps everyone going the same direction at generally the same pace. The path ends at the parking lot, but you can re-enter the main entrance building to use restrooms and visit the gift shop (but you cannot re-enter the garden to see the lights again). There was a food truck parked near the beginning of the route, but the line was very long; they could use another truck near the end as well. It only took us 75 minutes to walk through (we thought that the ticket price was a bit high for the short time we spent here); since we chose an early entrance time, there was still plentiful parking. 13. 4.5 State Arboretum of Virginia (95 reviews)
    - A Lovely Place
    Gardens
    State Arboretum of Virginia image
On the day that we visited, a few professional photographers were taking pictures of families. There are many opportunities to capture some beautiful scenery. If you visit during a hot summer’s day, take plenty of water. Pace yourself. Sit on the benches, and enjoy the sights and sounds. Be cognizant of the fact that many bees are in this area. Have a plan if you are allergic. Generally speaking, this is a quiet place that affords the visitor with many opportunities for relaxation. Listen to the birds and insects. Take the time to read the names of the plants on the plaques. Tree tunnels exist here. So, if you’re into tree tunnels, this is an added bonus. The main parking lot is tight. Overflow parking is available in the field that is adjacent to the herb gardens. See more..

  15. 4.0 Chesapeake Arboretum (84 reviews)
    - Beautiful trails
Nature & Wildlife Areas • Gardens
    Chesapeake Arboretum image
My husband, dog, and I walked the Chesapeake Arboretum trails for the first time today. We wanted fresh air and, due to COVID-19, not many people. We got it and loved it. The camellias were blooming, the trees had changed to their fall colors, and when we did cross paths with some other walkers, we had plenty of room to stay a safe distance. Lake Hughes was a pleasant surprise. With the Fall colors and ducks on the lake, our pictures were gorgeous. We're in our late 60s. We did have to watch the tree roots, but the day on the trails was so enjoyable. Kudos to the city of Chesapeake for well marked and nicely maintained trails. We'll definitely return. See more..

    - Good old fashioned dirty fun for kids
Thursday: 5:30 AM - 7:00 PM Spent 2-3 hours Gardens
Boxerwood Nature Center & Woodland Garden image
This has to be one of the coolest ideas ever. We spent about 2 hours on the kids play trail and could've been there much longer if the kids weren't hungry and tired. It's a wide open space in the woods with tons of cute things for kids to play with. There's a mudpie kitchen, a creek, a canoe, several tunnels to walk through, a tree house that looks like a giant birdhouse, a bone pit that kids can dig in and so much more. This is absolutely worth a trip out of the way to see. And we didn't even have time to see the rest of the park. The best part is it's free. We will definitely be back when we are in town again. See more..
  19. 4.5 Edgewood Plantation (37 reviews)
    - B&B plantation

    Edgewood Plantation image
Unfortunately I did not stay at the B&B; I just saw the sign for it as I was driving along the highway and stopped to view the house and property. You can call ahead to get a tour of the interior of the house for $15. I wish I had known ahead of time. It has some historical significance, as indicated on a marker, but the real prize seems to be the beauty of the grounds. See more..

Temporarily closed - Closed until Apr 15, 2023 Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Gardens
    Prestwould Plantation and Gardens image
I have toured a lot of historic sites and house museums. Prestwould is exceptional. The web site photos of the house and grounds do not do it justice. The interior furnishings - 80% original and documented - are fabulous but not shown on the website because photography inside is not allowed. This house is an undiscovered gem. Excellent tour guide and friendly staff. A must see! If you liked the James River plantations, you will LOVE Prestwould! See more..

    The Quarry Gardens image
June 6. It was so nice to get out and actually do something! We went to Quarry Gardens in Schuyler (pronounced SKY LA by locals), Virginia, south of Charlottesville. This is the private property of Bernice and Armand Thiebolt that consists of several abandoned soapstone quarries with the surrounding landscape that is being restored with native plants and woodlands. There is a mile long trail that winds around two of the water filled quarries. Reservations are required to keep tours small but there is no cost. Donations are greatly appreciated! I hope to visit several times a season to see the changes. Our group of nine was led by Bernice and she was knowledgeable about the plants and environment and she was excited about new discoveries. Walter's Greenhouse image
What I like best about the place is the amazing varieties of the plants available, especially the flowering plants. Something new and gorgeous every year. Today I came home with a flat full of 4" pots and planted several stunners before dinner. The owners are friendly and the plants very healthy. I buy plants here every year. See more..
