  1. 4.5 Dark Hollow Falls (563 reviews)
    - Stunning falls!
    Waterfalls
    Dark Hollow Falls image
To get to the trail head you can either park in the designated parking lot, or park at Big Meadows Lodge and walk down. (there is a ranger station and parking there). You can pick up the Story of the Forest Trail for a more scenic walk to the beginning of the Dark Hollow trail. The hike to the falls is down hill and shaded. Wear study shoes because it is uneven terrain. The walk back is all uphill, so be prepared! The falls are amazing! Everyone on the trail had masks and followed the “mask when you’re near people” rule. See more..
  2. 4.5 Crabtree Falls (289 reviews)
    - Nature Hike
    Waterfalls
    Crabtree Falls image
It is series of cascades punctuated by several falls. The base of the falls is an easy hike. That’s where the easy part ends. It had just rained and the trail was muddy. It’s 1.7 miles to the top, almost uphill all the way with many steps and railings. The falls can be seen intermittently from the trail. We made it 0.6 miles and saw a lot. We are in our seventies and decided to descend. Other hikers cautioned us that going higher would be even more strenuous. See more..
  3. 5.0 Cascade Falls (194 reviews)
    - Great hike
    Thursday: 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM Waterfalls
    Cascade Falls image
We visited on a perfect weather day! The hike up was worth it to see the waterfall. Both paths were well traveled but everyone took their space to make sure they were social distanced. People were swimming and playing in the waterfall but they were braver than we were, the water was a little chilly! See more..
  4. 4.5 Falling Springs Waterfall (181 reviews)
    - Beautiful 80' Falls in VA!
    Spent < 1 hour Waterfalls
    Falling Springs Waterfall image
I was worried that the fact we could only view from the overlook and not up close would mean it wasn't a great view, but it actually was a great view! I was not disappointed. In fact, we visited 3 times during our stay at the nearby Omni Homestead. I even brought my tripod and we took slow shutter speed photos as well as photos of us together in front of the falls. This is such a nice place to visit and anyone passing through the area should make the stop. They added picnic tables to the parking lot so you can stay awhile too (though there is no view from the parking lot). Out of the three times we went, one time was fairly crowded (middle of the day), second time there was only one other group there (close to sunset), and the third time we were the only ones (close to sunset the next day). 5. 4.5 Rose River Falls (127 reviews)
    - Beautiful scenery
    Waterfalls
    Rose River Falls image
We have hiked many of the trails in Shenandoah National Park and this is one of the best. Parking at Fishers Gap Overlook and an adjacent area was plentiful and the trail was well-marked. A map of this area of the park that is on the website was helpful. We hiked this trail following a day of heavy rain and the cascades and waterfall were fast-moving and full. The trail was sometimes wet but is well-engineered. The trail to Rose River Falls was easier than the following section which was rocky and steep. This section might be too much for some children. Returning to our car at Fishers Gap via the recommended fire road was a welcomed change after the rocky trail. We are in our early 70s and found this trail to be a bit challenging but the scenery made it so worthwhile. See more..
  6. 4.5 Doyles River Falls (36 reviews)
    - Doyles River Falls & Jones Run Falls Cricut hike
    Waterfalls
    Doyles River Falls image
There are three different places to park and start your hike. We parked at the Browns Gap Parking lot and did the cricut hike counter clockwise. If you are not up for a challenge, I would suggest doing the hike clockwise. The fire road from Browns Gap to the Upper Doyles falls is downhill. Then it's downhill (steep downhill) from the Upper Falls to the lower falls. From the lower falls to Jones Run Falls & it's parking lot is uphill, but not as steep as it was between the Upper & Lower Doyles Falls. We hiked this trail on 10/13. The trail was muddy with several stream crossing. One of the stream crossing you had to walk on a log to cross without getting wet. All three of the falls were gorgeous. A third of the hike is next to water. There are a bunch a little falls. This was probably is my second favorite hike with hiking Old Rag being my first. See more..

  9. 5.0 Roaring Run Falls (16 reviews)
    - Great Hike with Waterfalls and History
    Spent 2-3 hours Waterfalls
    Roaring Run Falls image
We took our dog for a short hike on Roaring Run Loop Trail. It's less than 2 miles, but packs in a lot of scenery. We started on the Streamside Trail that follows Roaring Run upstream. There are a number of nice cascades and slides along the creek. At the next intersection, a left turn goes a short ways to Roaring Run Falls. Even on this short spur, there are a number of slides and small falls. But you'll know when you reach the main falls. It's about 35 feet and really nice as the flow splits around a big rock. Taking the Woodlands Trail back, the other side of the loop goes up above the creek and ends near the Roaring Run Furnace, a 19th century iron furnace. See more..
  10. 4.5 Big Cedar Creek Falls (13 reviews)
    - Beautiful and Well Marked Trails

    Big Cedar Creek Falls image
I live within an hour of the area but had never heard of it. Was not expecting it to be so well maintained and beautiful. Swinging bridge at the parking area is well made and very sturdy. The rails are wide and marked well. Very little chance of getting lost. The falls are beautiful and not as dangerous as some others in the area. These trails are suitable for all ages and all abilities. Very relaxing shady, wooded trails. See more..
  11. 4.0 Panther Falls (11 reviews)

So, yes it's hard to find and just when you have given up the will to live you find it. Be prepared for a long bumpy drive. The walk through the woods is easy, but take water and snacks. Have gone for a swim when the weather allows. It is special! See more..
  12. 5.0 Dismal Falls (9 reviews)
    - Easy walk to the falls
    Spent 1-2 hours Waterfalls
    Dismal Falls image
Probably one of the easiest lovelies falls to get to from a parking area. Trail is a little steep and slippery but very short. Once you enjoy the views of the falls, hike away from them or above them to splash in the water. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy time away from the crowds on a weekday sunning on a rock with your feet in the water. Might even find your own personal water hole. See more..

  14. 4.5 Nottoway Falls (3 reviews)
    - New inTown loved the falls!
    Waterfalls
    Nottoway Falls image
I was so excited to find Nottoway Falls and to see one the Southside Virginia's most beautiful natural spots. It seems quite underrated and remote surprisingly. I can imagine it full of people exploring the falls and trails, kids playing in the shallow areas, a food stand, rental kayaks, and people picnicking on the rocks. But not a soul was there which I know can be nice too. The graffiti was mostly cool, there was an old rope hanging where I'm sure people would swing and jump off, and the trails were of easy to moderate difficulty/ . I loved it and will be back! 16. 5.0 Overall Run Swimming Hole (1 review)
    - VERY EASY hike with BIG reward at the end .Not to be confused with Overall Run Falls
Thursday: 12:00 AM - 11:59 PM Spent More than 3 hours Bodies of Water • Waterfalls
    Overall Run Swimming Hole image
My family of 3 (two adults and one 8-year old child) were in search of a swimming hole in Shenandoah National park. We did not see this in Trip advisor as most of the review were describing Overall Run falls which was 2 miles away from the Swimming Hole. I feel that this place should have its own review and listing to help travelers distinguish it from the Falls. It is often listed as part of the Overall Run Loop trail in other sites which is rated Difficult or Hard. However, the Swimming Hole starts at Thompson Hollow Trail head. Take route 340 to get to Bentonville VA, Turn east to route 613, and then south at route 630. This road will end in 2 miles. Park here then walk the rest of the gravel path about 0.2 miles. do not be confused with many private property signs. Stay on the gravel path until you see well worn foot path off to the right. this will bring you to the boundary of the Shenandoah National park. The trail is well marked with NP signs at the beginning with blue trail blaze on the trees. Follow trail to Overall Run and you should see the swimming holes in about a mile. There are 3 swimming holes in the area formed by the cascades of the Overall Run. There is a natural slide formed by the cascades which makes for a fun slide for kids and kids at heart. it does get busy on weekends and holidays and litter can be a problem. our family enjoyed it so much that we went back on a weekday and it was almost empty. I hope tripadvisor list this place separate from Overall Run Falls. See more..
