  1. 4.5 Yorktown Battlefield (1.665 reviews)
    - Very Informative
    Historic Sites • Battlefields
    Yorktown Battlefield image
There is a visitor center with some exhibits and a 15 minute video which is helpful in understanding what happened at the battle. There was a ranger giving a talk outside, but there was no published schedule of when those programs were happening. We downloaded the (free) app and took the driving tour. You are able to go at your own pace and stop at each place and get out to look around. Definitely recommend getting out at the Redoubts (walk down the path to the left to see the redoubt structure) and Surrender Field (there is an overlook and a path down to see the cannons that were surrendered by Cornwallis). Recommend doing the "red" tour as a minimuim, but the "yellow" route was also interesting. Our 13 year old was very interested, and kids 15 and under are free. You can save your receipt and get a 50% discount at Historic Jamestown within 7 days. (If you have already visited Historic Jamestown, then the battlefield is free) See more..

Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park image
I wasn't sure what to expect; but this was my favorite part of our visit to Fredericksburg. The park rangers were incredibly knowledgeable and very passionate about their work, as was the historic reenactor. We did the self-guided tour but the map and the signage was really interesting and informative and I liked that it was a tour you could do in about an hour without spending all day there. See more..

    Petersburg National Battlefield Park image
We didn't plan on spending much time here as we had planned to visit Richmond instead. However we stopped real quick before they closed and learned that a group of people acting in war time would there the next day. So, we changed our plans and came back in the morning. What a great experience!!!! They were they to work on some of the buildings on stop 3, but the history lesson we got was amazing!!! We stopped at all the stops and learned so much!! The tunnel to the crater was closed, but we were still able to see it. Only bad part was there were no garage bins open after you leave the visitors center; but they have signs that say "don't liter" See more..

Fredericksburg Battlefield and Visitor Center image
As you may have noticed, the Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania area is steeped in history and there is no lack of battlefields to walk through. If you are a history buff and even if you are not, this is truly a once in a lifetime experience and I highly recommend you take the time to visit our battlefields. The Fredericksburg Battlefield in particular is unique because of its location and the "steps" that house many of the graves. On Memorial Day, boy scouts in our area put together luminarias for each grave site and they are lit at dusk. mThis will take your breath away. See more..

Be sure that you go to the right museum! There is another museum at the entrance to the park that people mistake for the battlefield..but it is privately owned. We unfortunately went to that Civil War museum, then realized our mistake and arrived at the State Park too late in the day to tour. The Park looks amazing and we will be back on another day. 11. 4.5 Cold Harbor Battlefield Park (128 reviews)
    - Visitor Center was Closed

    Cold Harbor Battlefield Park image
So when I finally got to the visitor center after stopping at the Garthright House and the cemetery, I made my way to the Cold Harbor Visitor center. There is a decent sized parking lot there and some information signs. I looked at these first and then tried to enter the Visitor Center. It was closed. I tried to call the number on the sign to find out why, but the number didn't work. I then called the number in the NPS brochure and talked to a very nice man. The Visitor Center was closed due to power outages in the area that were affecting them. He gave me info over the phone about the hiking trails and the one-way road that goes through the park (and I told him about the phone number issue; if in doubt just look in the brochure for their number). As it was super cold and windy, I opted to just do the drive through the battlefield. There were three stops with signs about the battle and troop movements. It was very well done and informative. 12. 4.5 Richmond National Battlefield Park (99 reviews)
    - Richmond National Battlefield Park
    Battlefields
    Richmond National Battlefield Park image
Richmond National Battlefield Park encompasses several Civil War sites in and around the city of Richmond. I visited two sites, Chimborazo Park and Cold Harbor. Chimborazo Park includes the Medical Museum, which was closed at the time of my visit. Fortunately, there is a plague outside which gives a brief overview of the building's history. The park is medium-sized. I visited at mid-day on a Sunday. There were a fair amount of people in the park, but it wasn't crowded. I walked to the western end of the park, which gives a good view of the city below. The Powhatan stone is also located at the western end of Chimborazo Park. My second stop was Cold Harbor, which was out of the city. Cold Harbor is currently the only site with an open visitor center. I did a short driving tour. The tour is mostly wooded. Civil war earthworks are still visible along part of the road. See more..

Kernstown Battlefield and Pritchard House image
We visited the Battlefield July 4th weekend, it was amazing! The view is so incredible from up on the hill, where we were driven in a golf cart, with a great description from the tour guide. Then we took a tour in the visitors center, but the best of all was a visit to the Field Hospital. There the docent did a complete, interesting and informative talk on the items in the cases, and all the artifacts that were in the room. She knew her subject matter thoroughly, and we learned so much about the hospital experience from the war. Highly recommended !! See more..

    Nelson House image
One of the clerks at the Visitor Center recommended this as a “must see” in Historic Yorktown. Why? Yes, it was the home of Thomas Nelson Jr. who served in the House of Burgess and as a delegate to the Continental Congress. Other notable information includes he signed the Declaration of Independence, served as governor of Virginia and commanded the Virginia militia at Yorktown. The home was used as a Confederate Hospital in the Civil War and also served as Lord Cornwallis’ headquarters during the siege of Yorktown. Walk the grounds of the home taking note of the cannonballs still imbedded on the side and top of the home. See more..

Petersburg National Battlefield - Five Forks Unit image
Five Forks is the junction of five roads and was of critical strategic importance to the Confederacy. Lee ordered it held "at all hazards". Artillery Colonel Willie Pegram fell amongst his battery cannon at the junction attempting to comply with Lee's command. The victorious Union cavalry at the battle included Sheridan and Custer. A small visitor center has an excellent film on the decisive battle. An interesting battlefield hidden among the woods of Dinwiddie County. Excellent ranger on duty. See more..
  24. 4.0 J. E. B Stuart Yellow Tavern Memorial (6 reviews)
    - One Little Know Battle; One Significant Casualty
    Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Battlefields • Monuments & Statues
    J. E. B Stuart Yellow Tavern Memorial image
I'm not a Civil War "buff," despite living in Richmond, the Capital of the Confederacy for five decades. But, you get to "hear" about the major Civil War battles. The Battle of Yellow Tavern took place in what is now northern Henrico County in a now-suburban residential and commercial area. J.E.B. Stuart was mortally wounded there on May 11, 1864. This is a monument erected "by some of his comrades to commemorate his virtues," as one of the inscriptions read. The monument was dedicated in 1888. It's really a pretty interesting bit of Civil War history very well explained on the historical marker at the base of the monument. This place is not hard to find, being just a little east and south of Virginia Center Commons. See more..

Jackson's flank attack was the crucial element in Lee's victory at Chancellorsville. The movie there lays out the whole battle and there is extensive interpretive information. Well worth it. See more..

Battle of Cloyd's Mountain - Virginia Historical Marker image
Great view! Unfortunately there is little to see other than the marker. But one can easily imagine the great difficulty incurred artillery, cavalry and infantry assailing the steep inclines. Historians tell us that the Calvary had a dismount in order to move up the mountainside. The Confederates lost more than 25% of their troops involved in the action, while the union lost approximately 10%. The battle lasted little more than an hour, but was decisive in cutting off the last route between Virginia and Tennessee. See more..
  30. 3.5 Fisher's Hill (5 reviews)
    - Fisher's Hill Battlefield, Fisher's Hill, VA
    Battlefields
    Fisher's Hill image
Just off of Rte 11 (Old Valley Pike) sits Fisher's Hill Battlefield. This area is largely undeveloped with 2 interpretive signs, a mowed path allowing visitors to walk to the top of the "Gibraltar of the Shenandoah", and the iconic split rail fence that can be found at nearly all Civil War battlefields. The site has no facilities but is close enough to Strausburg and Tom's Brook (both Civil War battlefields in their own right) to snag a beverage or snack. The sign on the very top of the hill is weather-worn and unreadable and hopefully will be replaced in the near future. See more..

Stopped by on the way to the highland maple festival in McDowell and Monterey. The scenic view next to the parking lot is worth a quick stop. As the other review mentioned, the trail is best for it's historic marker story series and reconstructed civil war trenches. The best and most accessible view is in the parking lot. Their are other intersecting and close by historic trails in this national forest site. The trail marker next tot he bathroom highlights other hiking options. Don't miss the other marker sites on the state civil war trail further out towards the west virginia line on route 250. See more..

  35. 2.5 Brandy Station Battlefield (2 reviews)
    - Largest Cavalry Battle of the Civil War
Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Battlefields
We saw signage near Elkwood so we decided to check it out. It is on the road to Culpepper Regional Airport beyond the main areas. It has a small gravel parking area from which you can see several kiosks along a footpath on a small rise. We were surprised that there was not much information beyond the kiosks given the nature of the battle. The site is preserved by the Civil War Preservation Trust. We did not stop at the nearby Brandy Station Foundation Visitor Center since it was late in the day. See more..
