Yorktown Battlefield, Virginia, United States

4.5 (1.665 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Yorktown Historic Sites • Battlefields

Very Informative

There is a visitor center with some exhibits and a 15 minute video which is helpful in understanding what happened at the battle. There was a ranger giving a talk outside, but there was no published schedule of when those programs were happening. We downloaded the (free) app and took the driving tour. You are able to go at your own pace and stop at each place and get out to look around. Definitely recommend getting out at the Redoubts (walk down the path to the left to see the redoubt structure) and Surrender Field (there is an overlook and a path down to see the cannons that were surrendered by Cornwallis). Recommend doing the "red" tour as a minimuim, but the "yellow" route was also interesting. Our 13 year old was very interested, and kids 15 and under are free. You can save your receipt and get a 50% discount at Historic Jamestown within 7 days. (If you have already visited Historic Jamestown, then the battlefield is free)

    Very nice visit
Two seniors spent about four hours touring the actual Yorktown Battlefield and National Parks Service visitor center. Well worth the time. Great displays and orientation film in the visitor center. Had an excellent walking tour near the visitor center led by a park ranger who was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We used the free audio tour driving app to drive around about half of the actual battlefield. The app was great and the battlefield was very interesting. A great complement to Williamsburg and Jamestown. We decided to spend a week in the Williamsburg area so we purchased the America's Historic Triangle Ticket with seven consecutive days' admission for Colonial Williamsburg that includes admission to these museums, Historic Jamestowne/Jamestowne Rediscovered, Jamestown Settlement, American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, and Yorktown Battlefield. Other ticket combinations are also available. See their website.

    Wonderful job by the NPS
This is funded by the National Park Service, so you need to pay to park around the battlefield areas. It is a beautiful area, and they've done a great job setting it up so that you can really get a feel for where the Americans/French faced the British in the Revolutionary War. This was an important battle. Inside, there is a fullsized replica (1/4 of it, at least) of a warship of that time that you can walk through. The 16 minute film gives you a little backstory before you go out on the battlegrounds. Great place for kids and adults. You can spend as little or as much time as you like. Most of the tour is outside, so go on a nice day, when you can walk around. NPS employees were so nice!
