At nearly 18 miles long, this bridge-tunnel complex is one of the engineering wonders of the world. Connecting Virginia's Eastern Shore with Virginia's mainland in Virginia Beach/Norfolk, this toll facility will save travelers 90 miles or more as they travel from points north of Wilmington, Delaware and head down the East Coast towards Virginia Beach or North Carolina's Outer Banks. Enjoy a stop at the Scenic Overlook, located on the southern tip of Virginia's Eastern Shore, offering breathtaking views of the Chesapeake Bay and the facility. AND, if you want to take home a remembrance of your travels, visit Virginia Originals Gift Shop, located inside the Welcome Center and Rest Area at the North Toll Plaza on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Construction of the Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel is underway and the facility will remain open to traffic throughout construction. Upon completion, a new fishing pier will open on the southernmost island in 2024. Don't forget your E-ZPass! See more..

We were camping at the Shenandoah Valley Campground LLC, it was a right turn out to of the camp to Meems Road. And came to the bridge and stopped to look at the inside archetype. Very impressed how the wood wrapped around the wall studs. Over all we liked what we saw. See more..

    Buchanan Swinging Bridge image
We made a special detour to see the Buchanan Swinging Bridge. We arrived after dark on a frigid night in November. The bridge itself is not lit but there was enough light to read the signs and walk across safely. The entrance was on the overpass/car bridge and the swinging bridge seems at a very odd angle over the river. The sign said only 3 people but there were 4 of us. The bridge is pretty robust for a pedestrian bridge and had stone piles for stability & support. See more..

    Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel image
My wife and I were routed through here going from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach. Driving under a bay is definitely a unique experience, but the traffic to get into it was absolutely brutal. When we first left the hotel, Siri said we had a 45 minute trip ahead of us. 2 hours and 15 minutes later, we arrived at our destination.... Most of this extra time came in the form of a total stand-still on the interstate for over an hour waiting to get into this tunnel. See more..
