  2. 5.0 Chrysler Museum of Art (1.017 reviews)
    - World-class museum that puts many others to shame.
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Art Museums
    Chrysler Museum of Art image
I’m still stunned over what I just experienced. I have trouble fathoming that a world-class museum is in Norfolk, but this compares favorably to anything I’ve seen, anywhere. Period. The museum isn’t particularly large, so I only planned to spend maybe an hour. I spent three hours. The quantity and variety of works is very good, but the quality of what’s on display is the differentiator. This museum doesn’t just display stuff to fill shelves, it displays things other museums simply can’t, because Chrysler was apparently a very picky collector. And astonishingly, I was told that they only have room to display about 30% of the overall collection. Admission is only $3, and most astonishingly, they ENCOURAGE you to take pictures to share your experience. That’s really very, very rare in a top tier museum. My very highest recommendation… 5+ stars. See more..

Museum of the Shenandoah Valley image
The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) is dedicated to preserving and enriching the cultural life and heritage of the Valley. This regional history complex includes a house dating to the eighteenth century, six acres of spectacular gardens, and a 50,000-square-foot museum featuring changing exhibitions, a permanent display of miniature houses, and an expansive gallery exploring the history and decorative arts of the Shenandoah Valley. The galleries are open year-round; the house and gardens April through October. The property was passed through generations of Wood and Glass families until being acquired by Wood descendant and MSV benefactor Julian Wood Glass Jr. (1910–1992) between 1952 and 1955. Glass and his partner at the time, R. Lee Taylor (1924–2000), worked together to transform the site and its Glen Burnie House—built in 1794 by James Wood’s son Robert—into a country retreat where the couple entertained in high style. Randolph College’s Maier Museum of Art houses an outstanding collection of American art from the 19th-21st centuries, chiefly paintings, works on paper, and photographs. The Maier serves the College community and public, offering changing exhibits, rotating displays of the collection, and programs. Artists include Mary Cassatt, Thomas Cole, Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keeffe, Gilbert Stuart, and Andrew Wyeth. In 1951, facing nuclear threat by the Soviet Union, the National Gallery of Art chose Randolph-Macon Woman’s College as the site of a secret storage facility to safeguard the nation’s art treasures. Given the code name “Project Y,” construction was supervised by NGA staff, and it was dedicated December 11, 1952. Though never used by the NGA, the College maintained and insured the facility for 50 years. It remained listed as an emergency location until 1979 and a 1983 endowment established by the Pauline and Sarah Maier Scholarship Fund created today’s Maier Museum. See more..

This is a nice visit for art lovers and art fearers alike. It's not the NY Met, overwhelming and intimidating. It's a beautiful, small, well-located, and free museum in the center of Staunton. Yet, it has accessible and changing historical exhibits -- when we visited there was an early American silver exhibit along with historical wine-growing maps of France -- and also features local artists. You'll be in and out within less than an hour. Go! See more..

South Boston - Halifax County Museum image
Terrific museum. Tracks history of the County but also has a timeline to see how it fits into larger US and world events. History includes Native Americans [lovely old dug out canoe that floated to the surface after a storm!], settlers including Free Blacks, wars and peace time life. Staff [receptionist and director, sorry don't remember names] were very knowledgeable and helpful. Was great to have a better sense of the world we were driving through. Love that they are also doing special events and still updating things, not just resting on past exhibits. See more..
