Very educational, beautiful grounds
My husband and I took the "Through My Eyes" tour which is about 90 minutes, totally worth the price. The historian/tour guide was dressed in period clothing portrayed himself as Washington's private assistant/secretary. The historian had extensive scholarly knowledge of the enslaved and of General Washington as a commander and our first President and of his life with Martha while living at Mt. Vernon. The historian was extremely thorough and kept his audience fully engaged in his talk. The grounds of Mt. Vernon are beautiful.

Love my short 3 hour visit
I highly recommend going out of your way to visit this site! I could have spent an entire day here but only had one morning to spare. It was well worth our 3 hour visit. We saw the museum, mansion tour, cattle, sheep, garden, slaves quarters and tomb. The 4d theater is worth the wait. You may see a long line up for the movie but you can easily get in as there is plenty of seating. I reserved tickets online for the mansion tour but then checked at the counter upon arrival to see if I could get an earlier time. I was able to get an earlier time. For this reason I would not suggest paying the $2 per person to reserve a tour ahead of time. I did visit on a rainy Sunday morning so perhaps it would be more essential to have a tour booked if the weather were nicer. There is currently construction on the exterior of the mansion so that takes away from its appearance...just an fyi if photography is your sole purpose.
