Beautiful views

Welcome to Pikes Peak - America's Mountain! The Pikes Peak Highway entrance is conveniently located 15 minutes west of Colorado Springs on Highway 24. The beauty of being so close to the city is that you can spend your time enjoying the mountain instead of getting to the mountains. Plan for your round trip journey to the summit to take 2-3 hours. The safe, scenic highway provides you the opportunity to enjoy Pikes Peak at your leisure. From the gateway at an elevation of 7,400 feet, you'll encounter some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world as you wind your way through an alpine wonderland of scenic beauty, mountain reservoirs, beyond timberline, overtaking the clouds...All along the way to the 14,115 foot summit of America's most famous mountain. Along the way, you'll discover the North Slope Recreation Area, Crystal Reservoir Gift Shop, Historic Glen Cove Inn, and the Summit House. There are three lakes for fishing, picnic areas, hiking trails, and breathtaking views. Stop and watch one of our "Meet the Ranger" Interpretive Programs and learn about the history, myths, flora and fauna on the mountain. All offer visitor services and basic necessities to make your day both enjoyable and memorable.

Must see in CO Springs area
First things first….go early in the day. You need to buy your tickets onto the mountain ahead of time and would recommend heading up the mountain no later than 10am. The traffic becomes dense and while the speed limits are 25 mph it only takes one slow car to make the 20 mile trek up the mountain feel like rush hour traffic in any major city. The second thing to know is that as you ascend the mountain there are some very steep climbs that provide some serious moments of concentration while driving. As you get close to the top there are a few areas that make you feel as though you are driving to the edge of the world. The drive to the top takes about 45 minutes assuming everyone is moving at a decent rate of speed. Once at the top you will realize it was well worth the effort. It is a spectacular setting with breath taking views, The visitor center is worth the time and leave plenty of time for pictures and just taking it all in. As you descend take it easy on the brakes. If you don’t you will fail the mandatory brake check about 1/3 of the way down the mountain. If this happens you are gently ushered to a side parking lot to wait for your brakes to cool. Take a jacket with you, because the temps at the top of mountain in the summer are in the low 50’s and very windy.

We drove up to the top of Pikes Peak. Be sure to go online & purchase a timed entry permit ticket. They only let so many vehicles in during a set time. We had the 10-noon entry permit. I would highly recommend doing the earlier time 8-10am, as it might not be as busy. When we arrived on the road to Pikes Peak at 11am, the cars were backed up a long way. It took us awhile to get to the North Pole tourist attraction & at that point, cars were tuning around. By the time we finally made it up to the area where it breaks into three lanes to get through a check point, we were still barely moving. People were getting out of their vehicles & going over to the pit toilets & back to their vehicle that had barely moved while they were gone. Don't understand why, with three lanes, & everyone already purchasing tickets online ahead of time, why the park employees were taking so long to let each vehicle through. It took us over an hour to get through the line at entrance to the park!! The drive up was beautiful, breathtaking, & a little scary at times, especially when someone riding a bicycle is on the outside curve you are trying to get around!!. The views at the top were also beautiful. I would recommend that your vehicle & brakes are in good working condition. They stop you half way down to take the temperature of your brakes & will have you pull over if they are too hot. I enjoyed the drive up & down, but will not do it again. The extremely long wait just to get into the park to drive up the mountain & all the vehicles going slowly up & down the mountain took away from the enjoyment of the experience.
