  8. 4.5 Florissant Fossil Quarry (74 reviews)
    - The Thrill of Discovery
    Mines
    Florissant Fossil Quarry image
Anyone who is not fascinated by opening a rock and finding a 32 million year old clearly reconizable fossil has lost all sense of adventure. At $15/hour/person the cost is reasonable and while fossil finding can not be guaranteed, the odds of success are high. The staff is helpful - make sure you get a demoinstration and instruction. Young children may require parental assistance in working with razor blade "splitters." Really an excellent opportunity to fuel and expand interest and knowledge of paleontolgy (no dinsour fossils at this Eocene site), earth science, ecology, geology and so on. Works best when paired with a visit to Florrisant Fossil Beds National Monument (next door). See more..
