This is a 1891 silver mine that is being restored and open- free to see. It has rock and mineral collecting, old buildings, its own museum and mine buildings. Anyone who is not fascinated by opening a rock and finding a 32 million year old clearly reconizable fossil has lost all sense of adventure. At $15/hour/person the cost is reasonable and while fossil finding can not be guaranteed, the odds of success are high. The staff is helpful - make sure you get a demoinstration and instruction. Young children may require parental assistance in working with razor blade "splitters." Really an excellent opportunity to fuel and expand interest and knowledge of paleontolgy (no dinsour fossils at this Eocene site), earth science, ecology, geology and so on. This is a pull-off along the Million Dollar Highway with some great views. Info boards tell about the history of this area and the silver mining that took place here.
