4.5Mt Pisgah Cemetery(10 reviews) - A beautiful war memorial at the entrance & intriguiging old headstones Spent 1-2 hours Cemeteries
There are very interesting headstones here and a little known fact is that if you hike up the hill of the cemetery to the top, you will actually get to see the Continental Divide. It is a spectacular view.See more..
In the 1860s and 1870s, Fort Lyon was a most important place in Southeast Colorado. From here, the infamous Col. Chivington marched his cavalry to the Sand Creek where he massacred a peaceful Cheyenne village. In the surgeons quarters, the great Frontier hero, Kit Carson, died. Legend says that the little chapel on the National Cemetery was build from the bricks of this quarters, so it is called "Kit Carson Chapel". Everybody who has a sense for history should visit this place.See more..
How does a person review a cemetery? Every town has one someplace. Most are forgotten, or were bypassed when a new highway was built. Even in the driest parts of the country, the cemetery usually stands out like an oasis in the town. There is wildlife, and mature, beautiful trees here. My mind sees 1874 when the trees were probably saplings planted for the first occupants of the cemetery. Greeley is dry. The cemetery has a water source to keep things green. The roads are well maintained. Everything is orderly and well kept. Always take the marked business loop into towns when traveling. Most cemeteries are on the old alignment of the current highway. Stop a moment not for the dead, but for the living plants and wildlife cemeteries attract. If you have visited an area's museum; walk the headstones in the older section of the cemetery. It can be interesting to find the headstones of area pioneers, and read the headstones.See more..
5.0Hillside Cemetery(5 reviews) - Full of history and unique headstones Spent < 1 hour Cemeteries
On a recent visit to camp in Silverton we decided to visit the cemetery late at night and really had an interesting visit. We looked up the history of the cemetery and found out a lot of interesting and fascinating facts about the cemetery and people buried there. It’s a beautiful spot, great views of the area and I highly recommend visiting. Probably during the day to take in the full experience.See more..
Cemeteries are part of the culture and history. Whenever is an opportunity, I try to go and see these places. You can learn about the city, about the people. I've visited this place only once. I was planing to comeback in different part of the day, but unfortunately there was no time for that. I've missed the graves related to the mining tragedy. Location of this place is so beautiful. 5.0Knights of Pythias Cementery(1 review) - Unusual and self-guided Spent 1-2 hours Cemeteries • Mysterious Sites Yes, it's a spooky place and very different from the other cemeteries in the area. It has an entry gate that opens to a wooded area with some very creative tombstones. Seeing the same vista as the pioneers did in the 1800's is pretty cool. I would image this is a great flashlight tour at night. Be a little adventurous! Not sure if I'd have a picnic in the cemetery, but certainly all around it.See more..
4.0St. Joseph Cemetery(1 review) - A Baby Cememtery?!?! Cemeteries I love cemeteries, and this place blew my mind. Drive straight in and you'll come to a huge statue with three white crosses, dedicated to all babies ever aborted. As if that's not weird enough, look around. I walked to the right and saw a lot of the headstones had toys on them & quickly realized all the graves were small children. Most were under two years old when they died. It was kind of creepy. You would think people would bury their dead babies on a family plot, next to where the parents will be buried. I don't know. Maybe St. Joseph ran a terrible orphanage with a high mortality rate?? There are other graves closer to the gate that aren't children. Some have beautiful iron-work. The whole baby section was just crazy though. Never heard of such a thing, and I've been to a lot of cemeteries.See more..
