5.0Maroon Bells(2.609 reviews) - WOW. Get a car pass early. You have more flexibility. Mountains
We were on a 16 day trip comprising 13 states and this was one of the highlights. The whole trip revolved around being here on October 6 and 7 for the sunset and sunrise. Back in July we got an online vehicle pass, $10, for the sunset on the 6th and one for the sunrise on the 7th. We needed them to enter and to park, however, when we got there in the morning no one was in the entry booth at 6:15 am. We were very fortunate that we had excellent weather for both. Our principal goal was photography. We saw a very nice fox right where you enter the viewing area. See the image. We also two moose on the way out in the evening. Much to our surprise the water level was quite low but we enjoyed our images non the less. This scene reminded us of Moraine Lake in Banf National Park Canada. Both beautiful areas.See more..
5.0Mount Evans(2.567 reviews) - A few tips for a spectacular drive. Go early! Mountains
From the top of Mount Evans, you’ll have the neighboring mountains and the Great Plains at your feet. To get there, drive from the town of Idaho Springs all the way to the mountaintop, pulling over occasionally to soak up the commanding views of the surroundings. The hike to the summit from the parking lot takes less than 10 minutes. Make sure you visit in the warmer months, as the road to Mount Evans is closed for the best part of the year. If you’re up for some intense trekking, hike the 5.3-mile trail from Summit Lake. – TripadvisorSee more..
4.5Great Sand Dunes National Park(998 reviews) - What a fun experience! Spent More than 3 hours Mountains • National Parks • Deserts
This was so much fun! Sand boarding down the sand dunes was my favorite thing I did in Colorado. Here are some tips: 1. If you are looking to rent a sand board or sled, there is a place called Great Sand Dunes Oasis. This place is close to the sand dunes and is on your way to and back. It’s only $20 for a board or a sled. You are able to rent them but gotta return to the store before they close. 2. The visitor fee to the sand dunes is $25. 3. I would recommend wearing sandals or water shoes to the sand dunes. There is quite a walk to the actual sand dunes. There is an area in the middle that you have to cross that have water flowing through. So expect to get your feet wet. Plus if you are renting a sand board/ sled, they recommend you to use it barefoot or with socks on.See more..

Not an easy hike but the reward is worth the effort! Spectacular views!!!! Started at trailhead (north) at 5:35 am and lot was pretty full on weekday. The four of us (21, 54, 56, and 60) summited by 11:30 with breaks included. The trail is constant slope up but not too difficult until you teach a rockier section about 2/3rds up. Slow and steady and you can reach the summit. Bring plenty of water (min 2 liters, best 3 liters); we also ‘hide’ some water at tree line for the descend. Make sure to acclimate yourself prior to hike. We planned 5 days prior to the hike and we were ok but still catching your breath near summit. Saw some picas, chipmunks, and a momma bird with chick. Enjoyed the views for an hour then headed down as storm clouds approaching. Lite rain started but we were down in tree line. Luckily short lite rain passed by quickly. Hike was simply beautiful, majestic and the feeling of accomplishment fantasticSee more..

5.0Imogene Pass(143 reviews) - One of the most scenic views in all of Ouray Colorado - Imogene Pass Mountains
Imogene pass is not for the faint of heart. We were lucky enough to take Alpine Scenic Jeep Tours in our tour guide was funny informative and kept his cool the entire time The trip was somewhat adventurous and did have its problems the driver said that he had tried to get up this past four times earlier and due to the rain in the mud it was just not doable but we got lucky and plowed through and made it to the top. If you ever wanted to know what it was like to be in Switzerland without actually going there, you would want to take this journey. The sights the colors the blue skies and the flowers were just amazing. Thanks to the crackerjack crew of the company and the owner, they made our journey ever more memorable. It may be a while for some folks are able to get back up there again as the road is in pretty rough shape but when it’s safe do give it a shot. See more..

5.0Longs Peak(65 reviews) - Through the keyhole.... Mountains
Unlike most people who summit longs, we decided to make it part of a backpacking trip. We spent the night before the summit in the boulder field, which was an awesome experience and I would highly recommend it! It was windy, but the sunrise was worth it.
The summit climb was fun, and once through the keyhole you are treated to awesome views of the mummy range. It is a decently strenuous climb, especially the middle section known as the trough. After an hour or so stay on the summit, we descended as it began it cloud up. We made it back to our tents just in time for a afternoon hail storm, which worked well as "rocks" in our victory scotches.See more..

5.0Mayflower Gulch(56 reviews) - Hiking with a remarkable view Mountains • Ski & Snowboard Areas
On my first visit to the area, my family planned on hiking this area. I loved how friendly the hikers were and how clean the trail appeared. I am not an experienced hiker nor am I athletic. We worked slowly up the hill to the top. The view was remarkable and breath taking. I saw several families with young children enjoying this hike. Once on top, we relaxed and took in the sites of what was left of cabins. We were able to sit together and rest before heading down. This experience was one of my favorite in the trip. See more..

5.0Mt. Bierstadt(54 reviews) - Loved this hike! Mountains
This hike is one of Colorado's 14ers, about 14,060 feet. We hiked it in early August, and it was my first 14er. Easy drive to the trailhead. There are two large parking lots, so if the first one you get to is full, just drive a little further down the road (1/4 mile), and you will see another large lot. Both parking lots have restrooms. People also park along the road between the two lots. Wear good hiking boots, bring plenty of snacks or sandwiches, and lots of water. I suggest trekking poles as well. Beautiful views. The trail was extremely easy to follow. Start early! We started at 5:00 am. Only the first mile of this is an easy trail. Then it gets continuously steeper and more rocky. Not easy, and not for children under 8 or 10. We saw very few kids on the trail. According to my Apple Watch, it was 8.5 miles round-trip. Recommended if you are looking for a challenge.See more..

4.5Emerald Mountain(42 reviews) - Fun multipurpose trail area Mountains
Only a 10-minute drive from Steamboat Springs Ski resort, we hiked here on days when the resort lift lines were too long. Hiking was fun (and challenging if you choose Lane of Payne or Root Canal trails!) and we enjoyed seeing the cross country skiiers, bikers, and snowshoers sharing the trails. Lots of people bring their dogs (mostly off leash but friendly). Free parking on the nearby streets.See more..

We were in Trinidad for a few days. We tried to drive up here many times, but each time the gate was locked. With no real information about how long the walk would be, we didn't. On our last day, we drove by one more time. Still the gate was locked. We had heard a story that the key holder was having reservations about unlocking the gate and hadn't opened it in a few weeks. It was decided we'd park and walk. While the gate is locked, there is a walking path through the gate and a sign indicating bike and walk path. The walk is about 1.25 miles and takes about 20 minute. There are a few places you walk a decent grade, but mostly its an easy walk.See more..
Bagged another 14er. I was only able to summit Democrat. Will be back another time to get Cameron, Lincoln, and Bross. Not bad for and old dude. Gettting to the false summit is tough with steep incline and lots of large rocks. For the most part you have to pick your own trail in this section. Make sure to take $3 for the parking area.See more..
The beginning of this hike will really let you know just how in or out of shape you are. It starts off very steep for maybe 1/2 to a mile-ish. After that it's much better, but seems like forever if you don't normally hike hills. The waterfall was nice, but small. Good place to eat lunch before heading back down.See more..
This is a serious 4WD road and shouldn’t be attempted if you think you’re going for a nice smooth ride in the mountains. No, there are no signs to warn you; you should do your homework before ascending a grade like this. The winters were too much even for the Colorado Midland, a standard gauge railroad (not narrow gauge) that ran in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. The train never ran over the pass but through nearby tunnels. It’s a great and beautiful journey but travelers should be prepared for both a bone-jarring ride and cooler temps. And no cell service except just below the eastern side of the summit for about 1/4 mile. See more..

Did Challenger point on July 23rd. It was a beast of a hike. We backpacked into the willow lake area - which is no joke either with almost 3,000 feet of elevation gain from the trailhead. And getting to the trailhead is pretty tame, but i wouldn't try it with a Prius. It took us almost 4 hours from the lake to the top of Challenger. We had planned on doing Kit Carson, but it's a 3-ish hour time commitment and the clouds were building, so we left it for another day. If we are going for both, i recommend you start the hike by 4:00 am to be safe. And camp by the lake. Otherwise, it is a brutally long day.See more..
4.5Spanish Peaks Wilderness(6 reviews) - Climbed both East and West Peaks Spent More than 3 hours Mountains
The Spanish Peaks get few visitors. Many of us who hike tend to focus on the 14ers. I've always marveled at these 2 peaks from a distance, so decided to give them a go. They are both class 1, but plenty steep. The last mile to the summit on both of them is a talus heap and very steep. The views from atop are awesome! I highly recommend, esps if you're looking for trails less followed.See more..

5.0Mt. Massive(4 reviews) - Floridian Female Takes on Massive Spent More than 3 hours Mountains
I hiked Massive solo on June 20, 2020. Being from Florida and only in Colorado for 3 days prior to my hike it was pretty difficult. I knew it would be difficult so I took diamox prior to the climb. The climb took me 10 hours! I took plenty of water 3.75 L and snacks because I knew it would take me all day to complete the 14 mile hike. It was beautiful and the scramble along the ridge was fun. There was snow to wade through and slide in. I wouldn’t make this your first fourteener. I did Elbert last year and I think they are pretty comparable. Elbert is less mileage but same elevation gain so in some ways it was more difficult. Get an early start just before sunrise and be prepared to have to walk a little bit from the overflow trailhead parking. The sense of accomplishment is worth the struggle to the top. See more..

5.0James Peak Wilderness Area Trails(2 reviews) - Awesome hiking Spent More than 3 hours Mountains • Nature & Wildlife Areas • Hiking Trails
Trail through the St. Mary Lake and St. Mary Glacier was very colorful and not very easy. It was worth to hike there, to be able to get to the great open space near the peaks. The temperature in the end of September was about 45 F. There was very strong wind and beautiful sunny day. The views were unbelievable. I was hoping to see more wild life(except the bears or mountain lion :) ). Finally I saw some birds and one marmot, sitting on the rock and "checking the hikers". Picnic at the top hidden behind the bush was great. The food has tasted better and even water was good too. You can hike in many directions there. I wish to have more time. It looks like I will be returning back to this place. There is still a lot of things to see. I recommend this place. RomanPSee more..
