  1. 4.0 Granite Peak (315 reviews)
    - Remains the only place I'll ski in Wisconsin
    Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Granite Peak image
With the biggest vertical drop, best chair lift system and most trails of any ski hill I can drive to, Granite Peak remains the only place I ski in Wisconsin. I get season passes and they pay for themself in 6 or 7 days of skiing and saves a lot of hassle with not having to deal with lines at the ticket window. They have some challenging terrain including a few mogul runs - runs are much shorter than out West or even the larger resorts on the East Coast (such as Killington) but it is the closest thing to that experience in the Midwest (with the possible exception of Lutsen in Minnesota which I've never been to as it is a much farther drive). - Skiing and tubing not to be missed!

We wanted to get our 3 year old on skis. It cost us $15 for everything, including a helmet and an hour lesson. Kerry is the best ski instructor I have ever met. He is so knowledgeable, friendly and clearly loves what he does. My 3 year old was skiing by himself after 3 runs. Kerry is amazing for kids and adults! Do yourself a favor and find him! He just wants everyone to enjoy skiing or snowboarding and is willing to help anyone!! The tubing hill was fast. Fun. But fast. I took my 3 year old and 1 1/2 year old. Wow. Definitely a lot of fun. A little expensive on the weekends. We lucked out going during the week. It also wasn’t super busy, so we took our time and I felt safe with there not being g a ton of people on the hill. Find Kerry! You won’t regret it! See more..
  3. 4.0 Cascade Mountain (211 reviews)
    - Wonderful Midwest Experience

    Cascade Mountain image
This year we chose to go to Cascade Mountain instead of Colorado for skiing, and I'm extremely glad we did! This place is especially great for less experienced skiers/riders (us - mostly greens with a few blues). We skied probably ten hours total and probably only did 1/3rd to 1/2 of the runs green and blue runs. The two dedicated beginner lifts really help ease the lift lines for the more advanced runs. The slopes weren't busy at all during the Monday and Wednesday we were there. All of the staff were very friendly and I really appreciated the help from Ashleigh and Michael in the learning center. Kyle in the tech shop adjusted the kids skies and my board and provided a lot of time explaining how the adjustments would impact our experience. Both my kids and I were wanting to go back the instant we got home. See more..

We enjoyed our visit to MWP so much that we came back a second day. The staff are extremely helpful and patient with newbies and really want you to enjoy your time at the park. We scheduled a group lesson which was very informative and the instructors took time with everyone. The tea house is a great stop for some hot chocolate or tea. The camp fires and benches are appreciated to pause and enjoy nature and some gorgeous views. It is truly a hidden gem! See more..

    Wilmot Mountain image
Since 1938, Wilmot Mountain has enchanted families as one of the Midwest’s premier Winter destinations for snowsport activities. Just a short drive away from Chicago and Milwaukee, they have made skiing, snowboarding, and tubing an easy, accessible, affordable and fun trip for the whole family. With the recent Vail Purchase, Wilmot Mountain is undergoing a $13.2 million renovation. This renovation includes new lifts, a base area transformation, an expanded state-of-the-art snowmaking system, a new kid's ski and snowboard school with an enhanced beginner's area, and a new terrain park with high speed rope tow. Having converted thousands of first-timers into lifelong skiers and riders, and now with the opportunity to take that passion to Vail Resorts’ iconic western mountains, Wilmot Mountain is truly the place where Epic begins. 7. 3.5 Alpine Valley Resort (59 reviews)
    - Great local ski area with fair prices

    Alpine Valley Resort image
Good variety of runs. Probably best for mid-level skiers. Fairly cheap weekend rates for lift tickets and rentals. Easy parking, $6 for a good beer. 90ish minutes from Chicago. Staff was helpful, crowds were light and friendly. They have ski-in rooms that are right on the hill. It is much more scenic than local tiny spots like Wilmot. We had a lucky day of fresh snow and no ice. We got what we paid for and I'll go back for certain. See more..
  8. 3.5 Sunburst Ski Area (57 reviews)
    - Tubing during Christmas Break
Monday: 4:00 PM - 9:30 PM Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Sunburst Ski Area image
We went tubing the Monday after Christmas with another family. The kids were aged 9-15. Everyone had a great time. It was not busy when we went just before lunch. There was no snow in southern Wisconsin which may have kept customers away. The ski and tubing runs had snow. The first set of tubing runs was open and they were actively making snow for the other runs. The runs were average speed this time and they allowed up to 5 riders to run at the same time. Employees at the end of the runs were doing a decent job watching out for collisions. See more..

I ski/snowboard here annually with my son. We look forward to going every year. We have purchased an annual pass the last three seasons. During Covid it was one of things that we looked forward to most. Great father and son time. The runs, although short, offer enough variety to keep us entertained. It's a great place to go as a family. Over the past couple of years they have continued to update the facility with improved snow making machines, improved food selections etc. See more..

Nordic Mountain online tickets are easy to obtain and cheap compared to other mountains in the area. Lesson that was scheduled for my grandson was a bit of a disappointment. Probably miscommunication on my part. But what happened afterward more than made the trip worthwhile. I continued to ski on the Bunny Hill, encouraging him to join me. But he was "done'. That's when Melinda and Bob stepped in and said "show us what you got" (paraphrasing). And out came a skier! I cannot thank them enough for their enthusiasm and genuine kindness. He had a second lesson (this time with Bob - who also gave me some tips) and was smiles the rest of the day! THANK YOU!!!!!!! WE WILL BE BACK! See more..
  16. 3.5 Camp 10 Ski Area (8 reviews)
    - A fun family ski hill
    Ski & Snowboard Areas
    Camp 10 Ski Area image
I have heard about Camp 10 for years but never really skied there until this year. It is not a huge hill but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in atmosphere. This is a laid-back hill where people go to teach their kids to ski or just have a fun day on the slopes. Everyone is friendly and tries their best to make sure you have a great day. It is run on a budget and does not have the glitz of bigger hills. Instead, it is a place where parents can feel comfortable letting their kids wander while they bask in the sun in the lodge. There is enough diversity to keep things interesting with a mix of powder runs, groomed hills, some terrain for snowboarders or adventurous skiers, and a number of trails. It is conveniently located in Rhinelander's backyard and much cheaper than Granite Peak. They also have a great deal on season passes. Could it use some sprucing up? Yes, but I know we will be season pass holders for as long as they will have us. See more..

hoot! This is a 4,000 person party with an occasional human flying by! I had a blast at “the jumps”! This was my first ski-jump event—EVER! Boy, was I in for an experience! I took my son, his wife and their two grade-school-age girls. They were all amazed at all the things there was to do there! The kids had a money-spiked snow pile to paw through. They rode their sleds down a short hill. They also watched guys ski-jumping on the huge hill. There are horse-drawn sled rides there but we didn’t do that. (Maybe next year.) There is good food and drinks there of all types. It is not “gotcha”priced! Very reasonable. The people (volunteers) of Westby put on one whale of an event! If you haven’t gone before, the only question I have is, WHY? I hope to see YOU next year! See more..
