The most beautiful cave in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest, Cave of the Mounds lies just off U.S. Highways 18/151 in Blue Mounds, WI. The United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service designated Cave of the Mounds a National Natural Landmark because the site possesses "exceptional value as an illustration of the nation's natural heritage and contributes to a better understanding of man's environment". Curious tourists and budding cave enthusiasts have been enjoying an introduction to caving in the midwest for years while visiting Cave of the Mounds. Commonly referred to as the "jewel box" of America's major caves for the variety and delicacy of its formations, Cave of the Mounds is recognized by the Chicago Academy of Sciences as "the significant cave of the upper Midwest". Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Ice Caves image
The caves are beautiful in the Summer, but about every third Winter they are spectacular. A few years ago tens of thousands of people came here. It is definitely worth a long trip. Also about February the lake freezes and you can drive over the ice to Madelaine Island. The locals contribute their Christmas Trees that mark the route. See more..

I like stopping at this park whenever in the area, just to hike its trails. The park is situated on the Niagara Escarpment - a dolomite wall that is a leftover of the ancient sea shore. It's always cool next to the wall - even on the hottest days. I am yet to time my visit to get into the caves, since the access is ran by volunteer group and is very limited - something to look forward to. See more..
  6. 4.5 Eagle Cave (19 reviews)
    - Staff Can’t Be Beat
    Caverns & Caves
    Eagle Cave image
Planning a trip is hard in 2020 when you want to be safe. Having resources together is harder. Eagle Cave solved all of that for us. They adjusted our campsite for us because we had more hammocks than planned- no complaints, no issues, and they seemed genuinely happy to help us. We went on the canoes and had a great time. They know the area well and dropped us off with plenty of direction, at a price that cannot be beat. We had privacy, we had supplies, and we had a good time. My only regret is we didn’t stay long enough to visit the grounds’ namesake cave. Maybe next year. See more..
  7. 4.5 Ice Caves (12 reviews)
    - Put this on your list of things to do (weather permitting of course!)
Spent More than 3 hours Caverns & Caves
    Ice Caves image
If it gets cold enough to freeze over this area of Lake Superior so that you can walk on the ice and into the Ice Caves, be sure to take the walk. We last went in March of 2014 (this form only allows us to list our visit as one year ago btw) during a particularly cold winter, and although the walk from the parking lot to the caves is about a mile (a guess), it was worth it. Truly a wonder to behold and highly recommended. See more..
  8. 5.0 Pier Natural Bridge Park (2 reviews)
    - Very interesting geological feature
Caverns & Caves • Parks • Geologic Formations
    Pier Natural Bridge Park image
While larger geological formations in this part of the state are well-known (like Mill Bluff State Park, or Natural Bridge State Park), there are small gems hiding in the woods here and there. This one has a small stream flowing under the spot where two cliffs touch each other above the surface of the water. It also has a tunnel drilled through the sandstone rock, and a trail that goes at the bottom and top of the rock. It's also a great spot for the picnic. See more..
