    Taliesin Preservation, Inc. image
Taliesin, the home, studio and estate of Frank Lloyd Wright, is located in the Driftless Region of southwestern Wisconsin near Spring Green. It is the name of Wright’s house as well as the 800-acre estate that includes buildings from all decades of Wright’s career. Its many wings and terraces reach out around the ridge of the hill, embracing the site and standing as “brow.” Taliesin was the residence of Wright and the valley was his inspiration and life-long laboratory for architectural designs and innovation. Taliesin represents the most complete embodiment of Wright’s philosophy of Organic Architecture. The Taliesin residence is the heart of a series of buildings that Wright designed for himself and his family members on the estate. Other buildings include: Romeo & Juliet Windmill (1896), Hillside Home School (1903), Tan-y-Deri (1908), Hillside Drafting Studio (1932), Midway Barn (1949), Hillside Theater (1952), and the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center (1967). - Retirement Trek

    Wingspread image
This was a very, very nice tour. started out with a nice video of the original family that called the place home talking about the house, then something that rarely happens at a Frank Lloyd Wright structure, you were free to explore the house on your own, to take your time and really absorb and photograph everything you want. Granted, some of the building are off-limits because it is after all the Johnson Wax retreat and a working office. One of the better tours of Wright properties I've been on. I would highly recommend this to anyone, even a non-Wright fan. I was there on a rainy day so I didn't get a chance to walk the grounds, lots of sculptures, and what looked like a nice walking trail that would have been nice to explore. See more..
  9. 4.5 St. Joan of Arc Chapel (163 reviews)
    - Beautiful and Serene
    Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites
St. Joan of Arc Chapel image
We had to wait a bit before exploring since a number of students in graduation gowns were using the outside of the chapel for photo shoots. This small chapel was located on the Marquette University campus near the library. It faced beautiful gardens and in the back was a recent installation of a grotto dedicated to St. Mary. Inside was quite small with an old world feeling. Beautiful stained glass windows and simple decor made this very serene inside. See more..

    - Excellent Museum
Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • History Museums • Day Trips
    Oshkosh Public Museum image
This is a great museum. It’s across the street from the Paine, so was super easy to get to after viewing the Nutcracker exhibit. It’s in the beautiful Sawyer Family Victorian mansion. One fun activity is spying all of the Tiffany design elements in the mansion. There’s a comprehensive exhibit of Native American artifacts, including many spearheads, axe heads, arrow tips, clay pots, and other items. There’s also a simulated dig site, a birch lodge, and a birchbark canoe. The signs give a great overview of Native American civilization over the millennia right here in Wisconsin. We stuck around to watch the Apostle clock chime the hour. What a fascinating piece of craftsmanship, I definitely recommend seeing it. Another fun thing to do is check out Grannie’s attic, a fun hodge-podge of old treasures that’s sure to bring back memories. See more..

I was visiting friends in Oconomowoc, WI and one day drove over to Watertown. I always do this when visiting. After I made my meat and cheese run to Glenn's meat market I saw the sign for the Octagon house. I didn't take the tour but did get some nice pix of which I'll post a couple. The Waelderhaus image
Situated among the trees on a high bluff overlooking the winding Sheboygan River, The Waelderhaus stands as a tribute to the tradition of Bregenzerwald Province of Vorarlberg, Austria. This picturesque mountain valley on the western border of Austria was the ancestral homeland of the Kohler family. Located in Kohler, Wisconsin, Waelderhaus, or "a house in the woods," is a tribute to the architecture specific to this Alpine area. The interior is replete with rich carvings, wrought-iron craftsmanship and stained glass. Kaspar Albrecht, a talented sculptor and architect, spent two years designing and directing the building of The Waelderhaus. He also created the carvings, woodcuts, reliefs, and iron and pewter work that enhance the building, and personally designed and supervised all phases of decor. Guided tours offered daily at 2, 3, and 4 pm. Closed holidays. See more..
  16. 4.5 Seth Peterson Cottage (30 reviews)
    - won't disappoint
    Architectural Buildings
    Seth Peterson Cottage image
Can't believe I was fortunate enough to be in the area the one day of the month the cottage is open for tours. Definitely worth the stop. There were a steady stream of visitors as you have little opportunity to visit. Tours begin every few minutes. A mini Frank Lloyd Wright creation, with no detail left undone as Wright is famous for. Even had piano hinges on closet doors. Loved the chains on the rain downspouts. It is available for rentals but usually booked out 2 years in advance. I don't know if it would be practical to rent, as there are no curtains and with walls of glass not very private. I would imagine lots of people would be constantly wandering by just to get a peek at the place. Beautiful location too. It's too bad the state won't allow the trees to be trimmed. Could have an amazing view of the lake. See more..

    A.D. German Warehouse image
The Warehouse is located in the community of Richland Center, FLW's birthplace. It's an unusual example of early Wright design, not to missed by architectural enthusiasts. (Couple your visit with a tour of the town's many excellent preserved design masterpieces.)
