4.5Technik Museum Speyer(1.244 reviews) - Make A Detour to a Special Place Sunday: 9:00 AM - 7:00 PM Speciality Museums
On recommendation from a friend, we made a special detour of our trip along the Rhine to visit this museum. On first impression, it was very impressive with the outdoor exhibits of jets, trains and a submarine that were invitingly set up to climb aboard and explore. There are several buildings to investigate with every category of vehicle you could ever imagine on display in a well represented fashion. We only gave ourselves 2 hours to see it all, as we thought that should be enough, but it was a whirlwind tour and it became clear you could spend days there reading everything there was available to read about each vehicle. We bought the companion book that has the information of each important vehicle there to read later. There is also a second location, 10 minutes away by car, where even more vehicles can be found! Before we left we bought a t-shirt and ate well at the large café. I have recommended the Speyer Museum to friends and family since our visit and hope to someday return.See more..
4.5Gutenberg Museum(967 reviews) - Well worthwhile Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • History Museums

This is really small museum (only one room) with 30 minutes guided tour in German with English flyer and its store twice size bigger. Cost 2.50 euros per person, open daily 10am - 6 pm. But... you will see is one of the oldest mustard's mills (c.1810) of its kind still operating in Europe. They produce outstanding mustards, using only natural spices and following selected and historical recipes. In store (which attached to the museum room) you can try approx. 15 kinds of mustards (testing is free). You like a mustard with plum, honey, apple, etc? Welcome to buy! We chose a 15th century recipe for a mustard with garlic. And the secret shared with us by the store employee - after opening a jar of mustard, it doesn't need to be put in the fridge and it has a shelf life of 2 years !!See more..

4.5Dokumentationsstatte Regierungsbunker(312 reviews) - A relict of the cold war Sunday: 10:00 AM - 4:30 PM Speciality Museums • Points of Interest & Landmarks
As I am very fond of bunkers and have already seen the east-german counterpart I was very excited to see this piece of history myself. The exhibited parts consist of the first 200m of a former train tunnel which was later used as a federal bunker. The doors are quiete impressive and the security measurements taken are amazing. We got to see the equipment used to provide a safe environment for about 3000 people starting with food and health care to bedrooms and laboratories to test the water quality. Unfortunately all exhibits are drawn together and set up in places that are not the orginial places. This is the only drawback in this bunker experience eversthings else was quiete interesting. The entrance fee for an adult was 10 Euros and the photo permisson was another 2,50 Euros. Make sure to take warm clothes with you even on a hot summers day! It was worth a visit even though I had expected more.See more..
People have told us not to bother visiting this important WWII site because “there is nothing there.” We chose to ignore the advice and were glad we did. There is an enormous piece of the bridge on both sides of the Rhine River. There is also a Peace Museum that is closed in order to bring it into the 21st Century with new technology. An American flag flies proudly from the top of the bridge. It’s a great place to sit and contemplate what happened here and to see how peaceful a place it is now with the boats going by on the river. Parking is available a little ways up the road from the Bridge and is free. There are no other facilities at this site at the present time.See more..

4.5The Museum of Ancient Shipbuilding(167 reviews) - Kid-friendly day out in Mainz! Temporarily closed - Closed until further notice Speciality Museums
Wonderful museum! The staff is very helpful and there are many displays/exhibits. The museum was free to visit, which is a bonus. Parking can be found across the street and was about 3 Euros for the amount of time I spent in the museum. I recommend visiting during the week to avoid crowds. It is kid-friendly and had many areas for children to color ship-themed coloring pages, create crafts and listen to audio guides. If you have an iPhone, they also have an app you can scan a QR code to learn additional information.See more..

4.5Arp Museum(118 reviews) - Very well designed museum Sunday: 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM Speciality Museums • Art Museums
Excellent museum! The nicest way to go there is to take the ferry from the opposite side of the Rhine coming from Konigswinter. Free parking space. The railway station (still in use) has the old museum building with a tunnel and impressive climb to the higher level of the new building by Richard Meier. Very clear, vast spaces, excellent displays, very well designed. Also, the art is coherent. Of course the work of Arp and Salvador Dali (also in the old building) but at the time of our visit there were tow fitting exhibitions, about dreams and visions (paintings and art form the Rau-Unicef collection) and large apocalyptic paintings by Jonas Burgert. They fitted in excellently with the Dada/Surrealist art. If you go from the old to the new building, leave the elevator and take the stairs. They are surrounded by fascinating use of concrete, for example decorative pillars, which are an art experience in themselves. This is how a museum visit should be.See more..
4.5Buddha Museum(118 reviews) - Buddha Heaven Sunday: 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Speciality Museums
Certainly the most enchanting Museum I've ever been to, located in the beautiful Moselle valley town of Traben-Trarbach. 4000 Buddhas from various cultures & countries, displayed superbly in a grand, castle-like setting beside the river, we indulged ourselves for four hours until closing time. Just go and see for yourself, it's a treat for lovers of the Buddha in all forms and sizes, and for those who long for some stillness and perhaps inspiration to live a more peaceful life! There is also a wonderful roof garden. We certainly had four very peaceful and reflective /introspective hours!See more..

4.5Lava Dome(95 reviews) - Fascinating place Sunday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Speciality Museums
Really lovely interactive museum. Our tour guide had organised an enthusiastic and knowledgeable English speaking guide for the underground tour. Our group had fun on this part of the trip learning all sorts of geological detail and about rivalries in beer brewing. Our guide was prominent in the geological field and he showed us one of the machines he had been involved in with regard to the chemical composition of various rocks. The demonstration of the formation of maars is suitable for all and was enjoyableSee more..
The Hermeskeil Museum is only known to connaisseurs, and it is a little bit far off the normal tourists track. For aviation afficionados, it is heaven, as there is quite an interesting mix of Eastern and Western aircraft (civilian and miliatry) assembled in this place. And they are all exposed to the elements (with very few exceptions such as the Ju-52). Another dream fulfilled after having visited several aviation sites in southern Bavaria and Speyer am Rhein. There are many more planes of interest. Many moons ago, my first flight (early 1969) was in a LH Vickers Viscount (and since then, I have been on most of the LH aircraft types from B707, B 727, B737, B747 to various Airbus types). The best is still the A380.See more..
3.0Nibelungenmuseum(88 reviews) - Very Educational and Entertaining Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums
After reading some of the tripadvisor reviews I wasn't expecting much from the Nibelungen Museum, but I walked away wishing I had more time to finish the entire tour before I had to catch my train. The audio guide, which comes in English, is very good. The narrator explains the saga in an entertaining way and explains the history behind the story. I went in knowing very little about the saga and left the museum with a good understanding of the story and the history behind it. For the price, the museum is fair value and is a great day out for history lovers. I would also say it's very family friendly too.See more..
4.0Stadtmuseum Simeonstift(77 reviews) - Varied and interesting Sunday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Historic Sites • Art Museums
The City Museum Simeonstift in Trier shows art and cultural treasures from the Middle Ages to well into the 21th century. The exhibition is founded on a collection of valuable donations made by well-known citizens of the city. The artefacts on display are divided into a variety of sections, including paintings, sculptures, arts and crafts, Coptic textiles, furniture and small Oriental plastic art forms. The focal point of the permanent exhibition revolves around the history of the city of Trier. Regularly changing special exhibitions are dedicated to Trier’s native artists or to topics associated with the city. The collection is housed in the Roman building of the Collegiate of St. Simeon, which originates from the 11th century and is directly adjacent to the Porta Nigra. Also worthy of note is the building itself, which boasts one of the oldest and rarely preserved two-storey cloisters. The admission price includes an audio guide (D/E/F/NL), also available as an audio guided tour for children (D).See more..
4.5Ehrenburg Castle(70 reviews) - Second stay was as excellent as the first Speciality Museums
This was our second stay and we loved it again. The entire ambiance of walking around the castle grounds at our leisure was magical. The room was clean and spacious and the silence at night was amazing . We ate dinner that evening and the 3 course meal was excellent! Plenty of good wine and beer was available and enjoyed. It was a little chilly after sunset but the staff built a fire in a pit in the courtyard and it made one dream of days of old. Breakfast was excellent as well with a large selection meat, cheese, breads, and yogurts. We will be back for thirds for sure!!See more..

4.0RingWerk(63 reviews) - Interesting and interactive museum Spent More than 3 hours Speciality Museums
Visited with two children aged 6 and 9. Plenty to see and do with a wide range of displays and interactive exhibits. These run to a timetable so it's easy to plan the day and include a F1 pitstop challenge (the children loved changing the wheels), children's electric go-kart track, giant scale electrix, truck race sim and F1 sim. There are also two 4d shows which we really enjoyed and a soft play area. As well as the organised activities the static displays are really interesting and include a number of DTM, F1 and other racing cars of note. There was enough English for us to get by. Overall it was a well balanced and fun museum keeping the children interested but having some motor racing depth as well.See more..
4.0DB Museum Koblenz(57 reviews) - Interesting exhibits, well worth visiting, needs investment Speciality Museums
This museum is tucked away in a suburb of Koblenz, on an hourly bus route from the main railway station. Interesting exhibits include dining and sleeping cars from a previous era, early electric locomotives and a collection of steam locomotives. You have full access to many exhibits - more so than at the British equivalent at York. Much stock is not yet open, however; the signposting to the museum from the bus stop is poor and there is no cafe, nor information other than in German. Open only on Saturdays in winter. Will be brilliant and a major attraction when it has more funding.See more..

4.5Whisky-Museum Kyrburg(47 reviews) - Awesome birthday surprise Sunday: 11:00 AM - 12:00 AM Speciality Museums
Yes, there is a world-class whisky museum located in central Germany. Amazing setting that is tucked into the historic Kyrburg castle ruins. We had a group of about 12 adults. Great food and a really informative tasting. When they heard it was my birthday, they poured me a glass of whisky from my birth year. Pretty amazing. If you coordinate with them in advance and have a big enough party, he can do the entire presentation in English or at least come over to your table and give you some information in English if you have a smaller group. From the location, to the food, to the whisky to the people, it was a great experience.See more..

4.5Deutsches Schuhmuseum(44 reviews) - A great stop after shoe shopping nearby Speciality Museums
I was told to check out Schuhmeile because the assortment of quality shoes in one place is amazing. Afterwards, I had looked up the German shoe museum to explore on my own- only about a mile down the street. For 7 euros I got an English audio guide to follow along through the 4 floors of exhibits! The top floor had a sports related exhibit- probably due to the Rio Summer Olympics. I thought it was well done- covering the historical impact of the shoe manufacturing business in the area and worldwide. Glad I stopped in, but I wouldn't make a far journey here unless shoes are really your "thing".See more..

The current opening hours can be found on our homepage. It is also possible to visit the cat museum on other days by appointment with phone or e-mail. Here are a few remarks to prevent misunderstandings: Sorry, the available rooms are not accessible to disabled guests. There are several steps to cope with and the walkways are cramped. Therefore it is unfortunately not possible to visit the exhibition with a baby carriage too. And please do not bring any other animals into the exhibition with regard to the siamese ball lightning of the house. Thank you for your understanding ♥See more..

4.0Westwall Museum(25 reviews) - Perfect for WWII Buffs Speciality Museums
I'm a huge history fan, and this place was right up my alley! The bunker was a real German WW2 station on the Siegfried Line for SS panzer troops. The self-guided tour shows heavy equipment, guns, tanks, model displays, uniforms, etc... The bunker was much larger than I expected. Our wives found it extremely boring, but the guys loved it. The admission was 5 Euro. A detailed guided tour is available for an additional fee, but it's in German.See more..
5.0Industrial Monument Jakob Bengel(25 reviews) - very interesting industrial museum Sunday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
The industrial heritage monument Jakob Bengel is the only authentic manufacturing plant with company flats and an industrialist mansion, which embodies the over 130 year industrial history of the city of Idar-Oberstein. In the district of Oberstein, situated below the city theatre, the Bengel company, which employed 100 people during the golden age, offers guided tours through the factory. Insights are given into the chain-, jewellery-, and accessory production with diverse technologies and numerous self developed tools. The partly antique machinery and old production processes indicate the creative power of the trade (jewellery design, engraving and the building of tools), which in the era of controlled mechanics set the prerequisites for a successful jewellery production. Since 2003 the Art Deco jewellery of Jakob Bengel of the 20’s and 30’s, is reproduced according to their own pattern books with the original tools and in the same production method in limited editions for specialSee more..

You'd need to know this museum was there, as you'd never stumble across it. Commemorating Blucher's crossing on the Rhine in the Napoleonic Wars, it has a decent mix of historic sweep and minutiae - uniforms, badges, guns, other weaponry, odd documents, personal effects. It is small, quiet (no-one else appeared while I was there) but gripping. Worth a stop as you race up or down the Rhine, and Kaub has an excellent ferry service from the West Bank of the river.See more..
