A relict of the cold war

As I am very fond of bunkers and have already seen the east-german counterpart I was very excited to see this piece of history myself. The exhibited parts consist of the first 200m of a former train tunnel which was later used as a federal bunker. The doors are quiete impressive and the security measurements taken are amazing. We got to see the equipment used to provide a safe environment for about 3000 people starting with food and health care to bedrooms and laboratories to test the water quality. Unfortunately all exhibits are drawn together and set up in places that are not the orginial places. This is the only drawback in this bunker experience eversthings else was quiete interesting. The entrance fee for an adult was 10 Euros and the photo permisson was another 2,50 Euros. Make sure to take warm clothes with you even on a hot summers day! It was worth a visit even though I had expected more.

A relic from the cold war era!
If you rely on Google Maps to guide you to this place of interest, you will be quite misguided into a dead end and won't find the official parking lot. About 200m before you reach your destination you should drive straight ahead and not left as Google suggests. It is better to mark the parking place in the aerial view, then you will find the destination easier. We visited this sight shortly after the Corona shutdown, so the guided group of visitors was limited and consisted of only 5 persons. This is of course ideal. It should be pointed out that a visit is only useful with an appointment by phone in advance to avoid disappointment. First of all it should be noted that the staff is very friendly and helpful in every respect. The tour lasts 90 minutes and you can only see about 200m of the huge tunnel system of the government bunker. The rest of the site is not accessible. And this is a little bit disappointing, as many facilities and rooms are mostly presented with the original objects, but not at the place where they originally were. Some rooms, e.g. the technical communication room, have been equipped with similar devices that were used at that time, but they were not the original devices. Through the comments of the guide, the exhibited pictures and text material and through the relatively small accessible section of the bunker you get a slight impression of the life in a nuclear safe bunker, which guaranteed survival for 30 days. One should plan to visit also other sights nearby, as especially a long drive only for the bunker is not really worthwhile.

    Cold War Era Bunker
Most people have already forgotten that there was a Cold War until almost 40 years ago. Visiting this museum is a great way to understand that era. The museum is a small preserved part of the West German government bunker that had been built to ensure government continuity in the event of an all out war. Touring the facility shows the level of preparation, planning, and implementation that had to be undertaken to achieve this objective. It is a very interesting museum, and the guides were very good. Take the German language tour, if you speak German, since they provide more background information.
