Pretty, and easy to find: right in the middle of the old market square. I imagine it’s hard to take pictures of it without dozens of people in the frame during the summer, but we were there in early March so it wasn’t crowded at all. We also used this as a meeting spot in the afternoon, when our party split up to do different things. See more..
  3. 3.5 Martinsbrunnen (51 reviews)
    - Fountain with an interesting story

    Martinsbrunnen image
The current bronze statue of Saint Martin on horseback, sharing his cloak with a beggar, on the central column of a fountain is by Anton Nagel. The first Market Fountain, erected in 1459, contained a statue of St. Martin, the patron saint of Cochem. It was demolished and replaced it in 1863 with a new cast-iron fountain decorated with two lanterns, and a terracotta figure of St. Martin on top. The fountain was, again, replaced in 1906, but the terracotta figure stayed until 1935 when it was replaced with the present statue. See more..

  13. 4.0 Geissbockbrunnen (3 reviews)
    - Local tradition, fun for pictures
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Fountains
For more than 600 years on the Tuesday after Pentecost, the neighboring town of Lambrecht has delivered a geissbock (“billy goat”) to Deidesheim as payment for grazing rights in a forested area of town. Over time, this contractual obligation evolved into a festival in which the youngest married couple from Lambrecht, followed by a procession of townspeople, leads a goat to Deidesheim to be auctioned to the highest bidder. But not just any goat will do! The centuries-old contract stipulates that the goat be “well-horned and well-endowed” (presumably for breeding purposes). Part of the comedic drama of this annual tradition is a lively debate over the – ahem – qualities of the goat. At exactly 5:45pm, a spirited auction begins with the goat going to highest bidder when the church bell strikes 6. Winning bids can be considerable – going as high as 4,444 Euros (=$5,332.49)! Celebrating this tradition is a fountain (geissbockbrunnen) on the way into town from the train station. A billy goat looks down on step-in figures of the traditional dress worn by the couple from Lambrecht, making a great photo opportunity. See more..

    Karlsbader Brunnen image
This is a very interesting fountain sculpture shows a puzzling two-faced figure on a column. This bronze sculpture is supposed to represent "eternal life". A woman's face on one side is awake, has open eyes and represents the DAY. Back to back to it is a male face with closed eyes representing the NIGHT. And that is not all! On top of the heads there is a plate with fruit (biblical apples?) and two snakes. It reads that the fountain was created by Jan Kotek, Czech sculptor from Karlovy Vary. You should see this fountain! - the fountain sculpture about the 14th century medicinal wine story.
    Spent < 1 hour Monuments & Statues • Fountains
This cast iron fountain sculpture has a shape of a column but how elaborate and beautiful! It is overflowing with vines and clusters of grapes. The sides depict the 14th century tale about the medicinal properties of local wine. Bohemond of Saarbrücken was the Archbishop of Trier (as Bohemond II) and a Prince Elector of the Holy Roman Empire . He apparently got deathly sick but local wine with medicinal properties cured him! Since then it has been called the Doctor Wine. "Bernkasteler Doctor" . This interesting fountain sculpture was created by a German artist Johann Baptist Lenz. See more..
