- 4.5 Burg Rheinfels (85 reviews)
-Awesome visit!
Sunday: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Ancient Ruins • Castles
The most powerful landmark of St. Goar is Rheinfels Castle. It is the largest and one of the most magnificent castle ruins on the Rhine - equally important for the castle architecture of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen in the 14th century as well as for the castle and fortress construction of the 16th to 18th century Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel. Immerse yourself in the Middle Ages, explore fortifications, towering towers and halls and passageways cut into the rock. See more..

Ancient Ruins
Since Boppard used to be an important settlement for the Romans on the Middle Rhine, they built a fortification here in the 4th century. The impressive fort was built near the Rhine, the remains can now still be visited. Entrance is free. See more..

-Pretty spot
Sunday: 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Ancient Ruins • Castles
The Niederburg castle is actually a ruin but worth a visit. It‘s very affordable and very interesting to walk within the walls and around the remains of the ancient castle. It does tell its own story. Quite romantic to be honest. See more..

-Romantic
Ancient Ruins
There is not much left from the old castle but what remains is very romantic and photogenic and it offers amazing view to the Idar-Oberstein town. It is very well worth a visit and either combine with hiking on Nahe - Felsen - Weg or visiting nearby castle Oberstein and Felsenkirche. Or both like I did. See more..
- 5.0 Klosterruine Disibodenberg (Hildegard von Bingen) (28 reviews)
-Majestic, mystical and amust see
Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Architectural Buildings
2,5 ha. As its entrace is via a ticketautomat one needs to have 3 Euro per person. For wheelchair one needs to call a telephonenumber which is mentioned at the automat to open the side entrance. Would not advice as one can push a wheelchair upwards the mountain, but once at the ruins a wheelchai is stuch as the ruins are divided by many steps and small stairs. At the entrance is a small museum which was closed when we visited (though opening times were referred to as open). The ruins of the Benedictine monastery Hildegard von Bingen date back to 1108, until 1780 most of the buildings still stood upright. Remains of the complex were used as stone rubble or to buildingmatirial for houses in surounding municipalities. 1842-1844 ownership by Peter Wannemann ,who dug most of the ruin remains free. -Stunning view
Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Castles
This is the perfect place to sit snd recover after a long hike across the hills of the Pfälzer Wald. Drink a wheat beer and eat traditional Palatinate liver dumplings and enjoy the magnificent view across the entire Vorderpfalz all the way to the Black Forest some 40 km east. If you have parked your car at the bottom of the Villa Ludwigshöhe you should take the chairlift, which again offers a great view. See more..

- 4.0 Burg Baldenau (10 reviews)
-Somewhat hidden
Ancient Ruins
Worthwhile the B-turn. 1324 Built by Archbishop Baldwin in connection with the Schmidtburger feud and named after him. (the sole moated castle in the district). In the 14th century the Sponheim counts dominated the District and they had to face an impressive opponent: Baldwin Luxembourg, Elector and Archbishop of Trier (1285-1354). He was the brother of the Emperor Henry VII. And very influential. Whenever a regional areal Elector felt threatened by Baldwin the Archbishop set him a castle on his virtual doorstep: Baldenau, Balduinseck or also Balduinstein. Baldenau is so strategically located in the Drohntal that he could optimally monitor connections from Bernkastel to Schmidt Castle and Oberstein, as well as the road from Mainz to Trier. See more..
- 5.0 Burg Neuleiningen (10 reviews)
-Old Times, long ago, great memories
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins
Sixty years ago (1959-1961) I spent two years at a USAF missile launch site on top of Grunstadterberg, overlooking Schloss Neuleiningen. Thus, I drove right past the old castle twice a day, to and from the site, AND NEVER DID VISIT "our" local castle. Too close, I guess, like New Yorkers never getting to the Empire State Building. As a bachelor, I kept going to places like Rome, Paris, London, Copenhagen ...and the Riviera, three times. But in retrospect, the Grunstadt-"wine strasse", Neuleiningen area area is fascinating; See more..
- 3.5 Kloster Rosenthal (7 reviews)
-Well preserved ruins
Spent < 1 hour Ancient Ruins • Churches & Cathedrals
Ruins of Monastery Rosenthal are well preserved and very picturesque. There are plenty of roses plants around and on the walls so I suppose it looks amazing in summer when they are blooming. The place is freely accessible. There was a sign telling the entrance fee is 1 EUR, but I didn't find any place or cashbox to pay. As there is nothing else to see around I recommend to combine the visit with little hiking. I walked form Ramsen cemetery, headed to Stauf where I found little castle ruins and then followed marking "W" up to Kerzenheim. It was about 4 km (one way) not too difficult enjoyable hike.
Spent 1-2 hours Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings

-High amidst vineyards
Ancient Ruins
We made an attempt to visit by car, but had to quit halfway... It is located iamidst vineyards, which means narrow steep sandy winepaths. When our car nearly fell backwards we quit our attempt, but by moto or by foot it should be possible. Built by archbishop E. von Berg and finally destroid by the French anno 1689. The castle was never rebuilt, so it only shows its original remains. Each year are festivities held at the ruin, not so in 2011, we were told that there was something wrong with the toilets (obliged even when drinks are served) and therefor no festivities... -A nice ruined castle
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks
We visited with our dogs and it made a pleasant walk. The parking was free and so was the entry into the castle. It was a short walk up hill and for a ruined castle that was free to entry we thought it was very good. You could wonder round most parts of it & had an excellent view of the village below. -Nice and short, perfect for a short outing.
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Castles
Nice little afternoon outing with the kids. Total time was about 1.5-2 hours with spending roughly 15 mins at each ruins. They have plenty of benches and picnic tables to sit and soak it all in. The walk up wasn’t bad, couple of sloped sections but they were minor. We are out of the stroller phase, but you can definitely reach Burg-Neu. Most likely could reach Burg-Alt with a stroller as well but it’s more unpaved trail. Maybe a all-terrain type stroller. It was maybe a 10min walk in between the two. See more..

-Burgruine mit Bewirtung und einem klasse Blick
Spent < 1 hour Ancient Ruins • Castles • Observation Decks & Towers
See more..

Spent 1-2 hours Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks
- 4.5 Quellheiligtum Heidenfelsen (3 reviews)
-Interesting
Spent < 1 hour Ancient Ruins
This little place is a reminder of Roman history in the area. It is possible to get there by different trails. I started close to Baerenlochweiher, uphill Hoernchenstrasse. On the top I entered a hiking trail and followed a sign pointing to Heidenfelsen. In about 15 minutes of comfortable walk I reached the holy spring and two stones with carved characters protected by little wooden building. It is very interesting to see it in the middle of the woods. Hiking here is very comfortable although it is quite busy place, nature is breathtakingly beautiful and the top of the rocks above the spring offeres nice views. See more..

- 4.0 Heidenloecher (3 reviews)
-A Point of Interest as a target for a beautiful walk
Ancient Ruins
The Heidenlocher are a collection of ruins in the pine forest above Deidesheim. They date back to the 9th or 10th centuries and are the remains of a fortified retreat used when the locals were under threat rather than a permanently inhabited settlement. The walk there through the vineyards and then the forest (or park free at the edge of the forest in an official car park) is the main attraction of the visit unless you are an archeologist. Find with the aid of a map for 1 euro from the tourist office. See more..
- 3.0 Burgruine Sponheim (2 reviews)
-Key can be obtained
Ancient Ruins
Its tower is accessible, the key can be obtained free of charge at the last House in front of the ruin (housenumber 5). At least, normally one can visit the tower, when we arrived restorationworks were carried out, so no inner visit for us (so best check on forhand). The castle was first menioned in a charter in 1127, but probably already existed in the 11th century: a Stephan von Spanheim (medieval spelling of Sponheim) was mentioned in 1075 (it is unknown if this mentioned Stephan was a member of the family seat Sponheim). 12th Century enlargement of the fort to beautiful castle seat of the counts family. Count Gotfried II was married to Adelheid von Sayn (who inherited the county of Sayn in 1260). Their three sons shared possessions in 1223-1233: Johan I got Rear County of Sponheim (Hintere grafschaft Sponheim-Starkenburg) with goods to Moselle and Birkenfeld (his seat was Starkenburg at the Moselle). Heinrich received the County of Sayn. Simon II recieved Front County of Sponheim (Vordere grafschaft Sponheim-Kreuznach) with Kreuznach. With this division the Fort lost its meaning as headquarters and from then on only served as widows seat, none of the two lines would wave its right of possession: thus in 1280 the Fort became Ganerbenburg (inhabited by several families), the following years it served noble Ministerial. In 1300 the Castle Chapel was created, as well as a Burgsponheim settlement arose. In 1417, after extinction of the Kreuznacher-line in Sponheim it got into possession of the Starkenburger line. After their extinction in 1437 the Fort and its possessions went into possession of Baden. The Fort was destroyed by Spanish General Spínola during the 30-year war, by 1645 Fort Sponheim became a ruin See more..

Spent 1-2 hours Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Castles
There is not much left from the castle and I didn't find the ruin too interesting but I enjoyed amazing views to Ramsen from there. There is no parking nearby but walking there from either side is worth it because of beautiful nature around. I can't recommend to travel here just because of ruins but as a part of hiking near Ramsen or Kloster Rosenthal it is a nice spot to stop for a while and maybe combine with the arms cold bath available just a few meters from castle. -Blick zurück ins Mittelalter
Spent < 1 hour Ancient Ruins • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
- 4.0 Burgruine Aremberg (1 review)
-Hier lohnt ein Besuch
Spent 2-3 hours Historic Sites • Ancient Ruins • Observation Decks & Towers
See more..
