Attached to the tasting room at Fitz-Ritter Winery (across the street from The Barrel), the Oenosphere is the "underworld" of the winery. This large wine cellar has been set up as a mini-museum with interesting displays, information and historical equipment from the family winery that dates back to 1785. Unlike most of the many wineries in the area, this one specializes in "sekt" or sparkling wine. The ones we sampled were delicious, unusual, and affordable, and we enjoyed touring the Oenosphere cellar to learn about how they were made.See more..

Very small little "vinothèque" looked attractive to us while walking around.(no food,snack served with the wine). Tried some German wine (from the river Saar for example). Friendly owner showed pleasure and pride giving informations about the tasty quality wines he sells. I have written 3 reviews on things to do in Altenahr: 1) hike the Ahr Loop in the National Park, 2) explore Burg Are and 3) hike the Rotweinwanderweg to Mayschoss or Rech or Dernau or beyond. But the small town itself is nice to explore. Probably the main attraction in town is the Winzergenossenschaft Mayschoß-Altenahr, this is a large wine cooperative with locations in Altenahr, Mayschoss and Walporzheim showcasing wines from wineries up and down the Ahrtal (from Altenahr to Walporzheim, at least). Apparently this is the oldest wine cooperative in the world, started in 1868. You can sample all the wines, buy wine and visit the gift shop, 7 days a week. This is where all the best Ahr wines are. Not all the wines are available at all the co-ops, for example you won't see too many (if any) Walporzheim wines in Altenahr. My favorite is the 2015 Mayschoss-Altenahr Spätburgunder trocken at 10.4 euro. Wines range in price from 4 to 20 euro per 750ml. Altenahr has around 12 hotels or so, with the larger ones having good restaurants. Gasthaus Assenmacher is excellent, I had both lunch and dinner there. Fine dining. It's a small town, easy to explore in less than an hour (not counting time at the wine co-op. There are other wine/gift shops on the main street.See more..

Schön ausgestattete FeWo als ideale Basis Station für Aktivitäten im Umland. In der Nähe des Weingut (mit Hofladen) kann man in Mehring sehr gut zu Abend und am Nachmittag Kaffe und Kuchen essen (beides im Umkreis von max. 500m). Familie Endersfelder sind liebenswürdige Gastgeber und zu unserer Anwesenheit war die amtierende Weinkönigin (Tochter Lena) tagsüber auf dem Traktor zu sehen um im Weinberg tätig zu sein.
