    - Impressive Romanesque Cathedral in Speyer

    Speyer Cathedral image
The cathedral St. Mary and St. Stephen in Speyer is church that is unique in its spiritual, architectural, and historical dimensions. Day for day this house of God, founded in the 11th century, casts its spell on people, serves as a site of contemplation and prayer, and testifies to the legacy of romanesque architecture. Furthermore, the cathedral of Speyer is the gravesite of Salian, Staufer, and Habsburg rulers, thus functioning as a symbol of the medieval emperorship. In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. As an episcopal church, the cathedral of Speyer is the spiritual centre of the diocese Speyer. Built in the Middle Ages as a house (Latin: domus) of God, to this very day its entire architecture serves to lead mankind to the Lord: the floor plan, the decoration, and all measurements serve this purpose. As an episcopal cathedral church, as the cathedral's parish church, as a place of pilgrimage: mass is celebrated here every day of the week. See more..

    Liebfrauenkirche, Trier image
This church feels like 'the little sister' next to St. Peter's Dom Trier. Built in early 13th century, it’s one of the earliest Gothic churches in the world. Built entirely on Roman foundation. It has some 15th century wall paintings. Stained glass is a recent add. Church layout is Greek Cross. Burial place of archbishops as far back as 1581. Under this church are numerous excavations not open to the public, however, one area has glass with a railing around it so you can look down in the dig area. See more..
  7. 4.5 Dom zu Worms (372 reviews)
    - Stunning!

    Dom zu Worms image
Lots of gorgeous art in this humongous church! So much history!! In 1016, Burchard of Worms built a Romanesque cathedral was built on the site. Parts of that cathedral still survive. Incredibly, this current, existing Dom St. Peter’s was built in sections from 1125 – 1181. Powerful events happened in this cathedral: The Concordat of Worms (1122), the marriage of Emperor Frederick II to Isabella of England (1235) and the Diet of Worms (1521) and this is where Martin Luther was condemned as a heretic. Salian princes were buried in the crypt (which you can walk around in) in the first half of the 11th century. A Baroque, gilded wood and marble, high altar by Balthasar Neumann was added to the cathedral in the 18th century. The north aisle contains five ‘Gothic tympana’ stone relief scenes, created in 1488 and 1515. The carving of these scenes is just an incredible sight to see. See more..

Don't go here expecting to be blown away by artwork, it has some neat things, but not any signs (In German or otherwise) describing the artwork in here. There are pieces from the 15th to the 18th century. Bombed during WWII, the entire church renovation was completed in the 1970’s and 80’s. Remodeled after pictures and descriptions from the medieval era. A column-framed painting of St. Nicholas is here, from 1680. A wooden crucifix (mid-14th century), figures of the Virgin Mary and Josef (mid-18th century). There are also three grave plates of the powerful Burgtorn family buried here in the 1500’s. See more..

    - Story Solemn and Sad

    Wernerkapelle image
Nothing as sadly beautiful as the ribbed and vaulted ruins of an old chapel. All the iconic wonders burned away leaving yet the soaring grace of stone upon stone... and here, the sour taste story of the supposed C17 jewish ritual murder of the young aryan boy, Werner, which had the chosen people once again exiled and slaughtered and their homes, shops and wealth 'appropriated' (sound familiar?) on just another phony pretext. When the Wernerkappele burned down in a later century, I like to think it was as much the shame which prevented the locals rebuilding. A doubly sad and beautiful ruin, it floats above the town's St Peter irche - a cautionary tale. See more..

    St. Paulin-Kirche image
This is such a gorgeous church that I’m almost shocked that more people haven’t reviewed it on here. It is a little bit of a walk from Porto Nigra and Altstadt, but the payoff is worth it. It’s about a 10 -15 minute walk from Porto Nigra to this church, depending on your pace. The elaborate inside is kind of a surprise. Someone was praying in one of the front pews and I didn’t want to disturb them, so I quickly took a few pictures from the back of the church, and quietly left. I then went outside, and walked around the church’s cemetery. It was very serene and peaceful. See more..

The grounds are manicured and spectacular. The monastery itself is lovely. It’s away from tourists and is like something out of the dark ages. Loved it. People need to look at the church, monastery and gardens before simply assessing the church. As a package it’s anazing. We reached a castle Kropsburg almost by coincidence as we lost our way on another planed hiking. Once we liked the area we decided to not search for the right trail and preferred to explore surroundings. We followed the sign we found just a few steps from the castle, pointing to Marriengrotte, not knowing what we should expect. What a surprise that we found this copy of Lourdes Grotto after less than 5 minutes of walking. It is a beautiful place and it seems to be visited by many people, assuming those many burning candles we could see. Additionally this place offers nice view to the St. Martin and on a way to it you can see several war memorials and stones remembering famous people connected to the region. After visiting the grotto you can either come back to the castle and refresh in their restaurant or choose one of many trails and discover next points of interests. We chose to follow Way of the Cross with Ottilie's chapel on the top. It is very steep trail, but it is worth it the effort. See more..

    Ehemalige Synagoge image
A pitty that we tried to visit this former whent it was closed. As it houses the library the opening hours were in the evening. Most likely we would not have seen much preserved of the former synagogue... Already in 1330 Jews lived in Bad Sobernheim. During the persecution in the plague period in 1348 Jews were murdered in this town. In 1384 Jews again residing in the city were mentioned. First half 15th century four Jewish families lived in town (money lenders). In 1418 Jewish families paid 10 guilder annual tax, poor Jews 4 paid gulden. In 1429 Bad Sobernheim Jews, together with other Jews, were taken captive, they were not expelled, but in the 16th century no Jews resided in Bad Sobernheim. 19th-20th Century amongst the Jews were occupational live stock traders, butcher, merchants for textiles and agricultural products, shoemaker, leather merchant, shopkeeper and stockings manufacturer (Marum stocking factory). There was a synagogue, a school, a ritual bath and a cemetery. 1858 Ordination of the Synagogue. By the effects of the economic boycott, the increasing repression and the lawlessness the Jewish population decreased by migration and emigration. In 1938 Kristallnacht (night of the breaking glass), there were only 45 Jews left, their synagogue was damaged and desecrated, the last 12 Jewish inhabitants of Bad Sobernheim were deported in 1942. In 1939 the synagogue was sold to the city to serve as Aula for the high school, during WW II it was used as Wehrmacht warehouse, subsequently sold to shop Schmidt to serve as a furniture warehouse, afterwards it served as beverages hall. In 2001 purchased by the city, in 2003 after 65 years a prayer service was held again in the former synagoge. Present it serves as library / meeting centre. See more..

    Monastery Karthaus image
Outside the monastery walls hangs a beautiful old crusifix. The Monastery has a small parc. It was originally 1331 built by Archbishop Baldwin of Luxembourg in Trier, outside the city walls. The monastery was destroyed in the 1674 French Palatinate war. After a long search for a location, the monastery was rebuilt from 1680-1730, according to plans from Vitus Schneider (Merzlich). 1794 the monastery was conquered by French troops, abandoned by the monks and soon thereafter lifted by secularization. After several switches of ownership, many reconstructions and again decay, a fundamental renovation took place for the last from 1963 to 1987. The Church serves as a Catholic parish church of Karthaus and the former monastery as community center and for cultural events. Today only the South Wing of the former monastery still stands. Of the North Wing only the cellars remain. See more..

    Ev. Martinskirche Bosenheim image
The village itself has no other attractions. When we visited the church was closed, so only pix of its exterior. 14th Century choir, 1744 Hall church with Flèche. The first Church in Bosenheim was dedicated to St. Martin, probably built very early and presumably burned down in 1279. The Division of Castle Böckelheim between the counts of Sponheim and the Archbishop of Mainz resulted in1279 in a battlefield at Sprendlingen. After the defeaten Sponheimers withdrew to Kreuznach the victorious ones of Mainz destroyed the surrounding villages Pfaffen-Schwabenheim and Bosenheim. Shortly afterwards, the Church was rebuilt, the choir dates from this period. The Rhein counts gave the patronage in 1469 to the canons of Monastery St. Maria in Flonheim, with all its rights and benefits: 13 morgen farmland, 314 morgen Wingert and 1 ¾ meadows (Unit of area: a “morgen” was the area which could be plowed by a team of oxen in one morning). The male line of the counts von Sportheim died out in 1437, so the County was then governed by three Herren, of who the Palatine Prince-Elector had the upper hand. Since he was a member of the Wittelsbach dinasty the county had to endure the Bavarian succession war: in 1504 Bosenheim was plundered by fighters of the margraves von Hessen, the arson of monastery Sponheim and church resulted in a great fire.

See more..
