    - A must do in Idar-Oberstein!

Very interesting tour. We used the English audio guides which were very easy to use. Staff was all very kind. In the first room he came over after to tell us all of the gems in English which was helpful. So inexpensive I couldn’t believe it! Bring cash. Be prepared for a little walk to get there, they aren’t kidding when they say to leave 10-15 minutes to walk from the parking area. Only complaint is there was so many people on our tour it was hard to see things while he was pointing them out, but for us it didn’t matter much since we were using audio guides anyways! See more..
  2. 4.0 Edelsteinminen (40 reviews)
    - Nice to visit

It was a nice guided tour (only guided tours possible). Audio guide in several languages available. It's a small walk from the parking to the mines (10min). The mines can be entered on foot (no elevator, just a small walk). Especially really nice for the kids (8 & 6). The underground lake was lovely. There is also a small shop where you can buy several stones, Ice cream, ... The tour took about 45 minutes. Our 2 dogs were allowed. Very friendly tour gide. See more..

Such a great trip out. Takes about an hour to go round the mine with a lovely guide. Our guide didn’t speak English but a sheet with English translation provided. Cafe and small gift shop. A really nice enterprise which I would recommend for all ages. See more..
  4. 4.5 Roman Mine at Meurin (9 reviews)
    - Fascinating

This place is fascinating. Outside there are lots of reconstructions of machinery used here by Romans. My only grumble is that the brochure shows people demonstrating them and when we visited they were all unattended and roped off (COVID thing maybe? Inside (there is a huge roof built over the mine) you can walk around and down along the semi-covered tunnels and a few completely covered bits of the mine. It's a few metres deep. There is an audioguide available in English which accompanies installations demonstrating how Romans mined here. My 4 year-old loved playing with the different pulley systems you can use to lift bags of 100kg of rock. There is a short film in German but to be honest by the time I got to that I felt I knew how it all worked from the audioguide. We bought a Kombiticket for this and the Vulkanpark Zentrum thingy in Plaidt. Personally I wouldn't bother with the Vulkanpark Zentrum thingy. If you do, know that the Kombiticket is for use on one day only. The guy at the desk spoke reasonable English. He also appears 10 times in the brochure he gave us! Arriving is a bit weird - you turn down a track and have to turn immediately left into a carpark. There is a kiosk thing which was closed on a Saturday and then an uneven path leading downhill. Don't be put off or wonder if you have come to the right place! See more..
  5. 5.0 Weiherschleife (7 reviews)
    - Grinding Workshop
Spent 2-3 hours Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks • Mines
    Weiherschleife image
The name can be translated as “Grinding Workshop (at the) pond”. It is the last of its kind in Idar-Oberstein and serves nowadays as a museum and demonstration room for tourists. Gem stone cutting and grinding has a centuries old tradition in the region. There used to be more than 50 grinding workshops along the Idarbach, a small river nearby and 183 in this area, with “Weiherschleife” being the last remaining one. It was in service until 1945. After a guided tour through the workshop, you continue to a small museum and exhibition room. At the end of the tour is a souvenir shop. See more..

    - Little gem of mining history
Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Mines

This is a harmless little place that is well worth visiting when nearby. A guide will take you through an old iron ore mine that has been in use since a few centuries ago, and there are some good stories and bits and pieces to learn about pre-industrial mining. You need to go with the hourly tour (starts at 11 and last one is at 1700 hrs). It is cold in the mine (9 degrees), but coats and helmets are provided. Tour is in German. See more..
