We took the train to the last stop and hiked back from there to Boppard. It took us about 5 hours, with tons of stops for pictures and snack breaks. The way is very well marked, with signs every few meters. Very hard to get lost. Though if you want to do the full hike like us, be warned that right as you begin approaching Buchholz, there will be very little nature and lots of industry for some time. But after you pass Buchholz, the forest starts again. The view on the viaduct was amazing. The train runs over the viaduct at 6 minutes past the hour and 10 minutes to the hour if you want to snap a photo. There is a nice rest place at the viewing platform. Wear good shoes! Starting off in Brohl is the Vulkan Express opened in 1901 is on of the few remaining narrow gauge railway travelling through the beautiful Eifel Mountains passing hot springs. 67 m above sea level is the headquarters of the railway with its picturesque small station building, sidings, loco sheds and workshop. The immaculate wooden carriages strain full of passengers up very steep gradients to Engelin after 17.5 km with a height of 465 m above sea level. Buffet car sells VULKAN Beer, wine very reasonable too. At Engelin there is a restaurant and bar, or get a huge german curly hotdog in a bun, great cakes. See more..

Spent More than 3 hours Scenic Railroads

While visiting my cousin in Germany, we joined my cousin's Stammtisch group on this day-long excursion (we came from Bad Schonborn, so we traveled a couple of hours to this activity). You can have a large or small group. The rail/bike cars carry 3-5 people each and are relatively easy to pedal. The route takes you from Bornheim to Wertheim, with 5 other towns in between in which you can stop for rest or a little snack or walking around. The entire distance is 12 km each way, but you don't have to go all the way to the end - you can stop at any point and turn around. We stopped in one of the little towns for a wonderful lunch. It is easy for 2 people to remove the rail/bike cars from the tracks (so others on the trip can proceed). The entire route is mostly tree-lined and goes through the countryside with very pretty views and at a very nice, leisurely pace. I would love to do this again - it is a great way to see more of the rural towns and countryside. See more..

Hatten einen tolle Familienausflug mit der Südpfalz-Draisinenbahn, bei der man zwischen unterschiedlichen Fahrraddraisinen wählen kann. Maximal können 7 Personen mit einer Draisine fahren.
Die Strecke führt durch schöne Wälder, Felder und Wiesen. Es müssen u.a. Bahnübergänge bedient werden, ein Spaß für groß und klein. Entlang der 12km langen Strecke kann dann frei pausiert, eingekehrt oder gepicknickt werden. Klare Empfehlung für Familien, Paare oder sogar Vereine. Verbuchung strengstens empfohlen. See more..
