4.5Speyer Cathedral(1.182 reviews) - Impressive Romanesque Cathedral in Speyer Sunday: 11:30 AM - 5:30 PM Spent 2-3 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
The cathedral St. Mary and St. Stephen in Speyer is church that is unique in its spiritual, architectural, and historical dimensions. Day for day this house of God, founded in the 11th century, casts its spell on people, serves as a site of contemplation and prayer, and testifies to the legacy of romanesque architecture. Furthermore, the cathedral of Speyer is the gravesite of Salian, Staufer, and Habsburg rulers, thus functioning as a symbol of the medieval emperorship. In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. As an episcopal church, the cathedral of Speyer is the spiritual centre of the diocese Speyer. Built in the Middle Ages as a house (Latin: domus) of God, to this very day its entire architecture serves to lead mankind to the Lord: the floor plan, the decoration, and all measurements serve this purpose. As an episcopal cathedral church, as the cathedral's parish church, as a place of pilgrimage: mass is celebrated here every day of the week.See more..

Pretty and elegant building. Unfortunately, the general public isn’t allowed inside. You can walk the grounds, which has a small pond or two, and some statues. It was early March when I visited, so the grounds were mostly still in winter mode, but there were daffodils blooming! I also enjoyed watching the ducks swimming in the pond.See more..

4.5Kirschgarten(203 reviews) - A medieval treasure Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
Wow! These buildings are really something worth seeing. So many half timber houses were destroyed over the years, it’s a treat to see them whenever you can. They are so well-kept it’s hard to believe they are nearly 600 years old. If you’ve only seen replicas (like at Disney, German-themed restaurants…) then these are definitely worth a visit. You can’t tour inside, so it is a quick trip but they are off a nice little street full of shopping and cafes and not far from the cathedral, so there’s plenty to do nearby.See more..
Originally the House was called "Zum Säulchen" (the pillars) and was built in 1230 when Trier's medieval city wall was not yet finished. Each house had to defend itself and the entrance was the ‘window’ on the right, accessible only by ladder or wooden staircase that could be pulled up (Trier still has six such Romanesque residential towers ( with the Frankenturm from around 1100 being the oldest). The color scheme of the house is the recreation of considerable original remains.See more..
4.0Holzturm(86 reviews) - Medieval tower of Mainz - The Wood Tower. Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings

4.0Wernerkapelle(78 reviews) - Story Solemn and Sad Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
Nothing as sadly beautiful as the ribbed and vaulted ruins of an old chapel. All the iconic wonders burned away leaving yet the soaring grace of stone upon stone... and here, the sour taste story of the supposed C17 jewish ritual murder of the young aryan boy, Werner, which had the chosen people once again exiled and slaughtered and their homes, shops and wealth 'appropriated' (sound familiar?) on just another phony pretext. When the Wernerkappele burned down in a later century, I like to think it was as much the shame which prevented the locals rebuilding. A doubly sad and beautiful ruin, it floats above the town's St Peter irche - a cautionary tale.See more..

4.0Mainz Hauptbahnhof(63 reviews) - Busy Station Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings
The Hauptbahnhof in Mainz is quite a busy station. As well as long distance trains there are local services to many different nearby stations. There are many different shops on the concourse including a Starbucks and Nanu Nana as well as places to get snacks to eat. At the time I travelled it is law to wear a face covering on public transport so bear this in mind before boarding your train. I've been through the station a couple of times and on both occasions my train has been late. This just means you get to spend a bit more time in Mainz. If you are a rail fan you may enjoy spending time on this station as there is also a variety of freight trains going through as well.See more..

4.0Abtei Marienstatt(31 reviews) - Must see Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
The grounds are manicured and spectacular. The monastery itself is lovely. It’s away from tourists and is like something out of the dark ages. Loved it. People need to look at the church, monastery and gardens before simply assessing the church. As a package it’s anazing. Hint: the souvenir shop sells all sorts of religious and also non religious souvenirs. Some of these are rather unique (for hard to buy people)!See more..
2,5 ha. As its entrace is via a ticketautomat one needs to have 3 Euro per person. For wheelchair one needs to call a telephonenumber which is mentioned at the automat to open the side entrance. Would not advice as one can push a wheelchair upwards the mountain, but once at the ruins a wheelchai is stuch as the ruins are divided by many steps and small stairs. At the entrance is a small museum which was closed when we visited (though opening times were referred to as open). The ruins of the Benedictine monastery Hildegard von Bingen date back to 1108, until 1780 most of the buildings still stood upright. Remains of the complex were used as stone rubble or to buildingmatirial for houses in surounding municipalities. 1842-1844 ownership by Peter Wannemann ,who dug most of the ruin remains free.See more..

As I arrived by train I did not pass under this bridge on the highway. It is easy to walk to from the city as it is near the promenade along the river. If you had your share of “wienerschnitzel mit brattkartoffeln” and are looking for a nice place to have an international inspired dinner, this could be the place. We were four guests all adults. I had a very good tuna (19 euro) and an equally good entrecote (34 euro). The servings looked nice and tasted very good. In fact I was a little impressed.

4.0Die Kurfurstliche Burg(8 reviews) - Kurfürstliche Burg Spent 1-2 hours Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Castles
