    - Impressive Romanesque Cathedral in Speyer

    Speyer Cathedral image
The cathedral St. Mary and St. Stephen in Speyer is church that is unique in its spiritual, architectural, and historical dimensions. Day for day this house of God, founded in the 11th century, casts its spell on people, serves as a site of contemplation and prayer, and testifies to the legacy of romanesque architecture. Furthermore, the cathedral of Speyer is the gravesite of Salian, Staufer, and Habsburg rulers, thus functioning as a symbol of the medieval emperorship. In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. As an episcopal church, the cathedral of Speyer is the spiritual centre of the diocese Speyer. Built in the Middle Ages as a house (Latin: domus) of God, to this very day its entire architecture serves to lead mankind to the Lord: the floor plan, the decoration, and all measurements serve this purpose. As an episcopal cathedral church, as the cathedral's parish church, as a place of pilgrimage: mass is celebrated here every day of the week. See more..
  2. 4.5 Dom zu Worms (372 reviews)
    - Stunning!

    Dom zu Worms image
Lots of gorgeous art in this humongous church! So much history!! In 1016, Burchard of Worms built a Romanesque cathedral was built on the site. Parts of that cathedral still survive. Incredibly, this current, existing Dom St. Peter’s was built in sections from 1125 – 1181. Powerful events happened in this cathedral: The Concordat of Worms (1122), the marriage of Emperor Frederick II to Isabella of England (1235) and the Diet of Worms (1521) and this is where Martin Luther was condemned as a heretic. Salian princes were buried in the crypt (which you can walk around in) in the first half of the 11th century. A Baroque, gilded wood and marble, high altar by Balthasar Neumann was added to the cathedral in the 18th century. The north aisle contains five ‘Gothic tympana’ stone relief scenes, created in 1488 and 1515. The carving of these scenes is just an incredible sight to see. See more..

What a feast to the human eye! This is a beautiful church, a pleasure to visit. Miraculously it suffered only minor damage during the war. - Awesome Abbey.

    Benediktinerabtei Maria Laach image
Maria Laach is the famous abbey at the Laacher See. The abbey church was consecrated in 1156. Construction of the east side of the monastery was completed in 1177 and the west side was finished in 1216. Between 1220 and 1230, a porch was added with an inner garden. In 1892, a new decoration took place by the Archabdij of Beuron. Renovation took place in the second half of the last century. The Abbey of Maria Laach was built in the Stauphic style (Romanesque style). The cross buildings and the groups of towers are characteristic. The abbey contains the mausoleum of Count Hendrik van Laach, the original founder of the abbey church. There are also shops and even a garden center on the grounds of the monastery. See more..

    St Martin Kirche image
It was nearing evening when i was attracted to the lamppost that was just in front of the Church. I took the picture from a certain perspective but later i decided to get inside while there were still people coming out, which means it was still open. I was awed by the altar with some light from outside made an illumination to the inside. the stained-glass windows made it dramatic with dimming light from outside. It was an experience to remember by. See more..
  10. 4.0 Wernerkapelle (78 reviews)
    - Story Solemn and Sad
Spent < 1 hour Points of Interest & Landmarks • Architectural Buildings • Religious Sites • Churches & Cathedrals
    Wernerkapelle image
Nothing as sadly beautiful as the ribbed and vaulted ruins of an old chapel. All the iconic wonders burned away leaving yet the soaring grace of stone upon stone... and here, the sour taste story of the supposed C17 jewish ritual murder of the young aryan boy, Werner, which had the chosen people once again exiled and slaughtered and their homes, shops and wealth 'appropriated' (sound familiar?) on just another phony pretext. When the Wernerkappele burned down in a later century, I like to think it was as much the shame which prevented the locals rebuilding. A doubly sad and beautiful ruin, it floats above the town's St Peter irche - a cautionary tale. See more..

    - So pretty

    St. Paulin-Kirche image
This is such a gorgeous church that I’m almost shocked that more people haven’t reviewed it on here. It is a little bit of a walk from Porto Nigra and Altstadt, but the payoff is worth it. It’s about a 10 -15 minute walk from Porto Nigra to this church, depending on your pace. The elaborate inside is kind of a surprise. Someone was praying in one of the front pews and I didn’t want to disturb them, so I quickly took a few pictures from the back of the church, and quietly left. I then went outside, and walked around the church’s cemetery. It was very serene and peaceful. See more..

Records date this church fFrom 1194. Renovated in 1269, and again in the 19th century. The upper floor dates from 1478. Today's painting was given to the church during the restorations carried out in late 20th century. Lancelet windows are here since the 14th century. There are interesting medieval tombs: the wounded knight with his dog Johann Friedrich von Wolfskehl zu Vetzberg. 1569-1609 and bailiff and customs clerk Meinhard von Schönberg 1530 -1596. For a time he was governor of Heidelberg. See more..

    - An excursion thru history

    St. Katharinen image
A daytime stop to visit the St. Katarinen Church in Oppenheim will certainly prove to be time well spent. Built in the early part of the 13th century, it is one of a very few basilicas to avoid catastrophic damage during the allied bombing campaigns of WWII. Behind the church in a tiny alcove where you will find the "beinhaus" (bone house) where local builders neatly stacked the remains removed from gravesites in a cemetery which was "relocated" to allow for church expansion. How quintessential German! I recommend you take time to stroll up into the vineyards behind the church to visit the ruins which overlook the church, Oppenheim stadt, and the Rhine River valley. If you stand there quietly andclose your eyes, you may even hear faint echoes of the voice of George Patton barking orders as his forces made their crucial river crossing at Oppenheim nearly 70 years ago. Historians may talk about Remagen, but tacticians talk about Oppenheim. See more..

The church is open to the public. It is still decorated for Christmas! The glow from the red Christmas lights made it so pretty! There were stars hanging from the ceiling! This is one church that impresses really from the outside and I was so unlucky to find it closed after a long stroll in Koblenz. The grounds are manicured and spectacular. The monastery itself is lovely. It’s away from tourists and is like something out of the dark ages. Loved it. We stumbled upon this church after seeing the spires from the Rhine cruise and from Burg Klopp. It was a large church which was very open. Stiftskirche St. Martin und St. Severus image
Walking into the Church of my Grandfather and cousins and ancestors (Walterich and Port families) was an experience in itself, but when we entered the side door and encountered the first larger-than-life statue it took us aback. There were several of these, along with a close to life-size scene depicting Jesus laid out on a table after his crucifixion, surrounded by the people who were closest to Him. There are also the tombs of previous Monsignors buried in the floor throughout the large church, which is magnificent without being gaudy. As you can see the church from just about anywhere in the small rural community, it is evident that it played a central role in the lives of the people of Muenstermaifeld. The views of the surrounding area from the Church are beautiful as well. Off the beaten path, but well worth the drive and time. See more..

A surprise, the parish church of St. Goar, though Protestant, retains much older artistic elements from its days as a Catholic Church. This includes the crypt of St. Goar, reportedly dating back to the XIIth century and extensive primitive frescoes of the late XVth century. The church itself was the first in the area to be designated Protestant based on the election of the local ruler (in about 1527). See more..

After the destruction of WWII it was decided to rebuild the interior in a modern style. Although it seems surprising when you enter the church it is beautifully done. They have kept certain elements like the painting that was destroyed which was redone in a mosaic behind the organ. We were fortunate to see the Laacher Munster which is part of the Maria Laach Abbey. The church is very old but well taken care. The church is maintained by the Benedictine Abbey and by its fathers (priests), brothers (monks/artisans) and the hired workers. The church has gorgeous mosaic religious scenes. at 5 PM the order has a procession and perform Vespers (Gregorian chant) for 30 minutes. It is glorious and beautiful to hear. It appears that the church also sponsors concerts during the year too. There is a small chapel where candles can be lit and messages can be written for prayers. The church is lit just before Vespers and noon prayer so this is a good time to come and take pictures. Lovely. I would not recommend this for small children. Take your time and visit the grounds. There is a lovely hotel next door with grounds that are open to the public. There is even a giant chess board where you can challenge your friends to a game or two. See more..
