  1. 4.5 Ehrenbreitstein Fortress (1.440 reviews)
    - A good history lesson

    Ehrenbreitstein Fortress image
This visit was a very good one since our guide was an actor who took the role of an inspector during the construction of the fortress. He was excellent and got the group involved in playing various roles. Truly a unique approach to giving a guided tour. Since our tour was scheduled for late in the afternoon, the sun went down and we were able to view the city at night from the hill. We also learned that this fortress was never used. See more..

  3. 4.5 Mittelalterlicher Marktplatz (468 reviews)
    - Fairytale town
    Historic Sites
    Mittelalterlicher Marktplatz image
The small town of Bernkastel on the banks of the Moselle seems fabulous. Its main attraction is the amazing half-timbered houses that look like toys. Perhaps the most beautiful place in the city is Marktplatz, i.e. trading area. Here, each house has its own unique face and history. One of the most beautiful buildings is the Town Hall or Rathaus. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of shops and boutiques, souvenir and wine shops with famous Mosel wine, in this relatively small town. My husband and I thought that we would spend no more than two hours here, but we stayed for 4 hours to not only see the town, but also shop and try a dessert in a famous "konditorei " Cafe Hansen on the market square. One of the main attractions of the square (and the most photographed place in the town) "Crooked House", on the right if you are looking at the Town Hall. Don't miss! Enjoy!! See more..

    Burg Nanstein image
My first walk up the hill to the castle wearing jeans in August was a bit warm, to put it mildly. On subsequent trips I wore shorts and had a much time. The castle grounds provides an excellent view of the city below and there is a small cafe where you can buy lunch and refreshments with outdoor seating. There is a small entrance fee to enter the castle proper, about $4.00 US. Once inside you are free to explore from top to bottom. The castle is centuries old and it obvious it has been under reconstruction various times during it's history. Adults are likely to appreciate the beautiful views and historical information, while children will certainly enjoy exploring all of the nooks and crannies. See more..
  6. 4.0 Metternich Castle (274 reviews)

    Metternich Castle image
A must do when visiting Beilstein! It is just a short walk up a path and stairs to get to the castle. There is a small fee to enter that goes to helping maintain the castle. I definitely suggest taking the time to have a drink or meal at the cafe! The food was nothing special (remember they are cooking on top of a ruined castle). But the namesake sekt is delightful. Have a glass, relax, and enjoy the stunning views of the Mosel. See more..

  9. 4.0 Schangelbrunnen (205 reviews)
    - Too cute!
    Historic Sites
    Schangelbrunnen image
Though I wanted to look for this while visiting for the day in Cologne, I didn’t get directions but we managed to stumble upon the manhole cover so I knew we were close. It is in the old part of the city so it’s not hard to find but it is tucked away in a little courtyard. There was a large group of children there having a great time playing in the fountain and trying to be the one in the way when the statue “spits”. It was really cute to watch them! The statue is between buildings on three side and a large sycamore tree on the other so it’s a bit hard to photograph especially with no one around. It's free to see. See more..
  10. 4.0 Jesuitenplatz (169 reviews)
    - The Most Charming Square.
    Historic Sites
    Jesuitenplatz image
I guess that the Jesuitenplatz (Jesuit Square) is the most beautiful square in the Old Town of Koblenz. We were here in December and also visited the Christmas Market here. The name comes from the religious order of the Jesuites. The palatial Jesuit school with its towers and magnificent porches on the eastern side of the square was built suring the 17th century. it houses the Koblenz city hall since 1895. See more..

Temple of Isis & Mater Magna image
If you enjoy history and antiquity, then this should really be on your list. This is one of the very main roman remains in Mainz and a very impressive one. It was discovered while constructing a shopping center in Mainz, this is why it really is inside the mall. The entrance is free of charge but visitors are welcome to pay something if they enjoyed the museum. One of the ladies offered me a guided tour of the museum, which was awesome. See more..

This is one of the most intricately carved statues/monuments I have ever seen. You can spend lots of time looking at all of the fine detail and stories that are told within. It is located in the altstadt, in a very nice square where you can enjoy some coffee, food, eis, or a beer. There is lots of room to sit on benches or on the steps near the fountain to enjoy your time. See more..

    Alte Haus image
Enjoy both the inside and outside of this historic, half-timbered structure. The menu is limited and cash only. The inside is warmly and richly decorated: one could wander in the small dining rooms for hours to view the art, furniture, etc. Do not miss the apple strudel: one order is quite enough for three! The presentation is lovely! See more..

The cable ride over the Rhine, the wide open spaces of the Castle. The friendly people everywhere, and a maze of tunnels to explore. When I visited, I met some researchers who told me I'd wandered into a part of it that wasn't open to the general public yet, and they said this very courteously. I returned to the general public area and the ability to photograph the place was still excellent. I recommend it. See more..

  18. 4.0 Vier Turme (87 reviews)
    - Altstadt Koblenz is always a joy to visit
    Historic Sites
    Vier Turme image
This intersection, Vier Turme ("four towers") is pretty much in the center of Altstadt at the intersection of Marktstrasse/Löhrstrasse and Am Plan/Altengraben. These buildings with their oriel windows and towers have been beautifully restored since the city was so horribly bombed during World War II. One block from the Vier Turme is a commemorative bronze disk (see photos) that essentially says, "between 1944 and the end of the war, 40 Allied bombing runs, utilizing 3772 plans, dropped 10,000 tons of bombs on Koblenz, destroying 87% of the city center and killing 1000 people." - Varied and interesting
Sunday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Historic Sites • Art Museums
    Stadtmuseum Simeonstift image
The City Museum Simeonstift in Trier shows art and cultural treasures from the Middle Ages to well into the 21th century. The exhibition is founded on a collection of valuable donations made by well-known citizens of the city. The artefacts on display are divided into a variety of sections, including paintings, sculptures, arts and crafts, Coptic textiles, furniture and small Oriental plastic art forms. The focal point of the permanent exhibition revolves around the history of the city of Trier. Regularly changing special exhibitions are dedicated to Trier’s native artists or to topics associated with the city. The collection is housed in the Roman building of the Collegiate of St. Simeon, which originates from the 11th century and is directly adjacent to the Porta Nigra. Also worthy of note is the building itself, which boasts one of the oldest and rarely preserved two-storey cloisters. The admission price includes an audio guide (D/E/F/NL), also available as an audio guided tour for children (D). See more..

This citadel is well located. Mainz a few centuries ago, one of the most important cities in Europe does not matter today. The Citadel is a building structure that once had phenomenal significance for this city, today it is a place where you can take a walk, eat in one of the pubs and look at the mouth of the River Main to the River Rhine. Not spectacular but worth a visit. See more..

  27. 4.0 Der Binger Mauseturm (55 reviews)
    - Unique in History
    Historic Sites
    Der Binger Mauseturm image
This historical Mauseturm "river toll booth" seemed rather unique in history to me. I liked seeing it. I imagine the Rhine River has changed considerably over the centuries since the days it was manned and functional. This observation is base upon my seeing the near 1000 km long rock work along its sides on both banks, the locks, etc. and the amount of very large-long commercial shipping that now is common. The Rhine now emulates a wet German autobahn from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Even if both the river channel and boats were smaller in the old days the process, control, management, policing and money securing and handling involved in collecting tolls at this location using this "small Castle" would make an interesting movie. Klein Venedig image
The district at the mouth of the Ellerbach in the Nahe River is called Small Venice as the houses stand near the enbankement. Actually, this is the view on the backside of the adjoining houses. When we visited for weeks Germany (as the rest of Europe) were going trough temperatures above 34°, therefor the river did not have much water in it. Never the less were the row of houses at the embankement a beautiful sight. See more..

    Historic Sites
    Romische Villa Urbana image
If you don't know about it, or you don't ask a local, you might miss this wonderful monument, which is hidden in the vineyards of Longuich. It's usually serene, we rarely meet any tourists here, and we visit at least once a month. It is one of our favorite places in the area. :) The villa was built in the II century AD, and probably served as a retirement home for an official from nearby Augusta Treverorum (Trier). The ruins of the villa were discovered in 1984, and the building was reconstructed in the following years. See more..

2,5 ha. As its entrace is via a ticketautomat one needs to have 3 Euro per person. For wheelchair one needs to call a telephonenumber which is mentioned at the automat to open the side entrance. Would not advice as one can push a wheelchair upwards the mountain, but once at the ruins a wheelchai is stuch as the ruins are divided by many steps and small stairs. At the entrance is a small museum which was closed when we visited (though opening times were referred to as open). The ruins of the Benedictine monastery Hildegard von Bingen date back to 1108, until 1780 most of the buildings still stood upright. Remains of the complex were used as stone rubble or to buildingmatirial for houses in surounding municipalities. 1842-1844 ownership by Peter Wannemann ,who dug most of the ruin remains free. Sunday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality Museums • Historic Sites • Points of Interest & Landmarks
    Industrial Monument Jakob Bengel image
The industrial heritage monument Jakob Bengel is the only authentic manufacturing plant with company flats and an industrialist mansion, which embodies the over 130 year industrial history of the city of Idar-Oberstein. In the district of Oberstein, situated below the city theatre, the Bengel company, which employed 100 people during the golden age, offers guided tours through the factory. Insights are given into the chain-, jewellery-, and accessory production with diverse technologies and numerous self developed tools. The partly antique machinery and old production processes indicate the creative power of the trade (jewellery design, engraving and the building of tools), which in the era of controlled mechanics set the prerequisites for a successful jewellery production. Since 2003 the Art Deco jewellery of Jakob Bengel of the 20’s and 30’s, is reproduced according to their own pattern books with the original tools and in the same production method in limited editions for special See more..

    Synagogue Monument image
Saw the one review posted previously and wandered down from my hotel. The marked stone, which can is your marker from the sidewalk, and the prominent partial arch, which can be seen from the street, make this memorial easily found. The names of those killed or deported can be found carved on the backside of the arch. But the most interesting element is the use of multiple binocular stands, with virtual reality constructions of both the inside and the exterior of the former Synagogue. It gives an excellent sense of what once stood their and what was lost at the hands of the National Socialist Party in 1938. We have few memorials of what Kristallnacht--the night of broken glass--did, when the Nazi's destroyed numerous Jewish homes, shops, and synagogues--in what can only be described as the precursor to pure evil--the final solution. Highly recommend a stop here to see and reflect on it all. See more..

It was a very hot day when we visited Andernach and we were happy to find this church open and decided to visit it and spend some time in its shade although we saw so many churches in previous few days that we thought nothing can surprise us anymore. But it seems there is always something new and extraordinary waiting for discovery. We were amazed by its neat look with unusual wall decorations resembling byzantine temples a bit. We met a lady in the church who told us a lot of details about the church.
