Not a reason to come to Koblenz, but if you happen to be here, come check it out. This column has been here since the year 2000. Right when we approached this fountain, my one daughter stepped on the sandal of my other daughter, and broke it. Luckily, is fountain square is lined with retail shopping stores. See more..
  2. 4.5 Mariensaeule (92 reviews)
    - St. Mary's Column - Mariensaeule, Trier, Germany
    Monuments & Statues
    Mariensaeule image
You can't miss St. Mary's Column, which is across the river Moselle on the highest point on the cliffs. The panorama is great from here and you can see for miles. You can view the entire city of Trier from here and there are multiple photo opportunities not only of Trier but up and down the Moselle River as well. Obviously, it should be visited on a clear day to take advantage of the landscape. We drove over and parked on the road below and walked up the stairs to the monument. It was built with donations from the citizens of Trier and dedicated in 1866 to commemorate the declaration by the Catholic Church of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. A crowned statue of St. Mary stands on a pillar over 130 ft high. Erected with donations from Trier citizens, it was dedicated in 1866, commemorating the declaration by the Catholic Church of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. It's worth a half hour of your time just for the photo opp. See more..
  3. 4.0 Saint George's Fountain (92 reviews)
    - Nice fountain with interesting surroundings
    Monuments & Statues
    Saint George's Fountain image
The fountain is a tourist attraction at "Kornmarkt" surrounded by a small park with some benches under trees to take a rest. But nearby you also find some interesting restaurants and nice shops. When you enter the courtyard of the historical post office on the other side of the pedestrian area you find some hidden shops, restaurants and a city hotel and if you turn to the opposite side you can see the Roman Aula Palatina (Emperor`s Reception Hall). Walking the pedestrian area to the left you`ll reach the "Karl Marx Haus" and to the right you`ll come to the interesting Main Market. See more..
  4. 4.0 Lorelei Statue (88 reviews)
    - Neat legend and nice statue but maybe unnecessarily realistic
    Monuments & Statues
    Lorelei Statue image
Driving up the Rhine toward Oberwesel we took the turn off to view the statue. I enjoyed stopping in the parking area and seeing the cool stone statue with the map of the middle Rhine as well as walking down the jetty to see the Lorelei. The statue is large and well done but for such a legend I don't think the statue needed to look so much like a naked lady sitting on the rock. I think it could have been stylized more to fit the legend but maybe that's just me. The walk down the jetty is a bit rough and has a lot of rocks sticking out of the ground and it took a while to get to the statue but it was a nice diversion all the same. See more..

The empress or queen Augusta must be so great at the time. I could feel her power only by seeing her statue. As it lies on the bank of Rhein river, the panorama is just amazing. "Inventors' Fountain" erected in 1983 by Gernot Rumpf as a gift of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce to the Koblenz citizens. Gernot Rumpf (born 1941, known for fountains and sculptures with Palatine and biblical motifs). The fountain is a reminiscence both of Noah's Ark and of the technical inventors of the region: "The ship is a means of transport on the busy Rhine. - Well worth a stop!....One of the more interesting uses of virtual reality I have seen in Europe
Spent < 1 hour Historic Sites • Monuments & Statues
    Synagogue Monument image
Saw the one review posted previously and wandered down from my hotel. The marked stone, which can is your marker from the sidewalk, and the prominent partial arch, which can be seen from the street, make this memorial easily found. The names of those killed or deported can be found carved on the backside of the arch. But the most interesting element is the use of multiple binocular stands, with virtual reality constructions of both the inside and the exterior of the former Synagogue. It gives an excellent sense of what once stood their and what was lost at the hands of the National Socialist Party in 1938. We have few memorials of what Kristallnacht--the night of broken glass--did, when the Nazi's destroyed numerous Jewish homes, shops, and synagogues--in what can only be described as the precursor to pure evil--the final solution. Highly recommend a stop here to see and reflect on it all. See more..

I grew up 700 km far from here and I knew nothing about Kaiserslautern, but I knew FCK, although I am not a soccer fan. Such a famous club it is! Therefore I was not surprised when I moved to the area and one of the first attractions I have seen in the city was this sculptures installation located close to the main train station, on a way to the soccer stadium. Nothing can more characterize Kaiserslautern. And although the statues are in fact ugly, I like this place very much. See more..

There are symbolic goats everywhere in Bitburg. This fountain depicts several sculptures of children wearing goat skins. During the thirty year war the citizens of Bitburg managed to outwit the Swedish army surrounding the city giving the impression of having safe long term surplus of food in form of herds of goats. The citizens of Bitburg dressed their kids to look from afar like goats which saved Bitburg! Beautiful fountain/ sculpture complex. See more..

    - Eine Legende

    Denkmal Juan Manuel Fangio image

Resting on the console are the sculptures of a boy playing lute and a sitting girl listening to the music. Above the sculpture is the 19th century new years prayer of the pastor of St. Lamberti in Münster painted on the wall. The sculpture was created by the German sculptor Helmut Bourger. This is a very interesting fountain sculpture shows a puzzling two-faced figure on a column. This bronze sculpture is supposed to represent "eternal life". A woman's face on one side is awake, has open eyes and represents the DAY. Back to back to it is a male face with closed eyes representing the NIGHT. And that is not all! On top of the heads there is a plate with fruit (biblical apples?) and two snakes. It reads that the fountain was created by Jan Kotek, Czech sculptor from Karlovy Vary. You should see this fountain! “Our Heroes” Emblazoned below the silent sentinel who stands guard faithfully over his townspeople. A short walk from either the train station in Winnweiler or another walking path near Unterm Eisvogel leads you up a quiet, easy path to this beautiful site of remembrance. The memorial is quite large, with special stairs that are accessible from the outside of the monument that lead you to a stunning viewing platform about 10 meters above the remembrance chamber. The village of Winnweiler can be nicely viewed from there. Inside at the ground level is the remembrance chamber. One will be struck by the vigilant sentinel (a 400% scale military guard) who guards the memory of those lost in World Wars One and Two - who were from this village. Several large tablets list military men, workers, and civilians. This monument is one of the most stunning I have visited. I don’t say this lightly as I was assigned to Arlington National Cemetery when I was in the military. The walk to the monument is uphill and would be difficult for someone with limited mobility. Do bear in mind the second path from near Unterm Eisvogel- which would allow a car to drive up to the monument. It is a farm trail, but is used by some to drive up. There used to be benches around the monument on walking trails. The benches have long since rotted away. A visit to this monument is well worth it...as is keeping the memory alive of those lost.
