experience the city gate
Seeing this city gate perfectly incorporated into its surroundings and learning about its Medieval origin feels like a discovery. Without learning about its importance as the only surviving city gate one could just casually pass by it. In its times the gate helped collect the fees and defend the town. Make note of St Michael on the outer side - a patron saint of Bernkastel.

Town gate surviving since 1300
The Graach gate was built as part of a town wall protecting Bernkastel against foreign aggression. Originally there were eight gates, this is the only one surviving. A small museum dedicated to the town's 700-year old history and development is located within the gate. A figure of Saint Michael, the patron saint of Bernkastel, is situated in a niche on the outside of the gate.
