Blüechermuseum Kaub, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

4.5 (17 reviews) Spent Ranking #2 in Kaub Speciality Museums

A small gem

You'd need to know this museum was there, as you'd never stumble across it. Commemorating Blucher's crossing on the Rhine in the Napoleonic Wars, it has a decent mix of historic sweep and minutiae - uniforms, badges, guns, other weaponry, odd documents, personal effects. It is small, quiet (no-one else appeared while I was there) but gripping. Worth a stop as you race up or down the Rhine, and Kaub has an excellent ferry service from the West Bank of the river.

    Excellent small museum
This is an excellent small museum depicting Bluecher's forces crossing the Rhine in early 1814. We found this museum only by scrutinising a google map before leaving home, in order to find more to do while staying in Ruedesheim. This small town has no availablility for parking in the streets, they are far too narrow. Instead there is plenty of parking alongside the main road as you enter town. Kaub is a long narrow settlement along the river, and a good guide as to where to park closest to the museum is to locate and park at the Bluecher statue on the main road. Then walk under the nearby railway bridge into a small square and turn left. We saw one poster in Ruedesheim advertising the museum and the commentary on our Rhine cruise the previous day highlighted this museum. Otherwise we didn't see any other advertising. We were given a small guide in English to exhibits once inside the museum which we really needed as all information was in German. You get a sense of Bluecher actually being there, with several items of his furniture. There is a large diorama of zinnfiguren depicting the Rhine crossing. We spent an hour here which is as much as you need as it is not a large exhibition. Cost for entry 4E each but we felt it was worth it just for the diorama. A couple of postcards are on sale as is a small booklet on the story of the crossing.

Very interesting, but better to understand some German
For anyone with an interest in military history, this is an excellent museum. You will of course get more out of the visit if you understand German, but even someone with no German skills will appreciate the excellent collection of period arms and uniforms.
