National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center image
The National Infantry Museum emphasizes the values that define the Infantryman, as well as the nation he protects: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. It preserves and displays one of the greatest collections of military artifacts in the world, but it is a museum of people, not things. As a visitor, you will meet the Infantryman face to face and join him on his journey. You will come to understand why an Infantryman does what he does, why he puts himself in harm’s way in defense of an idea and you will leave transformed, just as the Infantry transforms the man into the Soldier. The 190,000-square-foot museum opened in June 2009 on a 200-acre tract of hardwoods and pines just outside the gates of the Fort Benning Maneuver Center of Excellence. See more..

The Atlanta History Center was founded on the big ideas and relentless fascination of 14 Atlantans who were emphatic about our city’s historical relevance in society. In a sense, our organization was created by Atlanta’s biggest fans, and we love that detail. In 1926, these founding members introduced the Atlanta Historical Society into the world with one mission: to help preserve Atlanta’s history. In 1990, after decades of collecting, researching, publishing and celebrating the early stories of our great Southern community, the Atlanta Historical Society and all of its holdings officially became the Atlanta History Center. - A Look into the Unknown
Thursday: Spent 1-2 hours History Museums
    Pin Point Heritage Museum image
When we pulled up to the Pin Point Heritage Museum, we were a little taken aback since the museum looked so small. When we entered the museum, we were greeted with several friendly faces and warm, "Welcomes!" Since we pre-bought our tickets online, we were able to begin a tour with David shortly after arriving. David was incredibly knowledgable about Pin Point's history, the science behind the industry, and included a discussion about the racial history and context surrounding Pin Point. The tour was thorough with ample time to read the infographics in each building. We ended our experience by watching the documentary about the people and history of Pin Point. Overall, the experience was a great addition to our trip to Savannah and David's knowledge about the property made the experience even more worthwhile. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who wants to learn more about the unique history of the East Coast. See more..

Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • History Museums
    Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion image
Completed in 1839, Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion is one of the finest examples of High Greek Revival architecture in the nation. Designed by noted architect Charles Clusky, an Irish immigrant and built by Timothy Porter of Farmington, Connecticut, the Mansion looms over Milledgeville with its stately columns and imposing facade. Serving as the residence for Georgia's chief executives for over thirty years, the Mansion's history encompasses the antebellum, Civil War, and early Reconstruction phases of the state's history. Such noted state leaders as George Crawford, Howell Cobb and Joseph E. Brown resided in the building and used it as a stage for speeches and also to introduce guests of national standing. Georgia's Old Governor’s Mansion also served as a stage on which many elements of the complex social issues of the antebellum period were played out. Slavery and the complexity of society and gender roles are among the issues that shape the history of the building and are explored in tandem with the issues of politics. During the Civil War, the Mansion was claimed as a "prize" in the "March to the Sea," when General William T. Sherman headquartered in the building on November 23, 1864. Following the war, Georgia's seat of government was relocated to Atlanta, and the Mansion was abandoned. Given over to Georgia Normal & Industrial College (currently known as Georgia College) in 1889, the Mansion served as the founding building of the institution and is the campus's most treasured structure. Beginning in the late 1990s, an initiative was begun to return the Mansion to its antebellum splendor. Following five years of intensive historical, structural and material research, Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion began its long awaited historic restoration in November of 2001. Funded through the Georgia General Assembly and a generous grant from the Woodruff Foundation, over three years of painstaking work has restored the original layout, coloration, lighting and appea... We are a beach going family when on vacation. This time we chose a different itinerary. I wasn’t sure how our 12 & 14 year olds would like it. They loved it!!! The 12 year old said, “This is better than the beach!” (That’s big!) We enjoyed every facet of this museum. Our favorites: The blacksmith was so fun and fascinating to watch work and so very friendly. The lady at the Tift home made us feel as though we’d stepped back in time. The gentleman at the wood shop was loving every minute of sharing with us. We enjoyed seeing a grist mill in action making grits and cornmeal. The Clark Cabin was a definite highlight. This is a gem of a store/museum for those interested and not offended by history and southern heritage. Mr Dent is a wealth of information and a gentleman with a kind soul no matter what cancel culture says. My husband came here as a kid and said nothing has changed. I wish I had met Mr Dent sooner so I could explore his store and hear his stories. He knows his stuff!! See more..

One of the oldest homes in the Atlanta area, the Root House is more typical of its time and place than the columned mansions popularized by Gone With the Wind. Though the home and grounds have been meticulously restored to their 1850s appearance, modern touchscreens and interactive displays have been added to help tell the story of the Root family and their enslaved house servants. Officer Lopez came and got us from the lower level of the museum to invite us to the main Bay to sit in the large fire truck and get a mini fire helmet. He gave us an overview of the station, showed us the fire pole which they no longer need to use. He turned the lights on in the big truck and let us sit in the cab! Then they got a call and had to leave but waved as they went out to do their duty! My granddaughter had a ball! And so did Nana and Papa! Well done Mr Lopez. See more..
