It is an actual open pit gold mine that was established in 1847 and was worked commercially until the early 1980s. We've been open to the public since 1969 and we are the oldest gold mining establishment in North Georgia. At Crisson Gold Mine, there is a 130-year-old stamp mill that is still used to crush quartz rock which contains gold. This crushed rock is called ore. In addition to the stamp mill, we have rod mills and jaw crushers that we occasionally use. All of these antique gold mining machines along with our open pit mine can be seen when you visit our gold mine. See more..

  6. 4.0 Chattahoochee Ruby Mines (2 reviews)
    - Disappointing
    Spent 1-2 hours Mines
After reading the one glowing review of this place, my wife and I felt like we had to go since we are major rock hounds! They do have some cool specimens for sale, but a good most of them are very overpriced. Most of the really colorful "rocks" you see from the road are actually slag glass; cool looking but definitely not real gems. They also had some stones like selenite that really shouldn't get wet uncovered and out in the open, starting to melt. The guy said they were remodeling, which could explain the amount of mess, but I was still kind of shocked to see so many specimens getting ruined by the weather, especially since it looked like a lot of the stuff had been sitting in place for basically forever. I'm giving it three stars despite being disappointed because they did have some cool stuff, but a lot of it was damaged or dirty. I really wish I could have given it a better review but I just can't.
