  4. 4.5 Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion (124 reviews)
    - Beautiful architectural piece of history
Thursday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Historic Sites • Architectural Buildings • History Museums
    Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion image
Completed in 1839, Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion is one of the finest examples of High Greek Revival architecture in the nation. Designed by noted architect Charles Clusky, an Irish immigrant and built by Timothy Porter of Farmington, Connecticut, the Mansion looms over Milledgeville with its stately columns and imposing facade. Serving as the residence for Georgia's chief executives for over thirty years, the Mansion's history encompasses the antebellum, Civil War, and early Reconstruction phases of the state's history. Such noted state leaders as George Crawford, Howell Cobb and Joseph E. Brown resided in the building and used it as a stage for speeches and also to introduce guests of national standing. Georgia's Old Governor’s Mansion also served as a stage on which many elements of the complex social issues of the antebellum period were played out. Slavery and the complexity of society and gender roles are among the issues that shape the history of the building and are explored in tandem with the issues of politics. During the Civil War, the Mansion was claimed as a "prize" in the "March to the Sea," when General William T. Sherman headquartered in the building on November 23, 1864. Following the war, Georgia's seat of government was relocated to Atlanta, and the Mansion was abandoned. Given over to Georgia Normal & Industrial College (currently known as Georgia College) in 1889, the Mansion served as the founding building of the institution and is the campus's most treasured structure. Beginning in the late 1990s, an initiative was begun to return the Mansion to its antebellum splendor. Following five years of intensive historical, structural and material research, Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion began its long awaited historic restoration in November of 2001. Funded through the Georgia General Assembly and a generous grant from the Woodruff Foundation, over three years of painstaking work has restored the original layout, coloration, lighting and appea... T.R.R. Cobb House image
Went to this house because of the history and architecture. Found way more than I was looking for. The home had been moved from Athens and then returned back to Athens after a long and sorry sojourn in Stone Mountain, Atlanta, Ga. The docent gave an excellent snapshot of the family who built the house, the moving of the home, and the renovations still under way. It is a beautiful home, with period antiques, and some original family antiques and furniture. Take about an hour for tour. FREE, unless you give a small donation. See more..

Cedartown Museum of Coca-Cola Memorabilia image
If you don't like the traffic in Atlanta, drive to Cedartown, GA and see the Cedartown Museum of Coca-Cola Memorabilia on Main Street. Using the 1900 Coca-Cola bottling plant in Cedartown, the Morris family, and especially 19-year old Daniel, have been working hard to prepare this place for opening and the result is a fantastic salute to Coca-Cola. The price of admission is very reasonable and the "staff" (the Morris family) are very knowledgeable and hospitable. Be sure to go back often because they are always adding new items to be seen. My favorite is the large mahogany wood bar in the front that came from England. A beautiful monument to the old-style soda fountains. See more..

    St. Paul's Episcopal Church image
This is a lovely historical church established in 1750 by the church of England with a small burial ground in back (there have been 5 Episcopal churches on this site). It's also adjacent to the riverwalk but please don't park in the church parking lot if you only plan to do the riverwalk. As you stroll the burial ground (please do not take rubbings of the headstones) you will find the grave of a signer of the constitution, governors, confederate generals of the Civil War, and other important people to Augusta. The inside of the church is lovely. While we were there the organ player was practicing songs and the music was amazing. If you are already doing the riverwalk I recommend taking a quick look at the church. See more..

    Bedingfield Inn Historic Site image
We discovered the Bedingfield Inn when we drove into the town of Lumpkin, GA to get a picnic lunch to take to Providence Canyon. Bedingfield Inn is a lovingly restored Victorian stagecoach inn built around 1836. Located in the center of the city, it stands out amongst the dilapidated closed-up buildings. We walked around the 2-story inn building, peering in the windows. On the front of the building, there are 2 entrance doors, one for the men to enter a "public" room where they could socialize and drink. Since women were not supposed to be seen in such places with the men, the women had a separate entrance into a parlor where they could visit together. Behind the Inn is a single story building, which was perhaps a kitchen area. Although there is a historic marker, it does not provide details about the layout of the site. There is also a garden, which was overgrown, but appeared to have roses, and then there was a log cabin "dog trot", roughly from the same period I guess. The buildings are interesting to see, as they represent the bustling frontier times dominated by an agrarian plantation lifestyle. For me, though, the greater intrigue of this site is the story of how such a booming city has turned into a near ghost-town. We passed a closed bbq restaurant and a Dollar General (which had very limited selection). We couldn't find a picnic lunch, but we left with lots to think about. See more..
