I am not a history buff by any means. I enjoy tours and learning and so this was completely new to me. We had a potentially more unique experience because we were a military entity that drove and got a tour but I have to say this is amazing. A large group of us from a military school in Alabama drove out here for a field trip. We had been studying military history and this was a capstone to the studies. We arrived by bus at the visitor's center. They have so much to learn and see in there for the little time we had. Weapons from the ages, walls of timelines, and artifacts from the time period, as well as a little shop. We moved outside and were guided through a terrain model of the wars as they happened. Specifically with Bragg and how he lost the area due to his decisions and bad communication with his subordinates. It is interesting to see things in person when it comes to military tactics on a broad leadership perspective. We visited lots of sites and got to see how forces move, key terrain, avenues of approach, and the big picture on some of these battles. The atmosphere of this place is beautiful and the design and layout of the displays and guides are amazing for someone to learn. We only spent one day here but I can imagine you could spend many and learn a lot about this battle and assets during this time frame in our countries history. I would recommend this to anyone and not just history buffs. Even if you don't subscribe to history, just walk around and enjoy nature in this historical property. See more..

I visited on February 5. Admission was free thanks to the Georgia Historical with promotion by Delta Airlines. Normal admission is very reasonable. All-Terrain Georgia Action Track Chair can be reserved to allow trail access. 4 miles of trails can be hiked 7 days a week. Definitely dog friendly. There is a small museum that is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9-5. There are picnic facilities and community room available for rent. Check their website for different Civil War reenactment events. There is also an 1850 homestead and cabin that is sometimes open with an interpreter. Nice quiet park in NW Georgia. See more..

A must see stop if you love civil war history, there are many information signs detailing events that took place in1864. This visitor is one of the best I've visited, being in the original home. There you find the many, many items found on the battlefield and display with the history info. My personal favorite are the beautiful dresses worn in the day, some are authentic and some are authentic replicas. See more..
  6. 4.5 Resaca Battlefield Historic State site (8 reviews)
    - "Killed at Resaca" recalls a grim story

Resaca Battlefield Historic State site image
Many Civil War sites have been covered by commercial development. But Civil War buffs, like me and my wife, still can follow battlefield trails in Mississippi, Virginia and Georgia. For example, the Battle of Resaca was part of the Atlanta campaign waged by Union General William Tecumseh Sherman. Fought on May 13-15, 1864, it ended inconclusively with General Joseph E. Johnson's Confederate Army retreating amid 6,100 combined casualties. Author Ambrose Bierce's short story "Killed at Resaca" focuses on a group of soldiers who fight and die bravely at Resaca, and the needless bloodshed of war in general. The battlefield remains relatively intact with earthworks and fortifications along Camp Creek and the Oostanaula River. From Chattanooga, it is the mission of every Civil War historian to follow Sherman's route south to Atlanta, through Dalton and Resaca and Adairsville and Pickett's Mill and New Hope Church and Kennesaw Mountain and Peachtree Creek, then beyond Atlanta to Jonesboro.0 See more..

We enjoyed our visit to this small but historically important battlefield. It’s 10 miles east of Macon and worth the drive. There is free parking at the small flat battlefield with a small monument - we took a nice walk around the field It’s a short busy but if you appreciate learning about the Civil War it’s a must visit The Battle of Griswoldville happened on November 22, 1864 and was the only infantry battle opposing General William T. Sherman's March to the Sea from Atlanta to Savannah. Just east of the industrial town of Griswoldville, where there was a Confederate pistol factory and other mills - this was an important victory for Sherman and it all but ensured the fall of Savannah Go enjoy See more..
