  2. 4.5 Fort Pulaski National Monument (2.697 reviews)
    - Great fort!

    Fort Pulaski National Monument image
Fort Pulaski National Monument has one of the best preserved nineteenth century masonry fortifications in the United States. It was also the site of a major artillery duel during the Civil War that saw the first major use of rifled artillery in battle. You can tour the fortress, see living historians bringing the past to life, or watch an artillery demonstration that really immerses visitors with the sights and sounds of conflict. The monument however, is more than just a fort. We have over 5000 acres of pristine saltwater marsh, one of the largest concentrations of marsh along the coast of Georgia. Combine that with miles of trails and you have a great way to get away from our cultural history and surround yourself with the natural beauty of Cockspur Island, the heart of the monument. 3. 4.5 Columbus Riverwalk (1.086 reviews)
    - Nice trail

    Columbus Riverwalk image
From Phenix City rode bikes across the pedestrian bridge to the trail, can go left and travel all the way to Ft Benning, can turn right and follow the river to the end of the path about 2.5-3 miles nice ride. On both side of the trail you are riding along the river. When you start heading over to Ft Benning you are away from the river. There is a Zip line that crosses the river if you wanted to try that. The river walk gets crowded on the weekends not bad during the week. Also when you cross the pedestrian bridge you can also catch the Dragonfly trail ( Fall Line Trace Trail) , This trail has 17 street crossing in the first 3 miles then one about every 1/2 mile after that. 4. 4.0 Riverwalk (837 reviews)
    - Great 1.5 mile walk during the day along the beautiful Savannah River!
    Historic Walking Areas
    Riverwalk image
Within walking distance from any of the downtown hotels or b and bs. The walk is about 1.5 miles long and is awesome since it is right alongside the Savannah riverwalk. At one end there were a few homeless folks but they kept to themselves. I do not recommend walking this riverwalk at night as there are some homeless hanging around and the walk is out of sight from the street. Great daytime activity though as plenty of people around. We stayed in Hiram and biked south to Smyrna the first day - about 40 miles round trip. The next day we rode north around 15 miles. The trail is well marked with signage including mileage, food and places of interest. In addition, there are security cameras on parts of the trail. Finally, many trailheads include rest areas. If you enjoy biking or running this is a great trail. We would definitely recommend. See more..
  7. 4.5 Jimmy Carter National Historic Site (306 reviews)
    - Carter Museum at Plains High School

Jimmy Carter National Historic Site image
Few U.S. Presidents have had such close ties with where they were born and raised. The rural southern culture of Plains, Georgia, that revolves around farming, church, and school had a large influence in molding the character and in shaping the political policies of the 39th President of the United States. The site includes President Carter's residence, boyhood farm, school, and the railroad depot, which served as his campaign headquarters during the 1976 election. The Plains High School serves as the park's museum and visitor center. The Jimmy Carter National Preservation District includes part of the town of Plains and its environs. The area surrounding the residence is under the protection of the Secret Service and the home is not open to the public. The Carters returned to Plains in January 1981. The former President and First Lady pursue many of the goals of the administration through The Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, which has programs to alleviate human suffering and to promote human rights and world peace. When they are in Plains, Carter teaches Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist Church to which the public is invited. The Carters' ties to Plains have endured the stresses of public life, remaining as strong as they were decades ago. See more..

My wife and I visited this four acre memorial today. What a great experience. The memorial is dedicated to the the men and women who have served and to those who are currently serving in the United States Armed Services. There is a grand entrance plaza leading to a paved trail which circles a beautiful fountain that serves as the centerpiece of the park. Along the way there are black granite monuments that pay respect to each conflict, beginning with WWI as well as highlighting Women In Service. You will also see sponsored granite benches and a wooden gazebo. This is a beautiful peaceful place to go and reflect and pay homage. The entire memorial was constructed using donations. See more..

Recently my wife and I were traveling through the area and needed a break. We stopped at this small park located in the center of downtown Hiawassee. Got to stretch our legs walking around looking at the beautiful flowers and the Blue Star memorial. This city park is home to a summer concert series as well as other community events. Ate a snack at one of the picnic tables and then got back on the road. Really enjoyed our time at the park. See more..

    Stonewall Creek Falls image
We took our dog for a hike to Stonewall Falls. It's a short easy hike down a gated road to the waterfall. It's not big, but very scenic and easy to reach and the area around the falls is nice to sit and enjoy nature. In the warmer months, you could splash around in the water. There are two mountain bike trails (Stonewall Falls and White Twister) to extend the hike or bike the trails. We also found a few small waterfalls on Stonewall Creek above and below the main waterfall, though you'll have to scramble and bushwhack to see them. Beautiful area and I would visit again if nearby. Kennesaw Depot Park image
This is a great community park for families, history buffs, and train fans to explore. We enjoy walking through the park a couple of times a year, to see the wonderful displays and get fresh air. Located directly across the street from the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History, the Kennesaw Depot Park includes the restored railroad depot, a fenced playground, a beautiful walkway around a small amphitheater lined with paintings portraying the events of the great locomotive chase, and a pedestrian tunnel under the very active railroad tracks. Nearby (across the tracks from the museum), there is also a beautiful tree covered park with benches to sit and just watch the world go by, and monuments to fallen soldiers, a 911 monument, and historic markers. If you are visiting the museum, you definitely want to visit the paintings of the Great Locomotive Chase at the amphitheater. If you have youngsters, the playground is great for running off energy.
