The Atlanta History Center was founded on the big ideas and relentless fascination of 14 Atlantans who were emphatic about our city’s historical relevance in society. In a sense, our organization was created by Atlanta’s biggest fans, and we love that detail. In 1926, these founding members introduced the Atlanta Historical Society into the world with one mission: to help preserve Atlanta’s history. In 1990, after decades of collecting, researching, publishing and celebrating the early stories of our great Southern community, the Atlanta Historical Society and all of its holdings officially became the Atlanta History Center. - A unique place, very serene and lovely

    The Rock Garden image
This is a fascinating place. The detail of the building replicas is amazing. I have visited 2x, taking a group of 8 seniors the 2nd time. The walking paths are narrow in some places, but we had one person using a rolling walker and were able to get a view of all formations from some location, even though she could not take the walker on some of the paths. It is a relaxing place, very spiritual. If you have difficulty walking, take your cane with you, take your time, and you will still enjoy this. Admission is free but donations are requested to help with the maintenance. See more..

    Smith Gilbert Gardens image
With a variety of plantings, the Hiram Butler Home (ca. 1880) and 31 sculptures, Smith-Gilbert Gardens has something for everyone. At the center of Smith-Gilbert Gardens is the historic Hiram Butler House, dating back over 150 years. The house was once owned by Mr. Butler, a Confederate railroad man, who worked the lines most of his life and was present during the "Great Locomotive Chase." In 1970, Mr. Richard Smith and Dr. Robert Gilbert bought the Hiram Butler House and surrounding acreage in Kennesaw, Georgia. Over the following 35 years, they realized their dream of developing the house and grounds, with an emphasis on unique plantings and thoughtfully positioned sculpture. Now open to the public, Smith-Gilbert Gardens is 16 acres of serene setting with over 3,000 species of plants, several rare in American gardens. United by woodland paths, the Gardens consist of separate groupings with individual elements of fascination. These include the Bonsai Exhibit, Palladino Camellia Garden, tea house and waterfall area, Rose Garden, and Conifer Display. Our Garden is a proud member of various horticultural groups including the American Conifer, American Daffodil, American Hosta and the Southeastern Camellia societies. We are also a designated wildlife habitat by the Atlanta Audubon Society. Both our Rose Garden and the Conifer Collection have received special recognition as places to visit by their respective societies. See more..

    - FINALLY Got To See This!

    Radium Springs gardens image
We came once before, but were unable to enter because of storm damage. It's such a shame that so much of the original hotel had to be demolished, but the remaining structure apparently makes a great wedding venue (one was in progress when we arrived). The spring area, although now closed to boating, diving, and swimming, is still splendid to view. This must have been quite to place to visit "in the day". I wouldn't at all be surprised to learn that there was even a railroad spur that came here. See more..

Nice small gardens.. Not much blooming at the moment, but the trees are budding. It was quiet when I got here, until the families with LOUD children arrived. I finally left my little quiet spot as the noise increased. People with kids, please control your kids, there are walking paths for a reason. I saw kids run thru the flower beds, and trees and gardens, off of the trails. Maybe they need to be on a leash too. See more..

    Dunaway Gardens image
Talk about a place of wonderment...the story of how the gardens came to be, were forgotten and neglected for decades, only to be revived by a lady who happened by one day, is quite a piece of Newnan history. A truly beautiful garden, on par with many gardens I have visited while living 6 months out of the year in the United Kingdom. A great wedding venue...I actually planned a wedding here for a dear friend...staff and management are easy to work with and the wedding was lovely, as the ceremony took place in the terraced theatre. Highly recommended! See more..
