Excellent tour

Built as a beautiful Regency style mansion in 1819, the Owens-Thomas House, along with its adjacent gardens, carriage house, and slave quarters, allows visitors to explore the complicated relationships between the most and least powerful people in the city of Savannah in the early 19th century. Only a seven-minute walk from Telfair Museums’ other two sites, this historic home offers a completely different experience. Telfair Museums’ Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters has paused all docent led tours indefinitely due to COVID-19. Guests may independently navigate the historic home with an audio tour available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or our website.

This is the house to tour!
HIGHLY recommend this tour- we received a full history of Savannah as well as the house occupants. Soul crushing to view the enslaved quarters... Admission also provides admission to the art museum.

Interesting Tour of the Enslaved Quarters
Due to Covid, tour groups are limited to a maximum of 8. We lined up outside the home around 9:45 to obtain a tour time when the home opened at 10 am (it was very hot and humid waiting on the sidewalk). They are in the process of implementing on-line tour reservations. We obtained our tour time of 10:30 and waited in the courtyard which has benches. This is a self guided tour, you will need to access the tour narrative on your cell phone. The first part of the tour starts in a room that has photographs and information about the house which you walk around and listen to sections 1 through 4 of the audio narrative. Next you cross the beautiful garden to enter the home itself. We continued to walk through the beautifully restored family rooms on the first and second floors. One of the highlights of this home was it's modern conveniences for the time including running water and flush toilets, and even a large shower area in the basement. By far the most interesting part of this tour is the basement which was the "working area" for the enslaved such as the kitchen and laundry room. There is also a large cistern and ice storage area to view as well as the remnants of the large shower area used by the family, but not the enslaved. Very interesting home and highly recommend a visit. We purchased the ticket to the 3 Telfair museums which includes the Jepson museum, Telfair Academy and the Owens-Thomas home. There is a discount for Military, Veterans and Seniors.
