Just Amazing

Bonaventure Cemetery was developed on the historically-significant site of Bonaventure Plantation. The peaceful setting rests on a scenic bluff of the Wilmington River, east of Savannah. The site was purchased for a private cemetery in 1846 and became a public cemetery in 1907. Citizens and others can still purchase interment rights in Bonaventure. This charming site has been a world famous tourist destination for more than 150 years due to the old tree-lined roadways, the many notable persons interred, the unique cemetery sculpture and architecture, and the folklore associated with the site and the people. The entrance to the cemetery is located at 330 Bonaventure Road and is the largest of the municipal cemeteries containing nearly 100 acres. The cemetery is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. . The main office of the Department of Cemeteries is located in the Bonaventure Administrative Building at the entrance.

    Take a tour with Dawn!
Dawn is semi retired and works only part time as a guide but if you get her, you’re getting the best. Dawn’s taught us much about funeral arts and cemetery symbolism. Her knowledge of Savannah history is extensive but she delivers it in a very relatable way. Her story telling is delightful and included a wonderful tribute to Johnny Mercer at the Mercer site. She also had such a touching retelling of the story of little Gracie, one of the most notable residents of Bonaventure. If you enter the cemetery with reverence and an open mind, you will have a great experience. If you have Dawn as your guide, it will be even better. We had about 20 in our group, with folks from the Dakotas, Wyoming, Colorado, and neighboring South Carolina. Thank you for sharing your passion and knowledge with us, Dawn!

Large cemetery, wear comfortable shoes, do a little research ahead on what you want to see here
We stopped by Bonaventure around 9:30 on a Sunday as we wanted to visit before we left Savannah. The gates were open but the office had not yet opened when we got there- but it was open when we left about an hour later. Parking was easy, right inside the Jewish side of the cemetery, but you could drive through the main roads as well. The tours weren’t available on the day we visited, so we had a loose plan of walking around with a map. We did purchase the Bonaventure app on our phones for $4.95. If you plan to go, I recommend that you try to come on a day when the tours are available or book one of the Shannon Scott tours beforehand to learn more about the monuments and history. The app was ok, but we needed more of a focused plan of seeing and finding everything. We didn’t realize the Bird Girl statue that is so popular was not still in the cemetery, but had actually been moved to a museum. Overall, it was a nice morning walk, fresh air and exercise for us, but we left without seeing some of the main sites because we were tired of walking around.
