    National Great Rivers Museum image
Our family was driving through Alton trying to get a look at the recent flooding at the river and we decided to pull into the Melvin Price Lock & Dam for a closer look. We pulled in to find that there was a museum as well as free guided tours of the Lock & Dam. The museum was neat with interactive and interesting displays about the local area, how locks/dams work, and some other similar topics. The hilight for us was getting to take the guided tour. We actually took an elevator to the top of the dam and were able to walk across and look down at the different lock chambers and dam gates. The tour guide was excellent and shared interesting information about construction and functionality of Melvin Price and the Mississippi River dam and lock system. We got to observe some of the locking operations for a barge as well since the lock and dam continues to operate during the tour. Everything was free and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. See more..

This was an interesting museum. I was looking for cultural things to do while visiting Lombard for the weekend. The large mill had several historical facts. There was a live demonstration of the stone wheel grinding corn into corn meal. There are three stories, with the top two being a museum and the basement floor part of the Underground Railroad station shop. Taking back into little known American History were relics of the slave trade. The museum entrance fee was $6 for adults. Galesburg Railroad Museum image
Museum is small and open limited hours but what makes it worthwhile are the people who work there who provide the tours of the railroad cars and tell the stories and history of railroad travel and the men and women who worked on the trains. We had an excellent guide who took us on the train cars and explained not only the mechanics of the train and equipment but personal stories and his own family history of what it was like to work on them. Inside a woman was telling stories about Abraham Lincoln and other people related to artifacts too. There were many people working because of the annual Railroad Days event we were attending. I would recommend this as a stop to make for train fans during this event. See more..

    All Wars Museum image
While spending a father/son weekend in Quincy, IL, took my son to the All Wars Museum at the Illinois Veterans Home. Definitely glad we made sure this was a part of our trip! Greeted as soon as we entered by Dale Hilgenbrink, a Vietnam Veteran, who made our visit even more memorable! The museum may look small, but its packed full of memorabilia from every war America has been involved. The collection housed in this small museum rivals most larger museums. The collection of dioramas are amazing. In particular one of WWI Beaches of Normandy has a 45 sec sound clip from the actual battle. As an USAF Veteran, it was our time talking with Dale and his genuine interest in my son who heads off to ROTC at University of Central Missouri this fall. Highly recommend making a trip to the All Wars Museum a mandatory stop! See more..

For train lovers like me, riding on an old trolly is a trip down memory lane. The conductor, Jim gives you a history of the car while you enjoy the 30 minute ride to Blackhawk park & back. Course you can elect to get off and check out the park & pick it back up later. Just make sure you check with the conductor the time they return. Careful, last pickup is 4:30PM. The museum has a couple cars you can checkout like an old 1800's commuter & a IC caboose. Unfortunately, two dumb kids damaged a number of their cars causing over $150,000 damage. That's where you can help by showing up & supporting them. We will definitely come back! See more..

The cars listed on the website may not be there. I wanted to see the Corvairs but they are no longer stored there. The museum is an old grocery store. To me it appears the owner has some nice cars and that he leases heated space to others (I didn't ask). And then charges to let folks view the cars in storage. It's an okay stop. They don't have a restroom and you must go to restaurant two doors down. Among the collection are some 50s and 60s vets, as well as newer ones, Cameros from 1968 on, and several impalas. There's plenty of memorabilia along the walls and a couple of 30s chevys. Again I'm not a chevy aficionado so I might be a little harsh. See more..

The Aurora Regional Fire Museum is located in Aurora's old Central Fire Station. The museum is open to the public regular hours, and features a variety of interactive exhibits designed to educate and entertain children, families, and firefighters. The museum's primary exhibit, "Getting There, Getting Water, Getting Rescued" traces the evolution of the tools and technology used by firefighters. Visitors can pass a leather fire bucket from the early 1800s. See the horse stalls and the "real" fire horses. Discover what was found under the floor boards of the old central fire station. Marvel at the strange looking Vajen-Bader smoke mask. See and hear how modern fire apparatus clears the streets with sirens, air horns, and devices that change traffic lights green. Watch vintage film clips of firefighters and fire engines on one of five video touch-screens. All this in addition to five pieces of fire apparatus on display in a fully restored 1894 fire station. Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Museum image
Our collection includes relics of the Civil War but highlights the membership and work done by the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) and their auxiliary, the Woman's Relief Corps (W.R.C.). Visitors to the museum receive a brief description of what the museum is and what you will see. You have the option to view the displays and read the interpretive panels on your own or receive a guided tour complete with additional descriptions and more in-depth commentary. Depending on the date of your visit, special exhibits may be on display. There is no entry fee but the Museum receives no City, State or Federal funding and relies entirely on the membership of the WRC and the donations of visitors. See more..
