    Ernest Hemingway Birthplace Museum image
Ernest Hemingway's Birthplace Museum is nestled just west of downtown Chicago in Oak Park, Illinois. This is the ideal place to begin exploring the roots of the author's life and work. It is here that Ernest Hemingway was born in a second floor bedroom on July 21, 1899. This Queen Anne home was built in 1890 by his maternal grandparents and was the first home in Oak Park to have electricity. The famed Pulitzer Prize winning author spent the first six years of his life at what is now 339 N. Oak Park Ave. The restoration, which began in 1992, authentically returned the house to its 1890s’ Victorian heritage; ensuring that your experience of the furnishings and stories told reflect the young man who lived there. Gayety's Chocolates & Ice Cream Co. image
My wife is from the "East Side" of Chicago, and Gayety's was a staple of their family for special occasions...including the special days of, "let's stop by Gayety's today!" Gayety's was first opened in February of 1920...so, this is their 101st Anniversary! They closed for a short period last year, but it was purchased by some of their previous employees. They have since reopened in Lansing, Illinois fairly close to their original location in South Chicago. My wife's family, my wife, and I are very happy. New life for Gayety means new ideas for their new and improved menu! The "All New Gayety" is great! I personally think the new Gayety has a very festive feel and that their products have actually been improved. I look forward to my hollow chocolate bunny coming again this Easter. The family tradition lives on! See more..

  20. 3.0 Frank Fritz Finds (55 reviews)
    - I would not put my name on this place
Spent < 1 hour Speciality & Gift Shops
    Frank Fritz Finds image
We looked for this place on main street and couldn't find it. Finally we noticed that we had to enter through a bar. It turns out that all of the windows were covered by pull down doors. The bartender went out after we left and opened them, and this was at 11:30am. Inside the bar it was dark and even darker inside the shop. It was very musty smelling and so dark it was hard to really see anything very good. I would not recommend this place at all. See more..
  21. 4.5 Funk's Grove Maple Sirup (55 reviews)
    - Yes, sir, it's spelled sirup
Saturday: 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent 1-2 hours Speciality & Gift Shops
    Funk's Grove Maple Sirup image
Daughter and I stopped here as we were passing through the Funks Grove area during our weekend Route 66 trip. We thought that this location was more of a tourist stop, but it's mostly a small shop were you can buy maple sirup (and some other things). Cashier working the shop at the time was very welcoming and polite. We were able to try a small sample of their maple sirup (which was tasty and sweet) before buying a bottle of our own. Prices are reasonable for pure, locally made maple sirup. Worth stopping to visit and get some maple sirup of your own, but it's not as much of an attraction as many of the other nearby Route 66 places tend to be. See more..
  22. 4.5 Woodman's (49 reviews)
    - Great Grocery Store with Low Prices
    Speciality & Gift Shops
    Woodman's image
We are near the headquarters for Aldi's U.S. Headquarters, so we have lots of Aldi's around. But Woodman's prices are just a low as Aldi and this is a huge store--they have everything. The only thing you have to watch is since they are so huge, they do have some expired items that are waiting to be cycled. So for the low prices, you do have to pay attention to what you select--but don't take this as all their stuff is old, I'm just saying on rare occasions, you do have to watch what you selected. Assi Plaza image
This combo grocery store, food court, and shopping arcade provides a travel experience without your having to endure an airplane trip in these COVID-conscious times. The parking lot is huge. It wasn't clear to me which carts and baskets had been sanitized, but since I had a very short shopping list for this trip, I decided to attempt to manage without either. Later I asked a gloved employee for a carton that he had just emptied and used that to carry my purchases -- a hack that all Aldi shoppers will recognize. As always, I found a huge selection and fair prices. See my previous reviews (October 13, 2014; August 17, 2017; and December 25, 2019) for more details. See more..

    Country Cheese and More image
OK, so everyone comments on the great cheeses, the baked goods, the jams/jellies, even the helpful friendly staff, BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! They have a excellent deli! This is a great stop for a lite lunch, unless you get dessert. The tasty subs, but these are made with the fresh cheeses, hand cut veggies, local meats and a unique bread, kind of like a sub roll but much flatter and wide. Each 6" but like 4" wide was less than $5. They have a cooler with drinks and some snack chips. Only have a few tables but there is room and to go is an option. I think this is one of the real hidden gems in Arthur. Give this place a try for sure and don't forget to take some cheese, baked goods and jams with you! See more..
